  1. ARDBERG scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A real fat dram, that you would likely place on Islay during a blind tasting, or less likely towards Ardmore.

Tastingnotes without water - 5 cl sample.
    • Nose
      91 91
Sweet chocolate Smoke - tends slightly more towards wood smoke than peat smoke, though in a pleasant way, Iodine, bandages, milk chocolate, port, herbs. Could smell this for hours.
    • Taste
      90 90
Medicinal, mercurochrome, iodine, railroad ties, dry sweetness, ripe yellow fruits (plums).
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium finish, medicinal, iodine numbs the lips and mouth somewhat, pleasantly garnished with chocolate.

[November, 2020] Usually I do not drink these alien whiskies from all different countries all over the world that often just surf the recent whisky hype wave. Not, that the producers are not willing or incapable of delivering high quality products and often they do - but the (usually very small) equipment they use creates a completely different style of spirit which is closer to "Schnapps" (Obstbrand in german) than to malt whisky. Yes, size matters (in many aspects) and certainly when it comes to spirit distillation. But this dram was recommended to me by a good friend...

...and it is one of the best alien whiskies I had so far. This truly smells and tastes like a (Scotch) single malt whisky and I can imagine a fine profile after some more years of maturation. Still it is somewhat immature in the nose and the taste is rather simple (which is quite normal at the age of seven) but it is very enjoyable to quaff. Hopefully the owners mature some of this stuff for at least 12 years, I look forward to buy a bottle in 2025.
    • Nose
      85 85
The colour is deep gold and the nose offers not a "Schnapps" profile which is good but still it smells somewhat immature, no wonder at just seven years of age. Nonetheless, the smoky-winey-oaky profile is quite nice and given some more years of maturation this might become an excellent alien whisky, most probably.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is much more mature with a delicious combo of medicinal-peaty flavours contained by the sweet port wine and barley sugars, some shy fruits and firm herbal wooden notes which do not dominate (yet). No flaw or imbalance, and I can imagine a great taste after some more years of maturation (I expect this dram to be perfect at around 12 years of maturation, most probably). Still it is rather simple, but very quaffable!
    • Finish
      87 87
The initial mouthfeel is satisfying with a creamy warming texture covering all of the mouth instantly. A great oiliness, indeed and obviously they kept the heart of the run very narrow (well done!). The finish is of medium length and adds more bitter impressions of cold ashes and herbs which I like. It turns a little drying towards the end but this is no big deal. Water releases more bitter-peaty aromas in the nose which dominate the profile too much now and the taste turns bitter too with an increasingly unpleasant astringent mouthfeel. Clearly I prefer the neat dram.

fine sweetness, the smoke is very nicely integrated, dark fruits, plums, spicy, tobacco

Meaty, smoke, plum, nice sweetness, spicy, little wood spice, leather

    Medium length, smoke, sweet, spicy

  6. Julia E S scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A really successful whisky from Old Raven and for me and my friend altogether a lot more exciting than the previous special release "The Gentle", because it has a lot more rough edges.

Nice sweet port wine aromas meet a nice combination of herbs that remind me of a very good absinthe. The whole thing is hovered around by fine medicinal / mineral smoke flavors and then grilled mushrooms and meaty flavors are added.

    Everything very independent and exciting!
