Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 2004 SMWS 3.315
3 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.67 points
- The label that states 56.9% is a TTB label, which can and does change. At time of application to the American market, it was also just 15 yo. The bottle, when released, is 56.5% ABV and 16yo.
- Newly opened bottle
A bit austere. Some burnt leaves, vanilla, eucalyptus, lime, sea water and peat, with moments of mustiness.
Quite good mouthfeel. There is some roasted black tea, with chestnut creaminess, salty seaweed and sour pickles, slightly bitter peat, grapefruits, and hints of sweeter fruits at the tail end. Complex, yet subtle, flavors.
Bitter grapefruit pith, medicinal, and yes, salty finish.
Slightly disappointed the hints of fruits in the palate did not evolve into something more.
I got a feeling with time, this will be 90 points though. The quality and complexity is there. And due to the peat and high strength, this will keep well in the bottle. For now, 89 points.
- SMWS Tasting Notes:
Initially this one was all dryness and mineralic austerity. Brittle, blade-like and chiselled like a pale blue Adonis. Then more gentle scents began to peep through. Roses, cardamom, bath salts, wild flowers, pine needles and cut grass. Elegance and subtlety abound. Water gave the impression of sea water sloshing into a swimming pool. Seaweed wrapped around plastic water wings. Then more sweetness with grape jam, lemon cough drops and aniseed medicines. The palate opened with a surprisingly oily texture. A rather intense and pronounced salinity and notes of quiche pastry, sun-dried tomato, cumin, verbena, smoked paprika and a kiss of wasabi. Dilution brings salt taffy and toasted marshmallows. The crispness of granny smith apples, tart fruit chutneys, grilled peppers and the notion of lightly peat smoked honey in the finish.
