Admittedly, considering its age, its complexity doesn't really blow my mind. But complexity isn't the only thing that makes a good malt. The 18-year-old from Talisker is very tasty and its composition (casual selection together with the smoke) is absolutely consistent. It is also one of the more affordable adult malts from Scotland.

    • Nose
A pleasant aroma of sherry and peat smoke. The smoke is cold, like from a nearly burnt out campfire, and a bit maritime. Relatively dry with citrus (lemons and oranges) and dried fruits. The citrus notes push the dried fruits back a bit over time. After the first taste, the dry sherry weakens, becoming noticeably sweeter with brown sugar, red apples and tangerines. The smoke is also a bit more subtle now, but leaves a slightly cooling, maritime feeling in the nose. A hint of oak spice can be sensed in the background.
    • Taste
Very soft and oily. Pleasantly gentle peat smoke follows, which now also has slightly medicinal overtones. The sharpness typical of Talisker is also there, but much weaker than in younger bottlings. The mouthfeel is sweet with oranges (or orange peel), raisins and prunes. Then the oak comes through, brings bittersweet notes of dark chocolate and together with the dried fruits an association of plum cake.
    • Finish
First the citrus fruits and the pastries again, as well as a good portion of cinnamon. Mixed together, the whole thing reminds me of Christmas stollen. The smoke is very well integrated. A slight bitterness of the oak follows. In the end, the smoke remains along with the oranges. The finish is very long and just as oily and velvety as the mouthfeel.

This is a 2020 bottle half-emptied, the tasting profile has smoothened quite a lot. Overall still very balanced and enjoyable, but the peppery punch is reduced, so once open definitely don't put it on the shelf for years, it'd be a waste.
Can be a bit too rounded to adventurers but will definitely appeal to newcomers and those who love harmonic whisky.

The 18 Talisker is considered a jewel in the core range of the distillery and has long since surpassed the price of €100. It's a pity, of course, that the piece of jewelery is dyed and chill-filtered. That keeps the liquid clear, but clouds the anticipation of the whisky. Talisker is a truly beautifully situated distillery on the Isle of Skye. Unfortunately, the tours have always been mediocre.

    • Nose
On the nose it is initially rather elegant and does not present itself as a rough coastal whisky. This is more captain's dinner than crew galley. The second time you smell it, of course, the smoke is there, underlined with a sweet note and fruit. Blood orange is there and spices are added. This is a nice blend of smoke that isn't smoky, ripe fruit salad high in citrus, and a spice blend of pepper and cardamom. It's worth leaving the glass for a while, the whisky develops well and unfolds its aromas.
    • Taste
The taste of the smoke is also strong, reminiscent of the Islay smoke from Caol Ila with its ashy wood component. There are also fruits and spices, but the sweetness is only restrained and fits in well, plum with blood orange juice in which a glowing piece of charcoal is extinguished. The alcohol is strong and well integrated, a bit of sharpness is wanted with Talisker. For 18 years, however, some depth is missing at the end, the barrels are not that present.
    • Finish
A nice smoky aroma remains in the finish, which would have deserved a longer note of wood. At the back it lacks the power and intensity that an 18 year old whisky should have.

A beautiful, tasty whisky that brings coastal flair - not that of stormy days, but of a sunny day on Skye, when the air of the Atlantic mingles with herbaceous-mineral scents of the country. Nevertheless, I would like it to be a little more complex and profound. It's understated and lacks that final kick that could make it a truly great whisky.

More smoky than briny on palate apart from standard 10.

Maritime seaweed, slightly burned but pleasant bacon, very vegetal oiliness, fresh vanilla shortbread cookie and creaminess. Overall very elegant nose
    • Taste
      88 88
Creamy vanilla, chared oak wood ash and smoke, burned grilled meat with dark butterscotch crust, black pepper. Nice, but notes of burned wood are too prominent
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long, sweet and smoky, vanilla cream, cigarette ash, black pepper

Talisker 18 always delicious, here the old young has really good smoke
    • Nose
      88 88
Smoky, salty, typically talisker with more smoked bacon. Spicy, herbs and honey, vanilla
    • Taste
      89 89
The strength is always the taste. The smell aromas can be found again. However, with a little cold campfire (a little towards islay) with malt and a little bread. Salty, maritime and delicious. Wait ... Also candy sugar and cinnamon. Great

Here comes a bit of the pepper and catch from talisker which decreases and becomes homogeneous at 18 years of age. very nice

Pure Talisker profile: iodine, salt and the sweet peated notes. Robust and masculine.
Keeping almost untouched the old style of bottling of ten-fifteen years ago differently than the newest series of 10-year-old that seems to have lost that.

Damn! It is great on first contact. Very mellow and luscious. No sharpness at all. Luscious, great mildly peated sherry, highlighly aromatic.

Probably the only downside is the strength and the length.

Impressive! This must be one of the most perfectly balanced Taliskers I’ve tasted! A great play between fresh, maritime, spicy and fruity flavors. I don’t know why but somehow it never came to buying a bottle of this. I guess that is about to change after tasting this generous sample.
    • Nose
Impressive! Smooth, sweet and gentle peat, giving a fireplace kind of smokiness. Coastal in like seaweed, a smell I often get with Taliskers. There is freshness in like anise. Spiciness like in laurel, licorice and salmiac. Fruitiness in like green apples, raspberry and mango chutney. Nuttiness in like hazelnut chocolate. This nose offers a lot of complexity and balance and a wide range of flavors that are very harmonious together.
    • Taste
Quite an explosion of flavors. Giving sweet & sour experiences. Mild and sweet at first, with red fruits and a whiff of raisins. More sourness and spicyness mid palate offering peppers, paprika powder and clove. Sour fruits like late season tangerines and green apples. Full bodied and complex. This is something to get rather excited about!
    • Finish
Long and intens! A burst of flavor once again. It’s peat influence is the strongest here. It offers loads and loads of oak influences accompanied with again various red and ‘green’ fruits and dried spices. Nice Saltiness at the end. What a pleasure!

This might seem to be a bit of a ‘dull’ bottle to buy but the content of the bottle tells me a whole different story. This one goes straight to my wishlist.

    Talisker 18y (bottled 2020) 45.8%
    Color: yellow gold
Nose: restrained, pastries, vanilla, light sea breeze, orange peel, later also citrus notes
    Body: medium / oily
Mouth: pastries, pepper, ginger, salt, later: oranges, nuts
Finish: long, mild with a salty, peppery finish
Conclusion: takes time. Develops in the glass. Quite restrained on the nose, mature in the mouth. But ... doesn't live up to expectations.

  27. Highlander65 scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Good, but I expected more. Maybe the previous whisky affected me or maybe it was a sample that had lost some strength
    • Nose
Deep and dark scent, peat is barely felt (I had just tasted a Caol Ila Moch which perhaps influenced the tasting), chocolate, bread crust.
    • Taste
On the palate it is more peaty than on the nose, decisive and elegant at the same time.
    • Finish
Very long, balanced, powerful, elegant finish

  28. thijs100 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Still on top if its game. The Talisker 18 is undeniably tasty and the result of a proper balancing act by the master blender.
    • Nose
Subtle and elegant. Notes of olive brine, soft campfire smoke and embers. Then there's room for smoked paprika powder, dried red fruits and salted caramel. Finally a whiff of aniseed. A whisky made for nosing. Supremely balanced.
    • Taste
Silky, salty and sweet with a proper pinch of pepper on the tip of the tongue. Soft ashes, charred oak and grilled meats, with some very subtle grapefruit and cherry syrup. Finally some cigar tobacco.
    • Finish
Lingering pepper, sour cherries, menthol. Medium in length.
