There’s a lot of ‘need’ for the combination of peat & sherry malts on todays market. Most of the time once something like that releases, it’s sold out instantly. Somehow this well affordable pearl is being overlooked for quite a while now I guess, since it is still widely available today.
Fair enough, initially I bought this because I wanted an affordable peat & sherry whisky to make my own blend with a bottle that was not able to please me as it was, and so I did. I succeeded in creating a lovely blend but during as well as after this blending session, I tasted this one on its own and I was actually very, very surprised! This is certainly not ‘ a simple whisky to blend with’ . This to me appeared to be a really deserving and rightfully BFYB! It ticks a lot of boxes for people that adore a combination of sherry and peat!
It’s assumed this is a Caol Ila by the way.
    • Nose
This nose is alive and kicking! Active peat wrapped in intense sherried flavors and with some raw spirity flavors at the same time. Loads of sweetness of the px cask are being switched with deep and dark flavors of coffee, cigar tobacco, caramel, milk chocolate (or maybe even the other way around ;) ), musty nougat, ashes, peat, a whiff of clove, smoky vanilla and playful hints of barley sugar. Due to some oxidation in a half full bottle, it made some serious steps in becoming the above. Right after opening the bottle its not fully at its best immediately. Eventually, there’s really a lot going on inside this nose.
    • Taste
Tasteful, creamy, warming and full bodied. It’s thick and syrupy body has got a very good balance to it. Red fruits, sultana’s and sugared cookies lead in the more heavily flavors like espresso coffee, cigar tobacco and dark chocolate. Again some playful spirity flavors get through, giving the whole a rather lively palate.
    • Finish
This extremely sticky finish lingers on for a very long time. Accompanied by loads of dark flavors it really offers you something to chew on for quite a while. Hot Chocolate with whipped cream, cocoa, espresso coffee beans, tobacco, ashes and cigar smoke. Bramble, raisins and again some clove. Simply Lovely!

Yes it’s sherry driven but I assume you’re aware of that if you buy such a bottle. That’s the whole idea of this dram. To give a big and dominant experience.
I really don’t get people that crap off this whisky because of that. I’ve had enough sherry bombs with no balance, sharp edges and restless palates but this is certainly NOT that. So just do not bloody buy it or try it in the first place then! Instead of doing so just to tell others to stay the hell away from it. Maybe they should have listened to their own advise…
I’m going to buy a few more bottles, that’s for sure. P/Q wise an absolute no brainer.

Interesting malt. I actually like it a lot. A great performer for the price at 54.1% and PX finish.

N: peat instantly but then it vanishes, sweet chocolate comes from the PX, red fruits, dried fruits, then some floral notes and some honey with vanilla

P: sweet peat, red fruits, some saltiness here with brine, dried black fruits and PX chocolates (dark and milk chocolate)

F: long pleasant with ash and saltiness and sweetness

    SOLID.

It is how it looks, intense. Peat and sherry turned to 11 on a 10 point scale. A full-on sherry bomb and indeed a peat beast, that takes no hostages. I've compared it to a sherried Ballechin (WBID:156304) and the similarities are striking. No brainer for the money and I wouldn't mind an extra bottle. Fun to have, and drink, of course.
    • Nose
Alright, this has seen some peat AND some sherry. Obvious peat, sauerkraut, smoked bacon, brine, fish oil and barbecue sauce. Followed by blood orange, kiwi, maraschino cherry and blueberry compote. Then assorted chocolate, caramel, cola candy and licorice root. Also almond paste, rhubarb, vanilla, honey and some eucalyptus in the back. Rarely does a cask overwhelm a peated spirit, but they've done it here. A sherry finish you say? Some have called this out as Ballechin, and it fits that profile indeed.
    • Taste
I expected smoked syrup, but peat is always more upfront on the palate. Its name is fitting now. We have peat, brine, iodine, smoked bacon, ash and barbecue sauce. Then strawberry, raisin, maraschino cherry, lemon and date. Also dark chocolate, jaffa cake, caramel, treacle, Dutch licorice and flat cola. Further on honey, cough syrup, ginger and some cinnamon. Reminiscent of a sherried Ledaig I recently had, only less salty. Distilled sweet & smoky barbecue sauce!
    • Finish
Medium in length. Cold smoke, orange, kiwi, lemon juice, milk chocolate, butterscotch, salted licorice, syrup and mint.

Sweet sauerkraut in the nose, if the time is not Ledaig ????

Very soft and round in the mouth, sweet and fruity-woody.

In the long finish, the sauerkraut flashes briefly before it ends with coffee and dried fruit.
    Length: 7/10

Great smoker, great intensity without getting too alcoholic.

    Note 1-

in fact its pretty good value for money. the whisky itself with its well integrated alcohol is impressive for such a young bottling and of good quality. there are worse bottlings with similiar stats out there, thats for sure.

in the end were still talking about a very young malt in cask strength around 30 to 40€. considering this, its a good one. just dont expect too much of it (or its fire-red color ;-).
imcl/smokehead would charge 50-60 for that.

if youre looking for a drinkable, cheap, sherried and peated cask strength, there you go. should be a interesting whisky with ten to 12 years.

it does really benefit from water!
    • Nose
      84 84
      without water:
young peat. you know that young, rather stinky, mouldy peat notes like from finlaggan or smokehead? thats what you get here, altough not too offputting. alcohol is very well integrated, i recently had a 22yo with 46% which gave me a lot more alcohol in the nose.
its indeed heavily peated, guess 85% peat, then 15% soft and barely noticeable sherry notes in the back but they struggle to come through.

      with water:
tames down the peat, more sweet notes of the px and vanilla appear.
    • Taste
      86 86
soft arrivial with initial sweetness. peat is now way less prominent. once again very well integrated alcohol. almost not noticeable, that this is cask strenth. a nice mixture of peat, sweet px and actually a oak kick.

      with water:

even sweeter and rounder. peat and sherry mix quite well together. this is way better with water.

all in all I like it much more in the mouth than in the nose.
    • Finish
      84 84
powerful but without any alcoholic burn. sweetened peat lingers. medium length but the taste stays for long.

      with water:
      not much changes.

So ... it was really delicious. And if you take the price into account, it's pretty awesome.
    • Nose
      Colour:
      Red - brown

      Nose:
A nice, dark sweetness comes towards me first. Behind it a fine, moist note of pipe smoke. The colleague smells so wonderful of sugared berries. Raspberries and cherries in a chocolate coating. I'll leave it ...
With a little time in the glass comes a worn leather note. Something like leather work gloves. In addition, spicy wood and something like roasted almonds with a lot of brown sugar. Plums and juniper. In the background a little lime and slightly earthy.
    • Taste
Spicy start. The alcohol tinkles pleasantly on the tongue. I immediately find a nutty bitterness here. In addition, this very pleasant pipe smoke aroma. Not a specialist now, but it doesn't taste like Islay. When the dry wave is through, the sweetness spreads out nicely and comfortably. A mix of berries, cherries and plums. There's something spicy that reminds me a bit of nutmeg. A metallic, rusty undertone is a little off the beaten track in the background. But fits nicely into the picture.
    • Finish
Pleasantly long. First spicy and with dry, smoked herbs. Then pleasantly sweet at the end.

PLV is an absolute upper class! Point
    • Nose
      87 87
Very intensive. Lots of sweet sherry, red fruits and a lot of dirty smoke. More on the dry side from the smoke. Clear peanuts that are heavily roasted. Smoked meat and lots of sweetness!
    • Taste
      86 86
First sweet, then the dirty smoke and the red fruits. Slightly sour. Young but very tasty.
    • Finish
      87 87
Here he lives from alcohol and sweet smoke. Successful graduation.

Very tasty smoker, nice mixture of flavors, pleases quite a lot and has a good PLV. Easy to drink, but not necessarily special.

    • Taste
Smoky with sherry, spicy with fig and vanilla, some plums and dried fruits

Oof Madone! If you don't like PX matured whisky, stay the hell away from this. Otherwise you're in for a treat. An intense, concentrated sweetness (jammy fruits, raisins) yet it's the balsamic vinegar note that stands out. The smoke is subtle by comparison. There's a hint of barbecued meat, seared bacon and some vanilla custard.
    • Taste
There's chocolate, bonfire smoke, peat, leather and an assortment of spices. Yet this is where it falls apart a bit. Not to say the nose is highly integrated, but this certainly isn't. It's like a mixture of PX and peated single malt and the two don't play well.
    • Finish
Pretty dry and somewhat ashy. Long.

Great smoke and sherry dram with incredibly good PLV and brilliant color!
    • Nose
Sweet campfire smoke, BBQ, milk chocolate, relatively dark and intense red fruits, nice fruity sweetness, the alcohol shows presence at the beginning, removed grape-nut chocolate
    • Taste
Campfire, slightly maritime, great red fruits, pleasant sweetness, spicy oak influence, subtle dark chocolate
    • Finish
Sparkling, slightly warming, nice, pleasant smoke, red fruits, minimally woody, getting drier over time

  24. PeatyGonzales scored this whisky 87 points Newbie

    Nose:
Sherry, smoke, liquorice, wood and coffee, dark grapes and a hint of clove, musty-sweet and noticeably alcoholic.

    Taste:
Lots of sherry and damp cellar wood, not too much smoke, but sweet, dark, heavy and fruity. Has a lot of bums!

    Outlet:
Relatively long, woody, rather dry, tobacco, leather, ash.

    Conclusion:
Now not mega complex, but quite tasty (if you like the above). You can drink it straight, but it is quite tight. Really good for the price. Tastes better than it is. Nice part!

Smoke, fruitiness and sweetness harmonize wonderfully with the feeding strength. The PX sherry influence is clearly noticeable. Water is not needed for this malt! Super PLV and a clear buy recommendation! My previous surprise in 2020.

It's a nice dram. You get PX with smoke as advertised but also in this order. This is the first time that the barrel swallows the smoke. But delicious.

The full boom of sweet sherry and strong smoke. For me it has a lot of sulfur, but it doesn't bother due to the dominance of sherry and smoke.
    • Nose
The whisky has three very dominant basic aromas: strong campfire smoke, smoked ham, and cherry jam. In addition, clearly sulfur in the match head variant, burnt rubber, and also salty peanuts.
    • Taste
Strong start, silky mouthfeel. Starts sweet, again cherry and forest berry jam, with very salty bacon. Then comes the smoke, strong, with bitter notes, and some sulfur again.
    • Finish
Medium length. Remains sweet, the berries are still there for a long time, but the smoke is dominant and a sweet bitterness.

  29. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

The name is program. PX and Rauch, full on the twelve. Despite the low price, no annoying or too young notes. You can do that if you don't mind the considerable amount of sherry with which the whisky was mixed here. ;)
