Appearance: Medium golden-amber, oily. Slightly darker than the 12 y.o. but not hugely dark, considering the length of time spent in sherry casks.
Nose: Sherry, caramel, vanilla, honey, bit of cherry, cinnamon spice. Nicely mellowed, but still a bit boozy. Just a touch smoky.
Palate: Slick, woody oak, dark fruits, caramel, honey, pepper, cinnamon. Chewy malt. Cookies. Sherry.
Finish: Peppery and spicy, cookies, dark fruits. Hotter than I I would like.
With Water: Toasty malt becomes bigger, less spice and heat in the nose. Flavor mellowed but also dulled a bit.
Overall: Mellower and richer than the 12, and much better. Not huge, really, but very well integrated and balanced and overall quite lovely. Amazing value for a 17 y.o. Scotch.
