Today I'm trying this Longrow which was part of a virtual tasting session with Springbank. I've had a few versions of Longrow in the past and quite liked them so I see this being no different. Let's see how it tastes.

Nose begins with salt, then earthy aromas, then light peat smoke arrives with time in the glass, lemon juice.

Palate starts with lemon juice, salt, earth, bonfire smoke appearing.

Finish is more lemon juice, salt, smoke, warming spices, and finally oils.

Longrow is one of three brands of whiskys produced at the Springbank Distillery. Unlike its sisters (Springbank and Hazelburn), Longrow is peaty. For this exploration, I'm starting with this Longrow Peated.

To produce this single malt, Springbank was inspired by peaty whiskys from the Isle of Islay. However, we will see that this single malt is much more than a simple imitation of those produced on the southernmost island of the Hebrides archipelago.

This Longrow Peated is a 46% bottled Non Age Statement (NAS). He is dressed in straw gold which is very pleasing to the eye.

The first nose indicates a rather saline, almost floral peat. I also find a farmy aspect to this peat, on straw and hay. It has a cereal character similar to Springbank whiskys. It is very fine and very fresh.

During the first sip, I welcome a nice smoke. Then come vanilla, mint and caramel. The smoke is more discreet than on the nose. It is rather easy to grasp, and relatively different from Islay peaty with that hint of cereal that is everywhere.

It is not surprising that the first notes of the final composition are smoky. It is astringent, delicate and rather long, on a white smoke, with a touch of earth, it seems to me.

I had the impression of eating a good ice cream! This Longrow Peated is more than seductive in its freshness, with a cereal and farmy profile that guarantees the typicality of the tasting. Then, its price (around 60 €) puts it in the category of unbeatable value for money.

Smells like springbank 10 years, tastes tropical fruit juice, some blunt peat, and the finish is not short

From "J & A. Mitchell”, also owner and operator of the Springbank Distillery, comes the Longrow Whisky. Longrow was once one of the numerous distilleries in Campbeltown, which, however, had to close in 1896. The brand was revived by its neighbor Springbank in 1973. The "Longrow" is characterized by its double distillation and its comparatively high phenol content of around 50 ppm, which comes from drying the mashed barley over peat fires for 27 hours. Storage took place in ex-Bourbon casks. The very first Longrow Peated was released in 1980 and has since become a classic within the Longrow portfolio.

Straight smoky but gentle, quite sweet, nice cereal based flavour, and that beautiful slightly 'dirty' character that you can often find in Springbank Malts. Well-balanced without any rough edges. Amazing!
