This is the third Irish botteling from Achives, this time exclusively for Taiwan. You can't go wrong with these early 1990's undisclosed Irish. This one is no exception. For me one of the best Archives of the year. Most probably from Bushmills, who used rum casks a lot in that period.
    • Nose
A bit shy at first nosing with quite some leafy and floral notes. Also chalk and wet stones. It takes a while before the expected fruitiness arrives. Not a tropical sensation, but more on the citric side of the spectrum; gooseberries, lemon and lime. I also detect green bananas. Fresh mint and cut grass. It's all very delicate and complex
    • Taste
Now we're clearly in fruity 'tropical' Irish territories again. Blood oranges, mango, papaya and tangerines. Delightful bitter-sweetness of pink grapefruits. Bergamot and hints of acacia honey. Very creamy with a slightly woody edge at the background.
    • Finish
Long and lingering. Zesty. Some rummy notes. A little cinnamon. Well balanced excellent Irish whisky. Glad I was able to purchase a bottle.

The Baker’s Dozen 13 independent unspecified single Irish malts 12-30 year old.

My experience of irish single malts is not huge so I thought I would try these 13 IB.
In the past I have found that in the main Irish single malts are not as complex or heavy as Scotch whisky apart from some older Lowland offerings.
Many of the ones tried here had a cereal note, stewed white fruits on the palate and the nose was a little distant but the palate was pretty good.
I did not do full tasting notes as I had 13 to taste but also after the first half dozen they where melding into one.
There are obviously less differences in this flight rather than a Scotch H2H but that is understandable as there are far fewer distilleries in Ireland and my guess here that half of those here were bushmill’s.
What was interesting is that sometimes with Scotch whisky the palate does not deliver what the nose promised, with quite a few of these it was the other way round with the palate being the weakest part.
I still prefer Scotch whisky to Irish because there is more going on but there are exceptions, as there always will be and in the past Ihave had some cracking Irish single malts and blends.

This is the last of 13 Irish tasted tonight so excuse the short tasting note.
The nose is full of stewed white fruits plus pineapple and mango bit i would not say it is particularly sweet.
The palate is pretty much the same, stewed fruit, some not ripe, just ever so slightly unripe, that sort of thing.
There is some spice showing up after a few minutes, but also a faint metallic aftertaste in the finish which drops it a few marks.

Tropical, green, austere and Irish really match - very good!
    • Nose
      92 92
Tropical fruits mixed with grapefruit and herbs, good level of austerity, green fruits, green banana, little leafy, honeydew, lime, green apple - I'm running out of green fruits - anyhow, it couldn't be anymore typical Irish - very good!
    • Taste
      92 92
Oily, fruity, sirupy, good sweetness, more tropical fruits, more on the green papaya side, pineapple, mango, little vanilla, little leafy and herbal, austere, lemon peel and grapefruit - still good
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium long, warm, fruity, still good sweetness, little more lemon peel and grapefruit
