The fruity, sour aromas in the smell surprised me, it smelled different than the other representatives of Glenfarclas' core range. Spicy and oak predominate in the taste. The fruit content recedes more into the background. The 12 year old definitely has character. Certainly suitable for beginners. A passable evening companion on a night out with friends.
    • Nose
      85 85
The whisky starts out surprisingly acidic and fruity the first time you sniff it. The orange note that is so typical for me in Glenfarclas Malts is not present at all at the beginning. Instead, sweet and sour lemon candies, gooseberries and physalis. A few roasted hazelnuts are also in an oak bowl. Over time, however, strawberries, raspberries and a hint of cinnamon and vanilla show up - the sherry cask aging is now more evident.
The alcohol is well integrated and the 43% ensure a proper transport of the aromas to the nose.
    • Taste
      85 85
A soft, velvety mouthfeel. It starts off quite spicy with a good amount of nutmeg and cinnamon. Strong and warming. The light yet present sweetness, reminiscent of blossom honey, only briefly asserts itself against the spiciness. The sour lemon and gooseberry aromas are more present as fruit. However, the typical sherry fruits are missing in the taste.
    • Finish
      83 83
Dark chocolate and hazelnuts appear at the beginning of the thoroughly warming finale. The oak is clear and stays present for a little longer.

Very grainy, but all in all quite pleasant. 65 points
    • Nose
Light fruits - apples and physalis. In addition, an intense grain note. Malt. A delicate vanilla. The alcohol tickles my nose a bit.
    • Taste
Malty, a subtle vanilla, a little floury apple. A hint of fresh wood in the aftertaste.
    • Finish
      Medium length, grainy.

  9. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Cherry cream. Aged blackberries. We are in the forest, there is a certain humidity, it is leafy, but there are also conifers, it is slightly minty, hazelnuts, chestnuts, resin, tree bark, light honey, ferns, heather, loose earth. Currants and other berries. In the mouth, spices, it's quite good, fruit cake, paprika, cardamom, nutmeg. Not bad finish, on charcoal, dry wood, it's a bit rough but quite long. A touch of candied ginger. Fir thorns.

Glenfarclas 12 Year Old, 43%. 50ml pour from the top of a newly opened bottle at the Minerva Inn Plymouth, Sep 2018. Short review in company of Teresa. Very easy going whisky, a creamy easy going malt. Just really easy - simple oaky. Plain but serviceable. 3.3/79

Bang 4 the buck 1l bottle. Batches vary, some are visibly darker with more sherry influence. Quality-wise on the level of Farclas 18 for cheaper money. Recommended, good bottle to bring to weddings, not as a gift but for interested folk to kill during festivities.

  17. JeJoost scored this whisky 84 points Member Senior

Reasonably priced (~€30,- for a litre bottle where I'm from), and still a respectable dram. Don't expect your typical sherry notes in this one. All in all a good beginner whisky if you want to explore if you ask me!
    • Nose
      86 86
Quite green at first. Green apples, gooseberries, unripe fruit, green and red grapes both make an appearance. Then plums and dried red fruits in cream and a noticeable, bitter oak note. Water brings out a big vanilla/toffee note. Really liking the nose on this one!
    • Taste
      83 83
The initial taste is syrupy sweet, with honey and vanilla. Then a savoury malty note with hints of fruit, mostly green (like the nose). Not what one would expect from a typical sherried whisky. Improves with water for my taste. Citrus fruits and gummy bears come to mind now.
    • Finish
      83 83
Pleasantly spicy, with green apple, orange and lemon. Medium in length and quite dry.

  18. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 83 points Super Administrator

Family-owned distillery, direct-fired stills and this unmistakable sherry-infused style - what's not to like about Glenfarclas? Light, sweet and fruity, the aroma kicks off with oranges, apricots and unripe banana, followed by shortbread, allspice and vegetal notes. The arrival is zesty, sparkling and reminiscent of Fanta. Water tames the initial roughness of the spirit, revealing dried fruits, pineapple and menthol. Dark chocolate, peppery spices and gummy bears fade in the medium finish. It's still a bargain for a 12-year-old, although not as robust as it used to be.

This is a well made dram. The length of engagement is a testament to that. It has a light-medium mouthfeel and similar tears from the bead-line. The nose starts off with fino sherry influence and finishes with olorosso influence. The palate is the opposite. Many of the negative tastes and smells that put people off this whisky are often the fino sherry ones. There seems to be an expectation that Glenfarclas's well-known sherry cask policy will mean sweet, rich, and fruity. Those are there, but so are the tart, green, tannic white-wine notes from the fino. If the latter smells and tastes appeal to you, you'll like this one. If not, maybe go for the 15 or 25 year old expressions.
    • Nose
Light malt and freshly peeled oranges and lemon peel, candied orange peels with clove, some fino sherry (dry white-wine), mild oak and allspice, a faint mentholated cherry spirit burn, intermingling of slightly solvent mostly barely ripe Anjou pears and raisins and dried cranberries, chocolate covered cherry cordials, and every so often a whiff of pancakes and syrup.
    • Taste
A rush of olorosso sweet red fruits, baking spices and oak, candied orange peel and liquorice allsorts, a touch of wood char, slightly mentholated cherry syrup, mixed crisp fruits (fuji apples, plums, red and white grapes) and bitter chocolate, and a touch of dried leaves.
    • Finish
A green herbal note (parsley or oregano), faint espresso, and a slow soft fade of wine tannins, cinnamon and clove, and faint walnut oil.

    • Nose
malty with the typical gf fruit profile, dominated by cooked cherries. but the fruits are nicely integrated and this is not always the case with the core range gfs.
after a few minutes in the glass the cooked cherries are overtaken by oranges. god bless them cause I hate cooked cherries.
    • Taste
oranges again and some pastry, mild oak and liquorice. very mild and easy to drink. of course not a complex palate.
    • Finish
short to medium with a little ginger

On the nose, spices, fruits, wood and a fine sherry!
On the palate, vanilla, honey, spices, soft orange fruits, freshly baked wood!
In the finish, average on same aromas
A standard too quickly forgotten, as usual, but which keeps a unique character!

Yes! full sherry maturation. That honey makes it very accessable, but it still has a lot character (spicy, yeast, fermented, herbs, dry oak) which prevent it from being boring for anyone, surprisingly dense sherry notes for just 12 years.

To me, this is one of the best 12yo Sherry Malts on the market (since Macallan or Glendronach Original doesn't convince me at this moment).

There is nothing not to like.

For a rainy evening in early autumn.
    • Nose
Soft, juicy fruits over a haze of sherry. Staves of a freshly emptied oak barrel sprinkled with a pinch of spices. The delicate touch of a long-blown perfume. A few mashed, dark berries garnish with a few crumbs of malt. Water offers sherry, oak and a mild sweetness. Here, too, a few crushed berries, but over which a hint of smoke floats. Removes a hunch of dried orange peel.
    • Taste
At first relatively mild. Soft and clear. Then spicy (crisp?) Oak rushes in with a hint of smoke, a little sweet sherry and some herbs. And with some water? Chilli flakes, a small bubbly tingling (no, I have not caught the wrong water!), Very spicy oak notes, some cinnamon.
    • Finish
Sweet with a little sherry. In addition a small chili fire burns and withered spice wraps around the tongue. The finish under "water influence" converts the chili into a certain cinnamon sharpness. Furthermore, cloves, oak dust, the smallest notes of hard, harsh caramel, drying very slightly.

good introduction to get to know the Glenfarclascharakter with often strong wood influence. Acts on the palate much older than in the nose which is rather fresh-fruity and young.
    • Nose
Golden color, slightly alcoholic, Obstler, very fresh, sherry is there but dominate bright fruits, honeydew melon, apples, grapes, oranges, with vanilla and little caramel, tasty, not overwhelming complex, he looks quite young
    • Taste

Nice but not special. If found it an average experience. The nose has a little sour note that I did not find very pleasant.

The Arrival is ok, but I could not detect much in the development.

The 105 cask is more value for your buck, but that's my opinion.

This is a gritty one. I was actually disappointed at first. Needs time in the bottle to mellow out and rid itself of a few rough edges. Takes water well.

  90. Tommyknocker scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

a very nice, simple Einsteigermalt, just like you want a classic Speysider, unfortunately a bit flat on the palate and the finish.
    • Nose
a round, fruity malty, slightly green overall picture. The fruit even goes a little towards the flower. Distant hints of hickory wood from the smoker. Very delicious!
    • Taste

too pungent and bit monotonic. Lacks of balance. I like Glenfarclas 10 more. Overall, least interesting on their range from 10 to 40 yo. Drinkable, but not special.
    • Nose
Caramelized sugar emerges strongly with some dried figs and vanilla. Oily wood, nut butter.
    • Taste
Oily vanilla with lots of nuts - almonds, peanuts. Cinnamon and vanilla goes strong. Lots of sherry notes.
    • Finish
Vanilla goes to caramelized sugar with some spice. Sugar is too strong here.

Does not take water well for the nose. In the taste it does. Glenfarclas is a recommendation for beginner and connoiseur.
    • Nose
No water: initially sweet of fresh fruit and heather. Malty undertones. Spicey overlay.
With water: less sweet, less spicey. Sawmill.
    • Taste
Rich arrival. Warm sweet development. All on the tongue.

Initial taste: Sweet, a fade hint of spices and a little oak around the corner

Body: Light and asking for more

    • Nose
Sherry, sherry and even more sherry. Appears sweet and creamy.
    • Taste
Initially sweet!! Starts very soft. It takes a little while before a rich spiciness kicks in. Quite some oak now. And of course lots of sherry. spicy, oak, takes a while then power
    • Finish
Decent finish, medium long. Malt and nuts. Again lots of sherry, pretty sweet. A little dry oak and then quite some malt again.

Nice sherried whisky. The casks seems to be not very active.

Nice nose bit cherry, walnut cake, ripe fruit,  all light in nature, likes to open up with time.

The initial taste isn't much spirity, clean,  medium complex arrival, nice sweet development, cherry, ripe summer fruit, passion fruit, salted caramels, spices, nutty character... again the cherry isn't dominant to either nose or the palate.

The finish is medium long and spicy.

You can get it for the right price on offer in supermarkets sometimes and that is good value for money 43% with natural colour. Otherwise there's better whisky out there for asking price. ( around 38 £ in UK )

A very docile, run of the mill Glenfarclas. Good introduction to the
    style of the distillery.
    • Nose
Soft and very sherried nose full of fruits. Dried apricots next to fresh
pastry with marshmallows. Really sweet. Soft spices. Evolves towards quite a
bit of caramel. Werthers Originals. Mildly floral as well. After ten minutes it
      turns into candied sugar.
    • Taste
Rather light body with just a little bit of spice. Tannins, yes.
Liquorice. Ginger too. Then some Turkish Delight, candied oranges and fresh
      figs. Hints of nuts.
    • Finish
Medium length finish that is drying towards the end.

An excellent introduction to the distillery style. Glenfarclas means Glen of the Green Grassland, and the freshness on the nose reminds me of grassland in spring. So, for me, this is the `farclas` aroma. In 2006 this was named the `Best Sherried Whisky` in the Single Malt World Cup. More recently Glenfarclas 12 Years Old won Gold at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival in 2007 and again in 2008.

  107. drkrylov scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Lots of sherry and fruit in this, Glenfarclas 12 was originally bottled for export and travel retail markets. In 2006, it was named the "Best Sherried Whisky" in the Single Malt World Cup, and in 2007 and 2008 it won Gold at the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival.

Nothing too special, still it's not a bad option for an everyday dram maybe.
    • Nose
Confectionery, sweet ripe fruit, dried apricots, fresh wood, flaky pastry, marshmallow, powdered sugar.
    • Taste
Moderately hot, balanced, soft texture. Tangerines, candied fruit, ginger, honey, figs, cashew.
    • Finish
Bitter citrus. Rind of orange, mandarin orange peel, grapefruit, peanuts, beeswax, caramel.

Tried this at the Whisky Live Shanghai 2012:

Nice vatting of 2/3 sherry and 1/3 plain oak where the sherry has the upper hand.
