A rather closed Springbank that took time to open in the glass. Don't feel I found any cask influence in this one as I think the spirit character took it out of play. Once it did open, tasted like a nice 12 year old CS Springbank.

The whisky is very closed, I had to resort to water, but it was worth it, a very wide range of derivatives, a rather deep, complex, generally very interesting, albeit difficult experience.
    • Nose
Closed, dry, dusty boards, a little varnish, deep-frying oil, polish, thinner, some dry herbs, mineral shades, hard to open, dark chocolate, cappuccino, creamy sweet motifs - boiled condensed milk, fondant; more dry herbs, old leather goods; added water - it definitely helped, the aroma became more subtle, fluffy, although nothing fundamentally changed, except, perhaps, light citrus tones and pipe tobacco.
    • Taste
      Dense, rich, drying, tart oak notes, sharp mineral shades, dried fruits - prunes, raisins, dried apples; polish, furniture varnish, ginger, a little black pepper, fudge, exploding caramel, cola; with water more open, bright, more pepper, citrus notes and tropical fruits;
    • Finish
Spicy, refreshing, oak, lacquer, dark chocolate, nuts, light minerality, burnt match heads; with water it is practically the same, maybe a little more cheerful and fresher.

Without comparative candidates, it would have easily passed for me as a sherry ripening. Looks older than 13 years.
    • Nose
Dried sweet fruits, very light dry smoke, some citrus (orange) and menthol freshness behind. Strongly noticeable alcohol is much better with a few drops of water. After a lot of time in the glass (> 1h) the nose changes more towards grapes and oranges
    • Taste
Sweet, there are grapes here, also dried as raisins. When chewing in the mouth, a beautiful film made of old-looking oak lies on the tongue. Hot pepper. Smoke can be felt in the background.
    • Finish
It takes a long time for the aromas to fade. The sweet fruit notes form a unit with now strong tannins on the tongue, and at the very end a hint of smoke flashes through.

  10. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

He surprised me very positively, I used to like jumpers the most, but over time I got more and more with small missing notes, then here also the always hop or top wine finishes, but it was a perfect combination, not the one Most complex or roundest malt, but very aromatic and full of character.
    • Nose
Ui, quite clear smoke for Springer and fresh matches, fresh suede, nutmeg, roasted malt, liquorice, cinnamon, clove, tobacco leaves, freshly grated chocolate, oregano, spiced bitter orange
    • Taste
Red gummy bears and berries, clove, nutmeg, rough walnut and charcoal charcoal, cinnamon, wild shrubs with cherries, liquorice, tobacco, earl gray tea, a little black pepper and a little salt
    • Finish
Long, wild berries, roasted malt, nut mixture, some liquorice and anise, leather, warming

A set, polished malt, which I would have estimated much older than it is. And Claret (= Bordeaux barrel) maturation? Really now ? Amazing.
At least in the nose I find - pure and blindly enjoyed - no wine flavors, but rather sherry.

If you give it water, there is clearly dark cherry in the nose (ah, so wine) and in the mouth the spring bench aroma becomes much clearer, the sweetness declines somewhat. Exciting.

I don't really like wine finshes per se, but there are just a few, these bottlings, where the wine is withdrawn and understated and which I like very much. This is one of them.
    • Nose
      90 90
Dried apricot, fine old-school sherry, a little cigar smoke in the background. Deep and dense. Fudge, mango, peach, warm yellow fruit. Honey, hazelnuts, nutty espresso. A hint of menthol. Peat. Complex, but takes time and only gradually reveals more of itself. Shifts constantly. Great nose.
    • Taste
      89 89
Wonderfully fruity, lush, sweet, full and with plenty of power. Plus plenty of dry cigar smoke, earthy, mineral and peaty.
Peppery and nuts are added with warmth. Concentrated, with good volume, for chewing.
    • Finish
      88 88
Cigar smoke, peach and toffee, peat, hazelnut, quite long. Ends dry, but no bitterness. Creme brulee.

I had this malt once before in the glass in 2015 and found it rather unspectacular at the time. Today, however, I feel this bottling as extremely delicious and interesting. Sweetness and fruit, wood and earth, peat and smoke, leather and tobacco, the flavors change every second, just wonderful!

    23/23/22/22 (90P)
    • Nose
      90 90
Orange with a rusty shine, the Springbank shimmers in the glass, oily and greasy streaks stick to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter. Discreetly, peaty smoke rises from the glass, mineral earth tones emerge, dried grapes and berries end in a hint of lemon and other citrus fruits. The alcohol is beautifully harmoniously integrated, caramelized sugar and hints of dried liquorice gradually stimulate the salivation. A soft sea breeze comes up, sweetness is slightly salty in the air, the nose is absolutely not overloaded and shows off its filigree and delicate side.
    • Taste
      90 90
Tart grapes and berries flatter the tongue, sweetness flashes, mineral earth tones gently rest on the palate. Suddenly, wood sharpness arises, pepper and salt dance on the tongue and gently massage the lips. Gently flows the second sip through the mouth, minimal peat and smoke, sweet raisins and caramel merge before abruptly pepper and salt in the entire mouth spread. Citrus fruits play with licorice, grapes combine with cane sugar and caramel, and little by little tobacco notes and a hint of leather emerge. Dried wood tones and earthy loam on, the mouthfeel becomes oily and greasy, cedar wood sticks to the palate.
    • Finish
      90 90
The oily and greasy film still sticks to the palate, old leather and dried tobacco leaves stick to the tongue. The aftertaste is rather unspectacular if it were not for this strange but extremely tasty mixture of leather, tobacco, dried berries and dry wood tones.

  15. Palindrome scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

This one needed a great deal of time to mature in the opened bottle. There was a strange mouse corpse note in it. The scent of a dead desicated mouse. Otherwise, it was quite good. I've never noticed this kind of note in a Springbank before or since. The cork was fine. Not cork rot. I gave this score an extra point for uniqueness. There was something uncanny about this bottling. It had a power to it that was very strange but interesting. Not entirely pleasurable but worthwhile to experience. A learning experience in my whisky tasting career/life.

The aroma is dense: tart and sweet berries in abundance, jam from berries, citrus, gum, marmalade, old oak, a little varnish, iodine. Hinted at the smoke? Maybe... Taste is tart, spicy with bitter taste: pepper, a lot of astringent oak, a lot of berry jam, dark honey, notes of chocolate, resin. Aftertaste : astringent-oak, sweetish with bitterness. Conclusion . Well-groomed, delicious Springbank. Tart and dense. Smooth. With a drop of water it seemed that more bitterness. Rating: 87 (n22t22f21b22).

    Nose:-
Nose heating and astringent, shocking and demanding. Once the sensory
accustomed to the hot waves of peat, you will find the bitter chocolate,
raisin and white pepper whirling around. Take time.

    Palate:-
Big and extremely spicy, complex and buttery, wood extract, earthy.
Layers of flavours interchanging, but in harmony. Well married and
    structure.

Finish:- Long and lingering berries fruit, tongue heating with notes of charred wood.

    Not for novice.

Finishing with wine barrels is not always good, but here was really a hammer thing! Really a neck sweeper for my just slightly scratchy throat.
    • Nose
There is visually almost engine oil! And in the nose very differentiated: leather, sugarcane, dried fruit (including dried banana), honey, peppermint malt, also nutty. Some vanilla, cinnamon and other oriental spices; Light smoke is also noticeable, very fine wine gum, everything mixed into a syrupy sweetness.
    • Taste
And the wonderful mixture then runs oil resp. syrupy on the tongue and maintains its exotic variety of ingredients.
    • Finish
Cinnamon, vanilla and wine gum are noticeable when leaving the throat, but also pronounced licorice.

Very aromatic whisky, the wine brings a nice fruity note in the whisky, very tasty
    • Nose
Cherries, light smoke, cassis, coconut, citrus, some alcohol
    • Taste
The alcohol here is stronger than in the nose, including cherries, plums, berries, grapes, light smoke and nut flavor
    • Finish
the nuts turn out to be almonds, the light smoke remains and the beautiful berry nuts, and finally oak comes to the end

A deep and complex Springbank very appreciable: 88
    • Nose
A complex nose on oak, dried fruits and red berries and raspberries. Pineapple and smoke. Few usual exotic fruits from Springbanks.
    • Taste
A palate first closed on oak and leather, plum and dates then it opens on spices and berries. Then come mint and eucalyptus.
    • Finish
Long salty finish on red fruits and eucalyptus.

  30. didi1893 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The taste in my opinion does not fit the great nose. I miss the fruitiness of the nose. After the second sip I feel the taste already pleasant and quite interesting.
An interesting whisky that convinced me thanks to the nose.
    • Nose
Sweet overripe fruits with a light glue note, raisins
    • Taste
Despite the addition of a few drops of water I taste at first only slight bitterness with some sweetness and fruit. Followed by tingling and wooden bitterness, subtle smoke. An indefinable spice for me dominates the taste.
    • Finish
Long and powerful. Again this indefinable spice. Smoke?

    Springbank 12 yo ‘Claret Wood’
    (54,4%, OB 2010, 9360 btl.)

Nose: immediately different. Rich, sirupy with a fresh, fruity side (redcurrant, raspberry, melon) but also a nice musty / coastal side. It even shows hints of coal smoke. Honey and figs. A little bit of mint. Hot sand? Reminiscent of the old Springbanks but in a modernized version. Very good and complex. Mouth: sweet and earthy at the same time. Orange liqueur and herbs. Old leather. A little ginger and pine resin. Again it seems to be a mixture of different styles, but it works very well. It seems to become less expressive when you add water though. Finish: long, slightly peppery with lingering fruits and a salty edge.

This is a big dram, with many layers and without any disturbing wine flavours. One of the best modern Springbank so far. Giving whisky a third maturation after a wine cask is not a bad idea!Recommended. Around € 45.

    Score: 88/100

Very great and complex whisky because I did not expect so.
    • Nose
At the first smell a lot of fruit, overripe plums and dark red cherries with raisins and raspberries. Even oranges find their way through a very nice combination of vanilla, caramel, honey, chocolate and old leather.
    • Taste
Creamy and sweet with ginger. Then the fruits of raspberries, raisins and cherries come in a nice vanilla caramel sauce, garnished with orange peel and a pinch of sea salt. Finally some nutmeg, cinnamon and a hint of smoke.
    • Finish
Long and spicy with bitter oranges, ginger and nutmeg and a bit smoke at the far end.

I hadn't opened this one for a long time as it scores pretty low compared to its current market price, but it appears to be really nice! In my opinion this one is tremendously underrated.
    • Nose
Initially it's mainly the cask that shows off, emerging as dark cherries and prunes. Then caramel fudge, mocha, honey, vanilla, leather and just a little peat smoke. I don't get the oily tropical fruits that I find in most Springbanks.
    • Taste
Cherries, dates, caramel, oak, eucalyptus, leather and a touch of salt. Addition of water doesn't really impact the profile.
    • Finish
More eucalyptus and salt, plus dark chocolate coming up. Still mocha, cherry, prune and oak as well.

Now that is good fun, see. A whisky of
which I had low expectations, that takes me completely by surprise by being so
wonderfully good and complex. One of the best wine finishes I have had in a
    long time!
    • Nose
Ah, the nose is a pleasant surprise! Nicely crisp on berries, especially red ones. After a short while, the
true character of Springbank emerges (think wet jute, mouldy but good). Some honey. Light sourish touch of the wine. Dades. Sea salt. Coconut.
Smoke. Eucalyptus. Caramel. Leather. Vanilla. It goes up and down, up and down. A yo-yo of aromas, all of them
      pleasant.
    • Taste
It is oily, almost creamy, and spicy on the palate. Sweet, absolutely. Winey? No way! Again the red
berries take center stage, but the other, less pronounced tastes, can be found
as well. Very complex and surprisingly good.
    • Finish
The berries remain prominent in the lingering finish, but in the end,
the whisky dies on gently bitter oak and a salty twist. Extraordinary!

Too much cherry notes for me.
    • Nose
Cherry pie.  Vanilla cinnamon sugar.  Fruit cake.  Dates.  Rum and coke.
    • Taste
Rich red cherries.  Oiled leather.  Quince jam.  Brown sugar, then some earthy notes (dirt, sand, and some salt).  Oak tanins.
    • Finish
Red wine and figs.  Medium long, with touches of smoke and brine.
