Whisky Reviews for Tomatin 21-year-old

with water: no, no water, it is so very well balanced, it could have tolerated 2-3% more. If you still try it with a little water, the wood is emphasized even more in the nose and there are more floral notes, in the mouth and in the taste it flattens out. So leave the water out

Conclusion: The distillery did everything right, a really great whisky, which can also score with its contrast of nose and taste, plus the velvety, buttery finish - brilliant. If you want to criticize something, then maybe the somewhat strong influence of wood, but only when nosing, and maybe the lack of strength. But that is whining at a very high level. And it is also dangerously good to sip away.
    • Nose
      88 88
Intense honey sweetness, a good portion of oak shavings, tropical fruits (passion fruit), coconut cream, vanilla, apples and fresh apricot peel, the alcohol is well integrated, overall very well balanced
    • Taste
      90 90
very soft and creamy, mouth filling, lots of light fruits and a little butter, the wood is more restrained here than in the nose and supports the malt with light spicy notes
    • Finish
      90 90
medium to long, very soft, balanced, again the butter association, blossom honey, fruity, vanilla and only very subtle wood notes, some ginger on the back, but without any spiciness and linden blossom honey

Beautiful to look at and very tasty malt with full broadsides of bright, ripe fruits from the nose to the finish. I like it better with every sip and is a very fair offer for a 21-year-old in a beautiful bottle + valuable packaging for the price of € 99.90 (as of June 2020). In addition, a nice drinking strength of 46% - what more could you want? Clear purchase recommendation.

Stunningly sweet, fruity, well-rounded honeydew drop. Not utterly complex, but very tasty and well worth the money.

A wonderful bourbon barrel whisky, ripe, buttery, amazingly woody and spicy, dangerously tasty - ideal for the summer evening on the terrace!

Mmm. This is a very nice whisky matured in a bourbon barrel. I like the combination of pineapple cake, honey sweetness, vanilla and the white pepper in the taste right up to the finish. So far I only had the Legacy as an original bottling in the glass and was therefore a bit skeptical. However, this 21y made me much more curious about the other bottlings of Tomatin. The price for the whisky is currently between € 107 and € 165. A buy recommendation from me, if you can get it for the lower range of the price segment.

As is to be expected with the barrel selection with 1st-fill bourbon barrels, the Tomatin has an appetizing yellow and numerous streaks in the glass. First impression - very nice soft classic bourbon barrel nose. Sweet tropical fruit nose, clearly pineapple. Pineapple cake with vanilla sauce. With a few minutes of rest, the typical juicy, green apples appear. In the background, gentle floral notes circle around the whole time. A certain spiciness from the oak can also be noticed. Overall, however, very harmonious and balanced. The longer the malt stays in the glass, the more beautiful the nose becomes, the aromas grow and stand out from each other.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very creamy, creamy mouthfeel. Immediately a very nice sweetness, combined with the pineapple cake note already present in the nose. This is followed by a slight sharpness that is reminiscent of white pepper and combines with the sweet-fruity aromas. The second sip adds a good amount of vanilla to the flavor mix.
    • Finish
      87 87
The white pepper and the sweet pineapple also accompany the finish. Only later is this complemented by a subtle bitter taste nuance. It gets a little dry - slightly astringent - in the mouth. All in all, the finish is rather medium (short) long.

I'm surprised by how much I like this. Despite the dilution to 46%, it has the exact right level of intensity.

Yup, that's first-fill bourbon alright, oozing nectar-like sweetness and lush tropical fruits, super honeyed and creamy. Yet there are enough bitters and sour notes to balance everything out.
It's weird: I pretty much detest 1st fill ex-bc at younger ages, but with enough maturation time, it can really become a treat - and that's the case here. Time has tampered the exuberance and syrupy, saccharine character that younger malts can display in this cask type, plus the fruitiness of Tomatin (which only really comes into its own after two decades) meshes nicely with the banana-and-tangerine aromas that 1st fill ex-bourbon wood contributes in spades. Normally I prefer ex-bc malts as an aperitif, but this would also do nicely as an after-dinner whisky. Succulent and sweet, with a soft and opulent texture like velvet.
    • Taste
      89 89
Mild attack with a nicely creamy mouthfeel. A late starter, but once it gets going, all the goodness that the nose promised is repeated on the palate. Tutti frutti, creamy custard, sweet vanilla... Plus a good dose of spice at the end to pep things up. Flawless decades-long ex-bourbon maturation that hits all the sweet spots.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still quite a few soft exotic fruit notes and a LOT of sweetness, but it's kept in check by some elegantly tart, spicy oak.

I came across this bottle by chance through a video from Tomek. 21er Bourbon matured that's exactly my thing. Just ordered a nice, large sample and off you go. Thanks to the Tomek.
    • Nose
      88 88
Creamy vanilla with a bright meadow of flowers. In the background the finest distillery notes. Nice balance between barrel and spirit. Both harmonize wonderfully. Striking floral with creamy citrus sugar notes. Very fine bourbon nose, ... like 88.
    • Taste
      87 87
The first thought from my childhood was peasant bread sprinkled with white sugar and lemon juice. Then immediately full and creamy transition to the oak. Tanine dance on the tongue. In the transition there is a peppercorn that is suddenly bitten through and now there is a certain Cilly effect. Unfortunately, this remains dominant until the finish.
    • Finish
      85 85
In the medium-long term, it dries hot and pepper very quickly and dominates the finish, but only briefly. Not necessarily mine, but not annoyingly bad. Here I am looking at the PLV now! And that fits really well. Handcrafted 21er Bourbon Dram for around 100 €. That's a good offer. Made fair. Thanks to Tomatin. That's how it goes!
