Beautiful dram. Meadow of flowers, light honey sweetness, significant ripe yellow pears, lovely vanilla, ginger spiciness. Very good balanced all together. Relatively long, citrusy and warmy pleasant aftertaste. 1st fill ex-bourbon cask is recognizable.

    • Nose
      91 91
      Flavor: 91
Aromatic and fruity, baking spices/spices, fresh fruit/fruits, some of them tropical, notes of wood, a little herbaceous, hint of menthol. A little water conjures up clear apple aromas. Great bourbon nose! Very classic and attractive.
    • Taste
      90 90
      Taste: 89-90
fruity and spicy, chocolate, spices, wood/oak notes. A bit tart at first, then slightly sweet. Bitter bittersweet without the addition of water, astringent idea that continues into the finish. With a little water: less tart, with the right amount sweetness is added, remains fruity and spicy, notes of wood are still present but not overpowering. That's how I like it best now.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Dismount: 89-90
Wood/oak, chocolate, spices, hint of cherry stone. Finally, slightly malty and sweet. With a little water it becomes fruitier, pleasantly spicy, slightly sweet-tart-sweet, spices/baking spices, notes of wood and a little chocolate round it off. idea nutty. Delicious!

I found the whisky at a good price and based on the reviews here I immediately bought two bottles blind.
Although I'm a big fan of soft bourbon maturations a la Glen Grant, this old Tomatin doesn't quite meet my expectations here, so I'm selling the second bottle straight away. While this is still a nice and clean whisky, it unfortunately doesn't meet my personal favorite profile.
88 points is still good, but as a fan of such maturations I was hoping for 89-90 points when buying blind. With a lot of time it comes close to 89 points (for lovers of such subtle maturation) if you like that - if you like sherry boards, this will probably be 85-86 here.

Tolerates water and sometimes even gets better with three or four drops to 3cl.
    • Nose
      88.5
The nose is surprisingly mild and very soft. All flavors are very, very subtle - unfortunately a bit too subtle and shy for me personally. I therefore definitely recommend the blender glass for nosing.

Light fruits, green apples, malty lemon cake, some light caramel, strawberries and an overall harmonious balance.
I can't find any wrong notes here. So there really isn't much to complain about, but personally I prefer the juicy and voluminous bourbon aging with an oily creaminess. Unfortunately, despite the 46% and 21 years, the one here doesn't offer enough for me, although there are definitely approaches.

Only after 20 minutes does a slightly bitter note of wood come into the nose, which is still pleasant for the 21-year-old.
      It gets sweeter with water.
    • Taste
      88.5
A clear note of wood can be found on entry, which is pleasant and not annoying, but is surprising compared to the nose. Then comes a sweet fruitiness of light fruits (apple, kiwi, mirabelle plum) and just a little vanilla, but also strawberries again.
    • Finish
The finish and mouthfeel are good but not outstanding - sufficiently oily due to a clean distillate and the bitter note is less present on the finish than on the palate.

A solid dram, although I don't regret passing the opportunity to buy this bottle at a discount price. That sour edge, a feature I encounter more often with Tomatin, brings it down a bit for me.
    • Nose
      86 86
Green fruits like mango peel, greengages and kiwi combine with f caramel and a dusty 'old' quality. Requires a lot of effort though, since the nose is relatively shy.
    • Taste
      88 88
It's fruity (green apples, citrus fruits and pineapple) with a sour edge (spoiled yoghurt?). On the background buttery white chocolate, sage and cardamom add to more depth.
    • Finish
      87 87
Sweet tropical fruits and apples now, followed by some caramel and cloves. Unfortunately, the sour note also lingers on the back.

I got this one on sale for 89 Euro. What can I say, a daylight robbery! An absolutely brilliant bourbon matured, well aged, whisky. The malty character of Tomatin shines through despite the higher age! This was by far not my first Tomatin, but definitely not the last one. I have stashed myself another 2 bottles of this liquid gold...

Tomatin 21 delivers the expected. 21 year old bourbon cask. Vanilla, caramel, apple, pear, behind it the barrel pushes a little, spice gives a nice balance, a little hazelnut chocolate, but in bittersweet.
In the finish, first the oak spice in front, then the gentle notes take over again.
Small deductions in the nosing, here the malt seems a bit closed.

Conclusion: The distillery did everything right, a really great whisky, which can also score with its contrast of nose and taste, plus the velvety, buttery finish - brilliant. If you want to criticize something, then maybe the somewhat strong influence of wood, but only when nosing, and maybe the lack of strength. But that is whining at a very high level. And it is also dangerously good to sip away.

    Nose 88
sweet honey, fruity, some oak - overall very pleasant.

    Taste 90
Incredibly smooth, very soft, but in a good way.
Some whiskies are "boring smooth" with lower ABVs.
There is enough fruitiness and even some spice left to keep it interesting.
For first-fill Ex-Bourbon there ist after 21 years also no overwhelming oak, at least I can´t detect it, it rather nicely complements the flavour.

    89
The finish is not overly strong, but again extremely smooth and long lasting.
There are no intensive flavors I can pick out other than maybe a butter-like feeling others have pointed out, but overall it´s again very satisfying.

    Nose (89):
Light-fruity dried fruit mix, vanilla, desiccated coconut, pleasantly spicy oak, light honey (I don't know Manuka honey), with its 46%, as expected, no alcoholic notes. Very pleasant.

    Taste (89):
Similar to the aromas in the nose, not quite as sweet as expected, rather spicy and mild oak notes, not bitter, not alcoholic, slightly creamy. If you want to make the description a bit more readable, a butter croissant with honey might also be appropriate. 

    Departure (87):
Subtle fruity and spicy, medium to long finish, pleasantly integrated alcohol.

I am missing a bit of the fruity bitterness that accompanies it, similar to the white skin of oranges / lemons to really round it off for me. Nevertheless, overall a good to very good 1st-fill ex-bourbon bottling, 21 years for about 100 € makes a good PLV for me.

For me, the nose is clearly the highlight of this bottling. At first very cautious, after a certain time it offers a real spectacle with lots of tropical notes. The relatively dry palate afterwards caused a certain disillusionment for me.
    • Nose

At first quite cautious, but then a very nice mineral-tropical bourbon nose. Takes time and some warmth. Coconut, brine water, vanilla, lavender honey, mango, passion fruit, shortbread biscuits, apricots, honeydew melon, wine gum (exotic fruit), tender oak.
    • Taste
      86 86
Nice and strong, slightly oily and less sweet than the nose suggested. Caramel, coconut, apricots, milk chocolate, passion fruit, blood oranges, tannins.

A beautiful malt from a bourbon barrel. In addition to the beautiful bourbon notes, it also has a certain liveliness in it. But this never seems immature or uncomfortable. For € 100 that I paid, you can't really complain about that.
    • Nose
Coconut and pineapple. Also tangerine. Light honey. Lemon peel. Butter toast with orange jam. Tree sap and maybe resin. But also dry wood. If necessary, removes some chamomile.
    • Taste
Honey again. Malt sweetness. Unripe honeydew melon. White grape juice. The citrus fruits are a bit more present and juicy but also more acidic. Lemon effervescent sticks. Nice tingling. Pleasant wood flavor. A bit of white pepper.
    • Finish
The citrus fruits slowly fade away. But the acid still remains. Add a little grapefruit. Wood standing in the sap.

    (Notes from a blind tasting)

Nicely balanced malt, fruity, with a subtle built-in oak note, and everything in exactly the right drinking strength.
    • Nose
      87 87
Slightly alcoholic, fruity with a rather tropical touch: apricot, pineapple, mango. Time is good, the fruity elements continue to emerge, ripe apples are added. Behind it dry sawdust.
    • Taste
      89 89
The impressions from the nose continue, really diverse and fruity, combined with fine oak spice.
    • Finish

A great tomato that is now unfortunately starting to become scarce and therefore more expensive. Very round and balanced. Nice to enjoy. Mmm. This is a very nice whisky matured in a bourbon barrel. I like the combination of pineapple cake, honey sweetness, vanilla and the white pepper in the taste right up to the finish. So far I only had the Legacy as an original bottling in the glass and was therefore a bit skeptical. However, this 21y made me much more curious about the other bottlings of Tomatin. The price for the whisky is currently between € 107 and € 165. A buy recommendation from me, if you can get it for the lower range of the price segment.
    • Nose
      89 89
As is to be expected with the barrel selection with 1st-fill bourbon barrels, the Tomatin has an appetizing yellow and numerous streaks in the glass. First impression - very nice soft classic bourbon barrel nose. Sweet tropical fruit nose, clearly pineapple. Pineapple cake with vanilla sauce. With a few minutes of rest, the typical juicy, green apples appear. In the background, gentle floral notes circle around the whole time. A certain spiciness from the oak can also be noticed. Overall, however, very harmonious and balanced. The longer the malt stays in the glass, the more beautiful the nose becomes, the aromas grow and stand out from each other.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very creamy, creamy mouthfeel. Immediately a very nice sweetness, combined with the pineapple cake note already present in the nose. This is followed by a slight sharpness that is reminiscent of white pepper and combines with the sweet-fruity aromas. The second sip adds a good amount of vanilla to the flavor mix.
    • Finish
      87 87
The white pepper and the sweet pineapple also accompany the finish. Only later is this complemented by a subtle bitter taste nuance. It gets a little dry - slightly astringent - in the mouth. All in all, the finish is rather medium (short) long.

I'm surprised by how much I like this. Despite the dilution to 46%, it has the exact right level of intensity.
    • Nose
      89 89
Yup, that's first-fill bourbon alright, oozing nectar-like sweetness and lush tropical fruits, super honeyed and creamy. Yet there are enough bitters and sour notes to balance everything out.
It's weird: I pretty much detest 1st fill ex-bc at younger ages, but with enough maturation time, it can really become a treat - and that's the case here. Time has tampered the exuberance and syrupy, saccharine character that younger malts can display in this cask type, plus the fruitiness of Tomatin (which only really comes into its own after two decades) meshes nicely with the banana-and-tangerine aromas that 1st fill ex-bourbon wood contributes in spades. Normally I prefer ex-bc malts as an aperitif, but this would also do nicely as an after-dinner whisky. Succulent and sweet, with a soft and opulent texture like velvet.
    • Taste
      89 89
Mild attack with a nicely creamy mouthfeel. A late starter, but once it gets going, all the goodness that the nose promised is repeated on the palate. Tutti frutti, creamy custard, sweet vanilla... Plus a good dose of spice at the end to pep things up. Flawless decades-long ex-bourbon maturation that hits all the sweet spots.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still quite a few soft exotic fruit notes and a LOT of sweetness, but it's kept in check by some elegantly tart, spicy oak.

I came across this bottle by chance through a video from Tomek. 21er Bourbon matured that's exactly my thing. Just ordered a nice, large sample and off you go. Thanks to the Tomek.
    • Nose
Creamy vanilla with a bright meadow of flowers. In the background the finest distillery notes. Nice balance between barrel and spirit. Both harmonize wonderfully. Striking floral with creamy citrus sugar notes. Very fine bourbon nose, ... like 88.
    • Taste
The first thought from my childhood was peasant bread sprinkled with white sugar and lemon juice on top. Immediately afterwards full and creamy transition to the oak. Tanine dance on the tongue. In the transition there is a peppercorn that is suddenly bitten through and now there is a certain Cilly effect. Unfortunately, that remains dominant until the finish.
    • Finish
In the middle, it dries pepper-hot and very quickly in and dominates, but only briefly, the finish. Not necessarily mine, but not annoyingly bad. Here I am now looking at the PLV! And that fits really well. Handcrafted 21er Bourbon Dram for about 100 €. That's a good offer. Made fair. Thanks to Tomatin. That's how it is done!

with water: no, no water, it is so very well balanced, it could have tolerated 2-3% more. If you still try it with a little water, the wood is emphasized even more in the nose and there are more floral notes, in the mouth and in the taste it flattens out. So leave the water out
