    Out of this World

For his second release Belgian bottler The Whisky Jury opted for a Caol Ila from 1983. Say again? 1983? That makes this a 35 years old Caol Ila. Look at that beautiful gold foiled label. And the bottle comes in a classy wooden box. But of course it’s the contents that interests me. This is, by the way, my 120th Caol Ila. I’m gonna take my time with this one.

The nose is out of this world! Truly, this makes me as happy as when I got my first Star Wars action figure as a seven year old kid. In my mind’s eye I am catapulted right back to the small harbour of Port Askaig with its dark thunderclouds, diesel engines, ships’ ropes and rusting chains against the quay. Sea weeds and oyster sap are mixed with soft notes of citrus fruit and silver polish. Give it ten minutes – it really merits it – and be surprised by some tropical notes in the background: pineapple, mango, mandora. Absolutely delightful!

The body is fine, the strength near perfect. Powerful, spicy, bittersweet and smoky. Salted butter, citrus, pistachio nuts, caramelized wood and so forth. Midpalate the tropical fruit returns, although the maritime character of Caol Ila dominates. This malt is perfectly balanced!

The finish is wonderfully long, nicely warm with a prickling peppery note. Delicious…

Joeri: kudos! This Caol Ila just entered my top 30 of best malts ever tasted. The bottle costs 329 EUR, which is a bargain for this stuff. But believe it or not, it’s already sold out. Darn! I would very much like a bottle of this. Anyone?

1983, from the golden years of the distillery, expectations are high. That it is the second release of a new bottler gives rise to a little doubt ...

    ... that are completely unfounded.
Caol Ila in full swing, damp wood on the beach. Algae, mussels, wet dew.
    Oysters with limes and lemons.
After some time in the glass, the barrel breaks through - mango, pineapple, passion fruit, accompanied by cinnamon and nutmeg.
Olive oil and walnut oil complete the smooth and complex nose.

The whisky glides through the mouth like oil and flatters the tongue.
The basic character of Caol Ila is unmistakable and powerful. A tropical fruit smoothie made with sea water and a hint of ash. The oak brings spice, but this is subtle and weaves finely into the barrel and spirit aromas. And there are also the citrus and nut oils that are so typical of these early 80s vintage from refill barrels.

Mango, sea breeze, a little ash. Very long, slightly astringent at the end, but only a little

A top filling, with great fruitiness and at the same time a strong distillery character. But the bar for upcoming bottlings by the jury is really set very high.
329 € issue price in 2020 are almost a bargain for this quality

Nosing and sipping of this lovely dram is, for certain, the equivalent of eating rice pudding in heaven with a golden spoon!

    The nose is sublime.
On the other hand, in the mouth, it is the discomfiture ... It is bordering on bad.
Fortunately, by keeping it in the mouth, the disturbing aromas fade away.
    • Nose
      92 92
Very nice nose while melted, rolled up.
Orange, grapefruit, sage, star anise, black pepper.
Light warehouse, motor oil, old book.
And of course peat, rather light, and a cold smoke.
    • Taste
      86 86
In the mouth it is very powerful.
A little glue / elastic unfortunately.
Pencil lead, liquorice, molasses, pepper, cold ash and barbecue.
      Very fatty peat. Black olive.
      Citrus. Lime, grapefruit, orange zest.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long finish on oily peat, candied citrus fruits, pepper, liquorice, cold ash.

    Oh, is that good ..
    • Nose
      93 93
Hardly any smoke at first, cinnamon, shell limestone, behind it light fruits, grapes, mango, and after a few minutes a little warm smoke
    • Taste
      92 92
Extremely creamy, beautiful interplay between the fruity, the salty-maritime aromas and the cold smoke
    • Finish
      92 92
Long, mineral, smoky and .. is the woodruff?

Beautiful Caol Ila, which only lacks more tropical fruits to get my top marks.
    • Nose
      92 92
First a slightly reserved nose. Creamy and sweet with a slight smoke note. The classic aromas such as salt and lemon are directly present. Pear, dried apple rings, smoked fish, green peppers are added.
After swinging the Blender's glass there is a hint of tropical fruits.
After a while petrol, honeydew melon, oyster water, kiwi, woodruff and phenols.
    • Taste
      90 90
Immediately fills the entire mouth, lies creamy on the tongue. The typical dryness of an ashy Caol Ila. The fruit component is very restrained. It becomes very mineral, dry ... reminiscent of a Riesling.
Despite the somewhat reduced aroma spectrum in the mouth, it is extremely harmonious and round. Oily and waxy.
    • Finish
      91 91
Very long and pleasant without any bitterness. Dried harbor walls, lime, salt and ash remain the longest.

Elegant, sophisticated and complex. Soft peat, along with menthol, citrus, salt, and brine. Evolves all the time in the glass, and carries the presence of 35 years of ageing with balance and poise. I'd go as far as to say there's a nod to 35 year old Brora OB's, but perhaps without that extra layer of other-worldly depth. Nonetheless, beautiful whisky that is both entertaining and subtle, and deserves an entire evening of your attention.
