  1. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 82 points Super Administrator

Monkey Shoulder is a rather simple but honest and decent quality Blended Malt from the Speyside of Scotland. Young Balvenie features quite prominently on the nose. Sweet fruits, candy apples and a touch of ice wine combine with creamy honey, fine spices and hints of coffee. Delicate maltiness and restrained oak influence complement the otherwise light and sweet character on the palate. The finish is swift, woody and sugary, merging into dark chocolate bitterness. With an excellent price-quality ratio, this dram is certainly better than most blends.

Overall quite a good blend for the price
    • Nose
Unripe bananas and pears, some mustiness as well. Quite malty, probably as it is very spirit driven. Ginger warmth.
    • Taste
Malt notes upfront with vanilla sweetness. The oak spice is noticeable here as well. Slightly too thin but overall a decent palate.
    • Finish
Medium-short finish. Some sweetness balanced out by bitterness of the oak perhaps.

  3. WhiskyLovingPianist did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

N: Waxy pineapple cubes, unripe bananas, and clean honey malt. Doesn’t come across as a blend like so many do, although it is very consolidated.
T: Light arrival - peppery and oaky with resh mint, lamb & pork with sweet malt surging through. Waxy. Nice shape on development - easy
F: Waxy, fresh-ish, creamy, vanilla finish. Not very concise but well blended. Bitter lemon dominates the finish. Very tannic at the death.
C: Surprisingly good considering its reputation and marketing. Lets not get too carried away but there is complexity, age and a simple and shapely journey from sweet to sour.

    Scores a C-

  4. markjedi1 scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

I was expecting a mixers whisky and am convinced it is often used for making cocktails because of the sweet character, but this is much more than that.
    • Nose
The first thing I notice on the nose is a bourbonny butterscotch, augmented by pears, prunes and even strawberry. Honeysweet, to say the least. Some nuts and a hint of mint. Very accessible and inviting nose, albeit somewhat light.
    • Taste
The attack is similarly light on nuts and honey, but gives up more citrus than you would have expected from the nose. Syrupy. Some spicy oak rears its head midpalate. Orange zest. Lacks some punch and depth, but certainly leaves many a blend in its shadow.
    • Finish
The finish is short to medium, again on nuts, orange zest and light oaky notes.

  22. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 75 points Connoisseur

Sweet on the nose, cooked pear / apple, some honey, some caramel, some vanilla. Not exciting, but very pleasant and well composed. Not the touch of an alcoholic note. In the mouth then a little bit harsh, somehow perfumed, some fruit, then again sweetish. Finish: rather short, slightly dry and a little fruit and vanilla.

A good, not difficult whiskey for a drink, but bitterness kills it.
    • Nose
Very unusual, the smell of some fragrant plant, green fruit, vanilla, a lot of vanilla
    • Taste
Gentle, malty, a lot of malt (as I love), the fruit is smaller, pleasant and piteous. Slightly sweet and bitter.
    • Finish
Medium, slightly oily, in general, also pleasant, but it spoils the bitterness that still holds, so you want to drink more

  30. J.K.Ch scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Well, the advantage of this piece is an interesting taste and more than a good price.
    • Nose
In the smell I feel an egg cognac with vanilla, but, and it is nice, the aroma of rum is missing
    • Taste
Gentle spice of nutmeg and nut, caramel, wood. The vanilla and caramel penetrate the fragrance.
    • Finish
In an unnecessarily short descent, the taste of lighter spices and the bitter taste of the odor will disappear. And if I did not read it, I would not want to find banana in it and probably not find it. Yeah, it's there.

  35. sergey.zamyatin scored this whisky 61 points Member Senior

Bitterness in taste and especially in the aftertaste strongly spoil the impression of whiskey.
    • Nose
In the beginning it is rather sharp, but not for long. Further more old oak board, dust and a little apple. A little standing in a glass opens with pear marmalade and vanilla, sometimes a sharp woody varnish slips.
    • Taste
Sweet, woody and a little pepcheny.Potom begin to swing sweet / bitter. The most pleasant thing in taste is a pear in the throat.
    • Finish
Fast change of sweets after a sip for unpleasant bitterness. Not lasting and this is a plus.

Speyside up three. Betting, this Vatted would be scored everywhere point better immediately better if there would be single and not blended malt on the bottle. And hand on heart, where is in this specific case, the difference to another standard single malt, produce but the stills of the three differently named distilleries on the same property (and of course with the same address)?
    • Nose
Hm. Fine thing: orange, apple wedges, tobacco, coconut, honey, other fruits, spicy
    • Taste
      Still slightly orange-dominated fruit, honey

A very good blended whisky without any resistance and almost more candy than whisky.

    (Rating interval 78-82)
    • Nose
Butter scotch, caramel custard, vanilla and milk chocolate. This is candy all over.
    • Taste
It is soft with a careful spiciness and caramel custard, nutmeg and roasted nuts. Milk and black pepper playing in the background.

A monkey around 20 euros (no complaints for this price) that would make you forget that you have rheumatism. Perfect to start!
    • Nose
It is not savannah but there is a little wood and vanilla. I think we'll find this duo all along ... Other companions join the adventure. a little green apple (we feel that there is a youngster in this bottle), and archaeological ruins of lemon.
    • Taste
It's a little fat, a little sweet, a little candied, a little vanilla ... Not much everywhere but without any frills. Simple and pleasant.
    • Finish
The final is as punchy as the onomatopoeia balanced in the old episodes of the Batman and Robin series. But once again, this vanilla sweetness is enough for us.

A decent everyday whisky. Very accessible, relaxing, affordable and, importantly, of good quality too. For those using a hip flask, fill one with Monkey Shoulder - you'll be pleased with a tipple like that.
    • Nose
Mellow, floral notes of lilac, Parma violet/lavender, plum jelly, fruit cake, luscious apricots, bananas, juicy pears, lemonade/cream soda, strawberries?, cherries in a syrup. On the periphery there is a mark of paint and varnish. Aromas change quite rapidly, wane quickly too, alas.
    • Taste
Clean, very soft. Dry wine, vanillin, tea/mint tea, alycha, spa wafers, a tinge of lacquered wood, walnut, cacao, chocolate-covered almonds, marzipan. Switching over to sugared lemon, citron and candied fruits lastly.
    • Finish
Medium to short, but lingering all right. Lettuce, fennel, turnip?, pickle, pickled ginger, cloves, black pepper. Citric tang, candied peels, old oak tannins, liquorice.

Cheers to the men of maltings. At one time, Monkey Shoulder referred to a temporary injury suffered by the malt men when turning the barley by hand. Whilst our malt men are among the few who still turn the barley manually, working conditions are now such that fortunately the injury has been consigned to the past.
Today, the name Monkey Shoulder lives on as an affectionate tribute to the malt men of yore in recognition of the times they sufered for their art.
