[May, 2019] I liked the first batch of this "Distiller's Dram" very much (WB id 117290) and scored it 89 points but the next batch I tried (WB id 130617) was significantly weaker at 85 points. So I wonder what this batch L9176 will be all about - and I do this review in a direct head-to-head to a sample from the average-only batch L9016...

...and this new batch again is significantly weaker than L9016, now this dram clearly is of below-average quality. Ooh Diageo, were there really a few good casks only in your huge warehouses so you just could create one above-average initial batch? Or is this an intentional strategy to start with a good one and than get rid of all the sub-standard stuff? Anyhow, it is a shame!
    • Nose
      81 81
The colour of both batches is the same at russetmuscat which is no wonder as they use caramel to adjust it (so forget about the colour, there is no meaning in it). The nose of this batch is even weaker than that of 016 with minor but annoying perfumy notes (lavendar) besides bitter-herbal wooden impressions. Almost no delicate malt aromas or sherry flavours, this nose is really to forget. The longer it breathes the more the anyhow shy aromas vanish (which is good in case of the minor perfumy-lavendar note - but what is a malt without a nose?). I like the nose of 016 much better (but still that is average-only at 85 points, at best).
    • Taste
      83 83
The taste is rather unimpressive with sweet barley-sugary flavours in a shy sherry setting, but it is sulphur-free (at least). In a direct comparison with 016 this taste is more simple with no flavours in it that I will remember by tomorrow morning. What a big disappointment!
    • Finish
      81 81
The initial mouthfeel is almost not creamy anymore, again a significant worsening compared to 016 (not to mention the great first batch from 2018). The finish is of medium length and adds ... nothing except a drying finish which gets unpleasant towards the end. Forget about water - it just flattens an already flat dram further.

Nice sherry whisky, a bit missing body, but overall wonderful

Room temperature when drinking: 14 ℃

    Viewing Eyes: amber

Smell Nose: maltose, condensed milk toast, mango juice, ash, ripe papaya, juicy succulent fruit, sweet orange essence, a little orange fruit lively, a little nutty aroma, the sweetness of faint jam. It smells very transparent, like a special cocktail of fresh fruit.

Taste Palate: high sugar content, longan, sweet and sour mango meat, coconut toast, wood, padan wood, ending with the sweet and frankincense of coconut meat. A good sense of balance, but not many levels.

Finish: medium and short, fructose, smoked ash, oak, honeydew bacon and braised meat with tongue root residue (weak male cloves and white cardamom)

Body: It has a certain consistency, stickiness and robustness. It is full-bodied, succulent and has a chewy texture. No tannin, no bitter bottom, no alcohol stimulation.

    Nose: 84/100

    Palate: 85/100

    Finish: 85/100

    Body: 85/100

    Overall: 85/100

Overall: Fully plump, even swollen. It is reminiscent of glutinous rice with mango coconut milk, and it is more refreshing to sip. There are two versions of 2018/2019 on WB. The score of version 19 is lower than the previous version. I got the second version. Although DB's evaluation of Muhe is Dufftown beast, this one has undoubtedly mutated into Garfield. Teacher Jing said that this IB often has amazing works that people look forward to.
