One of the best whisky I was able to try and for sure the best Ben Nevis
An incredible balance of distillery character and sherry cask - simply beautiful!

    Dark & Sweet Marmalade

It is fair to say that Ben Nevis 1994 to 1997 is among the best stuff recently produced at this distillery – obviously in combination with good wood. Today I will try a single cask from 1995 – obviously a sherry cask – that was bottled by the German company Sansibar after 24 years of maturation, for the Swedish whisky club Slainte by Magnus Fagerström. What a lovely color…

Honeysweet, deliciously sherried nose on red lace candy, blood oranges, baked Granny Smith, gooseberry, melon, honey and… cola! The only thing that detracts slightly is a hint of sulfur, but that evaporates quickly, making this an candy-like fruit bomb on the nose.

Nicely oily and somewhat spicy on black pepper and nutmeg. The fruit returns on the palate, but in a dark and sweet marmalade. Some red fruit kicks in, but quickly evolves into a fig jam (like the one you get served for breakfast in Tunisia). Mildly drying. Eminently quaffable without water.

The finish is very long, warm, dark & sweet, but leaves the mouth completely dry.

This is again one of those gems, making me wonder out loud why the owners don’t release more of this stuff themselves. Don’t get me wrong: the official releases are good, but this is excellent.

Papaya on the nose with gunpowder smoke and soya sauce with rich dark fruits, tobacco and chocolate. Full and buttery on the palate, with liquorice, cinnamon, and oranges. Mocha and black pepper on the finish.

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Very meaty (in a dry, not a juicy way), rubber boots, dried brown fruits. Sulphur and sherry casks. Nice and very Mortlach-y. (91p)
TASTE: The arrival is slightly sweet. On the mid palate tasty, complex and varied. Dried fruits, sulphur, some black pepper. Later tropical fruit; mango and papaya. Lovely (91-92p)
FINISH: Long, fruity, ends on light sulphur. (90p)
OVERALL: Wonderful. Total score 91 points.

An excellent whisky, the strongest side of which is its nose: complex, layered and even sulphury notes do not spoil it. The palate is also good but not that complex, staying on a typical sherried side. My overall impression is very positive, however, this expression isn't unfortunately a masterpiece.
    • Nose
Thick, sweetish, buttery, heavy spices (cloves, cinnamon), burnt caramel, honey, sulphury notes, oranges, dark chocolate, baked apples, light mineral (chalky) notes, a hint of oak. Water adds some berryness and amplifies mineral tones.
    • Taste
Slightly peppery with nutmeg feeling, a bit oily, berries marmalade, caramelized orange zest, some liquorice, herbal notes, soft drying oak.
    • Finish
Quite long, slightly sweet, tobacco and leathery notes, astringent and very drying.
