Who would have thought: 4 years old and so far. Heavy peated Irish is not something you have every day, at least these days. Another very good example that the secret giant among Ireland's distilleries, the Great Northern Distillery, should definitely be on the note.
    • Nose
      87 87
Strong smoke, the composition and intensity of which is reminiscent of a peated scotch - which is no wonder, since the peat used actually comes from Scotland due to the lack of supply in Ireland. Hardly any young notes, no pear, no green branches, instead chocolate, cinnamon and coriander, marjoram, nutmeg, spicy honey.
    • Taste
      87 87
Powerful start, which immediately comes up with a good portion of peat smoke. Chocolate, cocoa and white coffee, leather, dry wood. Spreads beautifully throughout the mouth, filling every pocket. Has a surprising volume, which you wouldn't expect from a 4 year old.
    • Finish
      86 86
Definitely medium-long finish. Still the intense peat smoke, plus lots of chocolate and burnt caramel, fruit candies, marzipan.

    Notes from my blind tasting
    • Nose
light smoke which is more in the background, slightly sweet and malty, lots of light fruits, slightly spicy, herbs, a little salty, no alcohol to be heard, with warmth the smoke note has a somewhat chemical effect, but then becomes a little more subtle and the fruity notes come up a bit stronger, with water the smoky note is as good as gone and the alcohol comes out somewhat, as does citrus fruits
    • Taste
lots of light fruits, pepper, some smoke, spicy, malty, very strong, later becoming a bit bitter, here the alcohol can be clearly felt, but not unpleasant, with warmth the malt note is stronger at the beginning and it has a more spicy than fruity effect Water is far less powerful at the start and the malty fruity comes to the fore, appears softer and rounder, also here slightly citrus fruits
    • Finish
very strong and spicy with again a lot of herbs and light fruits, a bit salty, later becoming a bit bitter here too. The fruit basket stays in the mouth for a long time, the finish does not change noticeably with warmth, with water more citrus fruits and herbal notes appear in the finish. It is also less powerful but still slightly peppery

(Blind tasting) Has some expansion reserve with water.
    • Nose

Burned tires, campfires, wet corrugated cardboard, cowshed
    • Taste
      87 87
Citrus-centric, but does everything a young smoker should be able to do.
    • Finish
      84 84
      Astringent, but not much else.

Looks older than he is. I couldn't really find all the fruits of the other notes.
    • Nose

First minerally, before the smoke develops and gets stronger and stronger. Cow dung, ashes, leather, nutmeg
    • Taste
      86 86
Heavy smoke, with a bit of effort other aromas slowly come through ... pepper, black tea, oiled wood, leather
    • Finish
      85 85
Surprisingly long, very warm and smoky. In between, a slight sharpness of youth.

Sweet, honey, muesli, caramel, peach, sugar syrup and of course smoke, of the greasy kind!
    • Taste
      85 85
Strong, smoke, honey, caramel, black pepper, malty, slightly metallic
    • Finish
      85 85
      Warming, black pepper, smoke, malty

Despite noticeable youth, nice fruit and peat notes. Really good whisky. Surprising in the Irish blind tasting.

    - BLIND COST -

Aha, a young smoker. Smells fresh, citrus notes, very present (cold) smoke, but a bit metallic.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is convincing. I am an avowed fan of young smokers, because here I get what I need when it should be smoky. You can taste, however, that the malt is not really old. I see the best smokers between the ages of 8-10; this one is probably no more than 5 years old. Very caramel, strong, clean start. I would estimate it to be between 55-58% vol.

The caramel reminds me of a Glenglassaugh Evolution, which I was allowed to taste as a 5cl bottle. The smoke (although there are also smoky young Glassaugh's) does not allow me to infer the latter.

In principle, it could be a lot, just smoky, a little metallic, young and big. But as I said, if you feel like smoke, then he delivers.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is then less good again. A slightly bitter note remains.

I'd guess a big peat at cask strength. Possibly a Christmas Edition. In terms of style, at least it hits the same line.
