The most distant peat in the drunk Shirley barrel Laphroaig, the bitterness has considerable layering and skill in it, and there is no difference in the performance of the wine body and barrel. It just feels that this Olororso barrel is either heavy I filled it many times, or the barrel-run technique was not good, and the flavor was slightly monotonous.
    • Nose
Xiaoer Chinese medicine granules, elegantly reminiscent of Bunahaben’s chocolate hazelnut latte. Coconut milk, beef breast oil, fragrant milk tea, honey, peat tame sticks and bones, charcoal smoked meat, incense sticks, dehydrated vegetables and tobacco. More pure bittersweet, dark fruits are not too much, after all, it is just an oloroso finish, raisins, plum, sherry, syrup, soy sauce. The influence of oak is calm, almonds, walnuts, hemp rope, shavings.
    • Taste
Bucket O is sure to be correct. It is a bit like cold coffee, with a fluttering bitterness and a little bit of fruit acidity. It is only afterwards that the black sweetness and the over-charring of the roasted food gradually appear. Cigar, black jam, bacon, dried figs, walnut oil, slightly spicy. Very complex and interesting bitterness, tar, Chinese medicine, mud, evergreen needles, theophylline, brewed soy sauce.
Strong, low fat, low sweetness, no tannins, no astringency, outstanding bitterness, no spicy feeling.
    • Finish
Long-term, cocoa, bitter hemp, licorice, peat, fireworks, herbs.

Superb Laphroaig, with fantastic orange and smoke notes, I may need to seek out a bottle...
    • Nose

I get chocolate covered orange peel, liquor soaked raisins, a bit of smoke and bacon grease. Some tobacco too. A more elegant Laphroaig profile than I have previously experienced. Highly enjoyable.

Too often I experience a great nose, but the taste simply cannot follow. Here the notes follow exactly. The alcohol is excellently integrated and I can chew on it at length.

Long, orange, smoke, and bacon. Sublime for my taste.

A sample that is close to the ideal.
    • Nose
      93 93
Prunes, dried tea rose, tea leaves, plum jam, velvety aromas of leather and tobacco leaf, smoke does not dominate and complements all this range of flavors. A little polish, a carpenter's shop.
    • Taste
      92 92
The taste is sweet and dry, as if you ate prunes and got a tobacco leaf. Rich, but not cloying. In the mouth, all the characteristics that were in the smell are repeated: both varnish and leather, and black berries and dried fruits. And even a little polish.
    • Finish
      92 92
The aftertaste is long, rich, rich, intelligent.

We managed to taste such a sample, the tasting took place with a circle of scotch lovers, and for the seed there was another bourbon Lough, which is rarely found. But it's not about him now.
First nose: very closed, let it breathe well.
Nose: a bouquet of aromas, which is not there, a fountain of fruits peaches, apricots, dried apricots, raspberries, chokeberry, an industrial theme, machine oil in the workshop, metal, the same working machines with metal shavings. And everyone noted the aromas of greasy earth (humus) when you went to pick worms in childhood before fishing, and how strange this topic is here very organically intertwined with fruit. Rancio is a buzzword characteristic of oloroso - mushrooms, tobacco, nuts, cheese and fried bread, you will definitely find all this there if you sit with this dram longer.
Taste: very strong side, full-bodied, as all participants noticed, heavy for late autumn, black bread, spices, astringency of black chokeberry, again I want to say black soil, but how do I know this taste?) Oil, etc.
Aftertaste: Very dry, probably the driest that was in memory, but this wonderful astringent astringent aroma of a wonderful drink does not let me go to this day.
Undeniably 93 is with an emphasis on the public degu, I think he would have received at least 95 at home.

The nose needs quite some time to open but turns lovely. Classic refined Islay peaty sherry nose. Palate was excellent after a few sips. Lovely sweet and sour fruity notes perfectly balanced with sherry and earthy notes. Beware with water, though, it brought for me some organic notes I found in a few (peaty) sherry whiskies.
    An excellent Laphroaig.
    • Nose
Start on tobacco leaves, leather and dried fruits (prunes, raisins). A bit closed at first. Opens on smoked meat, coastal and resinous notes. Aromatic herbs, bonfire, ashes, light sulphury notes. An improvised barbecue on the beach ? Tarry and camphory notes. Gentle nose.
    • Taste
Dried fruits (prunes), a sour fruitiness (blackberries, raspberries), leather, tobacco, chocolate, orangey notes and earthy peat.
With water, hints of rancio and earthy notes on the nose, a bit organic on the palate and I'm not too fond of these notes.
    • Finish
      Long, chocolate, lingering earthy peat.

On the nose there's intense cherry, caramelised sugar, forrest fruits and old leather, maple cured bacon and of course smoke. On the palate it's oily and medicinal, thickly layered with cherry syrup and black pepper, mint and peaches, meat with mint jelly, all of it carrying through with a wave of smokey earth onto the finish. Intense and complex.

Great balance and superb integration of sherry and peat, refined medicinal peat with toffee, leather, chocolate, bitter orange notes

I have to say this is a BEAUTIFUL 90s Laphroaig. The sherry influence is very smooth, dense, and flawless. No wonder why Serge said so.

This is one of the best LP i have tried. There is a very good balance between the peat and sherry. It reminds me of the SMWS 29.260.

Gaija sums up the sentiment perfectly. I also was completely disappointed to see this exploitative behaviour.
Although I live in Australia, this website is the best source of whisky information and whisky interaction I have, being a centralized hub for people who are passionate about whisky. Let's keep it this way!!

Tasting Notes by Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    NOSE
Meaty and leathery: singed roast beef on a new car seat. Butter icing with a hint of mint pushes through the middle, dragging a dried orange peel and berry fruit behind it: blackcurrants, dried cherries and raisins. Dried stone fruit notes build: apricots and plums. Hiding at the back is a pile of charcoal stirred through a bucket of molasses.

    PALATE
Much softer than the nose suggests, with a rich and sweet Demerara and liquorice base covered in scattered fruit: stewed orange segments and dried peel; dried cherries and cherry jam; spicy baked apples and pears; blackcurrants and blackberries. Tendrils of earthy peat smoke infused with a touch of TCP are wrapped around everything. New leather sits behind.

    FINISH
Rich and earthy peat lingers, with flashes of liquorice, mint and berry compote appearing and disappearing.

    COMMENT
A dram that roars on the nose and purrs on the palate. Laphroaig’s spirit often hides its fruity character under medicinal smoke, but 21 years of maturation have peeled back the TCP to reveal the distillery’s heart.

The integration between spirit and cask is fantastic.
    • Nose
Gentle smoke, cigar tobacco, leather and shoe polish. There's a touch of well-seasoned grilled beef also. The sherry maturation expresses itself in the form fruitiness as well. Think prunes, sultanas and blackberries. Hint of soy sauce. The balance is top notch — extremely well-integrated.
    • Taste
Oily stuff with a medicinal touch. However, the rubber soles, tar and peat smoke are just one piece of the puzzle. This is a sweet and fruity dram with candied oranges, cherry syrup and blackberries. There's some pink peppercorn too, as well as a bit of furniture polish.
    • Finish
Lingering peat, orris root and a subtle sweetness. Long.
