Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1999 MBa

Caol Ila from the sherry barrel and from the 90s is rarely of such a quality that it can inspire me.
But here it is the case, absolutely round and balanced, nothing dominated or overlaid.
The alcohol content has dropped significantly in 20 years, which ensures an optimal drinking strength.

The price obviously does not affect my rating, but I would like to mention it in the comment, I find it too expensive (200 €).

Nice muffled smoke, extinguished open fire. Sherry of the nutty-spicy variety, tobacco. A slight saltiness and minerality (limestone). A few drops of water bring out the tobacco notes much more vigorously. Baked cocoa.
A little dark fruit comes through (dates and plums), but it is rather subtle. Milk chocolate brings a little sweetness.
And from time to time a slight diesel note peels off.

A very pleasant barrel strength, water is actually not necessary.
A nice combination of ash and spicy sherry notes, very cigar-like. Some lime comes through in the mouth, but very subtle. The first violin plays the barrel
The mouthfeel is very creamy and flatters the tongue.

Unfortunately, it tilts a bit here, at first a little dry fruit sweetness, it quickly becomes very astringent, pure cocoa and espresso notes. tobacco

The nose is very beautiful, the whisky is dangerously tasty in spite of the very spicy profile. The finish was rather weak and borderline bitter for my taste

Peat, seaweed and lemons. Classic Caol Ila. Relatively sweet. Where did the sherry barrel go? Not that I would miss it, but it's still on the bottle. I think it's delicious anyways. Full review (in german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/04/08/maltbarn-outturn-tasting/
