Whisky Reviews for Monkey Shoulder Batch 27 - Smooth And Rich

Monkey Shoulder is a rather simple but honest and decent quality Blended Malt from the Speyside of Scotland. Young Balvenie features quite prominently on the nose. Sweet fruits, candy apples and a touch of ice wine combine with creamy honey, fine spices and hints of coffee. Delicate maltiness and restrained oak influence complement the otherwise light and sweet character on the palate. The finish is swift, woody and sugary, merging into dark chocolate bitterness. With an excellent price-quality ratio, this dram is certainly better than most blends.

Overall quite a good blend for the price
    • Nose
Unripe bananas and pears, some mustiness as well. Quite malty, probably as it is very spirit driven. Ginger warmth.
    • Taste
Malt notes upfront with vanilla sweetness. The oak spice is noticeable here as well. Slightly too thin but overall a decent palate.
    • Finish
Medium-short finish. Some sweetness balanced out by bitterness of the oak perhaps.

N: Waxy pineapple cubes, unripe bananas, and clean honey malt. Doesn’t come across as a blend like so many do, although it is very consolidated.
T: Light arrival - peppery and oaky with resh mint, lamb & pork with sweet malt surging through. Waxy. Nice shape on development - easy
F: Waxy, fresh-ish, creamy, vanilla finish. Not very concise but well blended. Bitter lemon dominates the finish. Very tannic at the death.
C: Surprisingly good considering its reputation and marketing. Lets not get too carried away but there is complexity, age and a simple and shapely journey from sweet to sour.

    Scores a C-

I was expecting a mixers whisky and am convinced it is often used for making cocktails because of the sweet character, but this is much more than that.
    • Nose
The first thing I notice on the nose is a bourbonny butterscotch, augmented by pears, prunes and even strawberry. Honeysweet, to say the least. Some nuts and a hint of mint. Very accessible and inviting nose, albeit somewhat light.
    • Taste
The attack is similarly light on nuts and honey, but gives up more citrus than you would have expected from the nose. Syrupy. Some spicy oak rears its head midpalate. Orange zest. Lacks some punch and depth, but certainly leaves many a blend in its shadow.
    • Finish
The finish is short to medium, again on nuts, orange zest and light oaky notes.

It's okay, not great, not terrible. Tastes like a cheaper Glenfiddich 12.

Overripe, dry pears. Grapes, vanilla, orange peels. Nice smell, but lacks depth.
    • Taste

A burst of sherry, some ripe fruits. Not much going on. I suspect its chill filtered.
    • Finish
      76 76
      Dry sherry grapes, very short.

  6. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 75 points Connoisseur

Sweet on the nose, cooked pear / apple, some honey, some caramel, some vanilla. Not exciting, but very pleasant and well composed. Not the touch of an alcoholic note. In the mouth then a little bit harsh, somehow perfumed, some fruit, then again sweetish. Finish: rather short, slightly dry and a little fruit and vanilla.

    Decent value for the money
    • Nose
Apple, unripe banana, malt sweetness, a bit of glue, cereals
    • Taste
Hay, unripe banana again, honey, musty shed
    • Finish
a little bit of bitter tea, light waxyness, honey, rather watery but stays long for that, a hint of vanilla

Fruit-cereal with a delicate influence of honey, citrus fruits, apricots, vanilla and woody spiciness in all flavors. Pleasant, uncomplicated drinks with a quite good value.
