    Whisky4all tasting April 2022. 1st Cotswold.
    Gold-coloured, ~ 60 euros.
Fairly young whisky, not quite successful, dark in taste, too much woodspice in the aftertaste.

Was expecting a peated whisky but I don't think I could detect smoke, so it drags down my rating quite a bit.
    • Nose
      let citrus
    • Taste
      Feel almost only sweet notes
    • Finish
      Again only sweet notes

Cotswolds is an interesting distillery, but unfortunately even they can't make a peated cask work so I would like the end result. The result here is a mix of peated islay aromas with the fruity and light distillate of Cotswolds, but the cask runs the spirit over, leaving it rough and raw.

A distillery rep recommended it without water. Understandable, since adding a bit of water collapses the cask influence. You can taste the distillate better, but water makes everything kind of soggy and lackluster.
    • Nose
Easy to tell where the casks came from. The first nosing is like someone had diluted Laphroaig to 20-30%. Faintly hay-ish, faintly farmy, but mostly woodsmoked and medicinal.
    • Taste
Laphroaig lite, with fruity touches. Feels like it falls in some uncanny valley between unpeated and peated whisky, where I don't exactly fancy spending an evening. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't taste bad, but if there is to be peat in a dram, I prefer peat that is a part of the distillate and has matured along with the rest of the make.
    • Finish
Long, but mostly on the cask. Monotone.

Unbalanced and still decent. I really enjoyed the nose where peat doesn't dominate, but still has an interesting presence.

I quite like a bit of bite to my whiskies, but this is a bit too hot too soon. There are some nice flavours afterwards, but the heat makes it difficult, as its arrival is early and powerful enough to obscure what else is going on during those first sips.

The tail is fine and as long as it needs to be. The minerality and ash cut some of the sweetness and restore some semblance of equilibrium, leaving me in a good place.

alcohol burn, waxy, yellow stone-fruits, white cherry, barley. Very light peat that's manages to be sweetly-floral and meatily-savoury at the same time.
    • Taste
      73 73
Dense honeysuckle fumes before it gets almost immediately hot in the back of the throat, as black pepper dominates. That meaty peat is also very forward and no longer floral. Typically full Cotswolds mouthfeel and chew. The yellow fruits are back, but stewed and take on a citric but sweet lemon sherbets edge.
    • Finish
      76 76
Warm, flinty but still effervescent San Pellegrino, fresh ginger, fleeting liquorice and some cold charcoal ash.
