Great. Basically a light, simple whisky, but it is still complex and has many facets. I am amazed because it is easy to drink but still offers so much. A perfect spring or summer whisky. Delightfully refreshing and floral. The bottle will please me regularly this spring and summer.

Many flavors come at once. Sweet fruit, grapes, lychee, herbs, nice, spicy barrel (slightly woody) my first thought was Asian jasmine. Now I still have pear, there is a vanilla sweetness behind everything and a hint of sherry spice. Super interesting, jasmine / herbs / pear clearly in the foreground
    • Taste
      86 86
again jasmine, spicy oak; delicate bitter note, almost chocolate; slowly I have this typical, bitter green tea aroma for the first time; Still strong pear, but also a little green apple; pretty flowery, reminds me of a flowering meadow in summer
    • Finish
      85 85
Oak; Herbs; this typical sherry flavor; delicate bitter, herbs again, jasmine again.
After a long time, the tart green tea note remains (but not unpleasant), reminds me a bit of Matcha tea.

Colour: golden brown, slight oxidation tones

Aroma/nose: Fresh yellow pear and subtle mint. Subtle Arabian spices like nutmeg

Texture: slightly oily but just on the edge of staying fresh and light

Palate: The yellow fruit gets a bit more citrusy and the spices come through more - again nutmeg and something heavier like tonka bean. Slightly astringent, here you can guess the green tea...

Finish: Long-lasting, then really reminiscent of a heavily brewed green tea

Conclusion: Something completely different from the Swedes. I had no great expectations of the Grönt Te and was left interested. Certainly not for every day but knows how to inspire.

    The nose is world class!
    • Nose

Great cutie! Fresh with apple, pear and apricot. Green tea and herbs. You don't notice Olorosso at first. After a long smell, red berries follow. Add vanilla and pepper. Great spices later.
After the first sip, the Olorosso world opens up clearly.
    • Taste
      83 83
Straight dry wort. Woody green tea with a peppery taste. Apple. citrus. Then again a lot of (but tasty) wood with a strong Olorosso fruit mix.
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium - long. Sweet. Wood. Cherry. Slight bitterness from the tea.

I must admit I had a bit of fear about the green tea involved and expected something I wouldn’t like, and I was very wrong. As I said earlier, I’m not a regular tea drinker, and I honestly could not identify notes related to tea. And regarding the “rest” of the whisky, I thought it was a quite good single malt, not too spicy, not overpowered by the sherry seasoning, and with a subtle influence of the few virgin casks that didn’t give an over the top wood aspect. A very good whisky.
    • Nose
      84 84
The nose starts immediately with orchard fruits (peaches, pear and cherry) and vanilla. Then citrus notes and honey appear as well as a slightly herbal note. I’m not finding any trace of Japanese green tea on the nose even while squinting the nose though. A pinch of pepper is also present on the background, not making this a spicy nose however. The nose gives the impression of something young and spirity, with some kind of watered down solvent.
    • Taste
      87 87
The arrival is a bit spicy with cinnamon and ginger, and bitter with some cider apples and dark chocolate. On a second sip, there’s a watered down sweetness appearing at first but quickly disappearing behind the spices. Leather and tobacco leaves appear later, and the bitterness finally evolves with grapefruit notes.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is medium in length, slightly drying on the tongue, with dark chocolate and grapefruit as well as oak spices.

My first Mackmyra. I'm glad to have tasted this, but I'm not sure I should have started here. It would have been nice to have some context to put this in.

Mostly this is a well done Sherry bomb. Not over sherried, but sweet and fruity and offset by long lasting, buzzing Szechuan, cardamom and some bitter chocolate in the finish.

The tea adds another nice dimension. It complements everything and is integrated skillfully as to not get in the way.

The blurb on Master of Malt says they used "Yame Sencha, Yame Gyokuro, Kaoribo Hojicha and Yame Matcha Shinobi teas" to season the cask.

I'm not exactly sure what that means, but shinobi-cha means ice-brewed and I know juuust enough about Japanese tea to know the difference between the varieties.

Gyokuro - Highest grade, early harvest, shaded for 20+ days

Sencha - High grade, early harvest, not shaded

Kaoribo Hojicha - Late harvest, roasted, mostly stalks

Matcha - Early harvest, shaded, ground into powder

I can't get much of the Kaoribo Hojicha, which is darker and more earthy, but the "green" flavour of the others is clearly presented. If I was pushed, I'd say more sencha/matcha, but I'm not confident.

Whatever the technique and proportions, they add a freshness that sits nicely and pairs unexpectedly well with the cardamom, IMO.

I wonder if this is caffeinated?
    • Nose
waxy chocolate, raisin, yellow cherry, herbal (yerba, matte) tarragon, conference pear, slightly overripe, dark plums, vanilla, assorted candy, orange soda
    • Taste
Halloween candy: mixed gummy fruit lifesavers, chocolate buttons, milk duds, poached pear in syrup, candied ginger, mild Szechuan
    • Finish
Heres the tea - uncured, still green tasting, then cardamom, unsweetened cocoa, mildly bitter herbs, mineral salts, malt, Szechuan

Mackmyra dares to do a special experiment here, which I think has been a success. The green tea adds some interesting herbal notes to the overall picture. But even as a tea lover, I find it difficult to clearly assign these notes to tea. In general, Grönt Te is a relatively simple, uncomplicated malt that's great for sipping on the terrace on warm summer evenings.

    • Nose
It starts very fresh and light with vanilla and apples, as well as some citrus. I also find some caramel and butter cookies. In addition, I also perceive a slightly spicy and herbal note. I would associate this with the green tea rather than the barrel, although I cannot directly identify the tea as such. After trying it for the first time, I think I can smell the sherry a little more. The aroma now has a little more depth and seems less sweet to me than at first. At the same time, the fruits also come into their own.
    • Taste
I can find the vanilla, the cookies, and the apples again. I am reminded of fruity chewy candies. The herbal note of green tea is more intense on the tongue than on the nose. But even at this point I'm not sure if I would interpret this note as green tea if I tasted the malt blindly. Nevertheless, it offers a nice addition.
    • Finish
In the finish, the impressions hardly change. Oak notes are hardly to be discovered. The finish remains pleasantly sweet, with herbs and vanilla.

An interesting and unusual experience of using cask, which used to hold green tea. For me, this was reflected in the taste.

The same recognizable florality, pronounced vanilla, green apple, the taste of Provencal herbs, and green tea infusions.

The taste of green apple, lime petals and vanilla, a little tart.

  14. Official tasting note

    official description:

Mackmyra "Grönt Te" is a Swedish single malt whisky that was finally stored in a freshly saturated ex-Oloroso barrel. The barrel was saturated with a mixture of Oloroso wine and the leaves of a vintage green tea from Japan. This results in a gently spicy and aromatic whisky with a fruity and floral texture, with notes of the best vanilla, green apple and aromatic green tea.

Mackmyra "Grönt Te" has a light amber color with a red tinge and is suitable for all occasions.

Nose: flowery spice and fruity berries join notes of green tea, a little white pepper and roasted vanilla. Dried grapes, citrus fruits, pears and wild berries.

Mouth: Fruity and floral texture with fine vanilla, tart notes of green tea, light spice and green apples.

Summary: Tart, fruity spice with a hint of green leaves and aromatic vanilla.

    casks:
    Freshly saturated Ex-Oloroso barrel, 128 L
    New and first-fill Oloroso barrel, 128 L
    First-fill bourbon barrel, 100–200 L
First-fill barrel made of Swedish oak, 100 L

    - quite an intense one, a little unusual
    Whisky,
    - has a special something that is difficult to describe
    taste
    - but unfortunately there is a youthful alcohol taste
    also not to hide
    - nice experiment, but definitely too expensive for about 55 €

    • Taste

Definitely something special, you can try it. Whole bottle would be too much for me.

Banana milk, light honey notes. Pfanner iced tea. Slightly tart green tea, overall rather creamy.

A nice easy-to-drink whisky for mild summer evenings
    • Nose
Baked banana and a honey sweetness
    • Taste
The honey banana releases some wood and gradually the green tea comes to the fore - albeit very discreetly.
    • Finish
Slightly astringent as can be expected with green tea.

  26. MickMatrix scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The back and forth between sweet and bitter is interesting.
I like the minty note in the spirit and the green tea underlines this quite well.

I'm not unhappy to have tried it.
    • Nose

Great sweetness. Very pleasant aroma. Something like jelly bananas. Cotton candy.
The green tea is clear. Vanilla. Overripe pear.
      Light herbs. Freshly cut shrubs.
    • Taste
      83 83
Good start. With fruity sweetness and bitter notes.
The pear and the banana can still be felt far in the background.
Unfortunately, the depth is missing. Here the Swede is giving something away.
    • Finish
      81 81
Then almost nothing comes here. It leaves with sour notes and white pepper.

It's such an easy drinker and a very more-ish whisky, yet challenging and with plenty to discover.
    • Nose
Sweet fruits, the sherry influence very noticeable but not dominant. A touch of lychees, but also lightly floral and a tinge of honey and sultanas. Some distant oak spices in the background. Very subtle notes of tea leaves.
    • Taste
Some spicy oak, juicy fruits, herbs and vanilla, but also a good amount of floral honey. Some nutmeg, but also pears, green apples and a pleasant bitterness.
    • Finish
Lingering spices and a feint sweetness.

Very floral, white flowers and light berries, lychees, fresh and grassy notes. In the background spicy tones of green tea and fresh wood, vanilla. Light but surprisingly complex. Pleasantly bitter start (green tea), floral, pear and green apple are added to the lychee. Spicy, with bitter herbs. Pleasantly long finish between freshness and spicy bitterness. Fine.

A beautiful and interesting summer whisky, light and fresh without overwhelming anyone. Mackmyra's seasonal bottlings have convinced me for years and this one is no exception.
    • Nose
      80 80
Very floral notes of bright flowers, just like walking through a garden awakening after winter in spring. Green tea is also beautifully inserted in the scent of freshly blooming plants. I mainly find pear as fruit notes. At the end there is a light vanilla, spiciness is hardly noticeable.
    • Taste
      83 83
A beautiful sweetness on the tongue, paired with bitter floral aromas without becoming bitter. The pear is present, with a bit of wood and a slight spiciness.
    • Finish
      81 81
Quite short, but the impression of fresh green and flowers remains. The oak remains in the mouth, vanilla and a little mild pepper again.
