    No matter in which barrel combination it comes in the bottle, whether with a higher sherry barrel content, 50/50 sherry and bourbon or, like this batch, with 65% bourbon barrel and 35% sherry barrel - the first smell, the first contact of the nose with the " Fluidum “from the glass is a coming home: subliminally, the 12CS character is always there, always fresh and mineral with a unique, non-copyable mixture of fruit, salt, minerality and spice.
    Batch 20 is now more spicy and dirty. Panta rhei, never the same river - that's how it has to be.

    Brief comparison with batch 19:
    Two batches of the 12 CS each year - and at the start of the new batch I usually have one last dram in the bottle of the previous batch, so that I can make a quick comparison.
    Batch 19 was one of the best batches of the past years in my opinion. Batch 19 is softer and smoother on the nose, Batch 20 again has more mineral notes, is more spicy and dirty.
    Batch 19 looks creamier and fuller, more fruity on the tongue. Batch 20, on the other hand, scores with more "dirtiness" and spice, is angular and angular.
    Batch 19 has something longer in the finish than there is in Batch 20. While Batch 20 dries quickly, Batch 19 keeps the aromas longer and stores them on the tongue.
    As always, there are nuances that distinguish the batches. Neither is like the other. But Batch 19 still stands out a little ...
    • Nose

      Absolutely classic nose with direct mineral and salty notes, mixed with apricot jam, peach slices, pieces of orange. Looks fresh like its predecessors in the first impression, but also transports this subtle heaviness, this loamy, moist forest floor, the “dirty” from the start. Pleasantly rough and angular. Marzipan, butterscotch, toffee. Despite the lower proportion of sherry barrels in the batch again with some notes from the sherry barrels such as dried figs, leather, pipe tobacco.
    • Taste

      Pleasantly strong, oily taste with chocolate, espresso beans and raisins. Mineral, loamy, earthy. Salt and pepper, marjoram, savory. Warmed up, chugging ship aggregate. The sherry barrel aromas are less prominent on the tongue than on the nose, here dried apricots and peaches predominate on the fruit side. In addition dry wood wort, a trace of smoke, spices that burn again and again. Soft liquorice.

      Medium. Becomes increasingly dry, but keeps its mineral notes, gets even a bit dirtier over time. Chocolate, toffee, warm caramel. Would have liked to stay longer.

    This whisky just never ceases to amaze me. If there is one whisky I would always recommend to any enthousiast whisky drinker who is looking for something else, I'd recommend the Springbank 12 CS. There's so much to discover. Balance
    and complexity is amazing, every single batch. And I've never failed to pick this distillery out at blind tastings. I think it's amazing how Springbank is able to always bring forward their distinct character. This one has caramel/toffee, black pepper, smoked fish, leather, dirty/oily car garage, lavender, cloves and cinnamon. This is so complex you'l discover something new in your glass every few minutes. Savour it for at least an hour.

    SB12 is very differant to SB10 which has much more active bourbon barrel influence. Surprisingly the 12 actually seems younger than the 10 and untamed / quite aggressive even with water. Definitely complex, it changes as the level goes down in the glass.

    No smoke, no lemon sherbet, no fresh ground coffee finish (I do wish reviewers would actually review instead of copy & paste the distiller's marketing guff).

    82 seems fair. I will update as the bottle goes down - but in all honesty this bottle is over-rated
    and wont be buying another soon.

      Malty, good bourbon cask influence, menthol. Promising.
    • Taste

      Oats + golden syrup (porridge?) . Strong taste of bonfire toffee. Can take a lot of water but still it catches in your throat. Somehow feral and untamed.
    • Finish

      Gunpowder / fireworks - definitely somethig burnt or sulphur. But no smoke.

    Quick hit review.

    You can't go wrong with Springbank 12, it is as simple as that. Lovely, sherry-driven nose. Dried fruits, earthy peat smoke and citrus zest, then tobacco, ginger and cloves. Mouth-watering arrival, sweet and spicy, followed by mineral peatiness. It doesn't lack the funky notes, while juicy oranges, herbs and brine add to the complexity. Gentle oak spices, sage and re-emerging fruits sparkle in the prolonged finish. A wonderful malt!

    Bright, dirty and energetic Springbank, it's not so easy to immediately figure out what's what, but it plays interesting and tasty

      Assertive and dirty, it’s hard to tell right away what’s there. Lacquer with oranges, dried fruits covered with salt, salted caramel, sweet smoke, perfumery, mint with menthol, a little later, butter cream, a cow farm, when it calms down in a glass, bright citruses with salt and iodine remain
    • Taste

      slightly tanned orange, spices, wet wood, iodine, sweet smoke, dark chocolate, singed wool and damp earth
    • Finish
      88 88
      spices, lemon zest sprinkled with salt, wood, grapefruit

    Very nice spring bench. In my view, always worth a dram. Barrel strength, age and around 65 €. Actually you don't do anything wrong.

      Great nose. Freshly glazed wooden board. A slight touch of solvent comes through. Strangely, this doesn't bother at all. It makes the whole thing rather interesting. A slight grain note lies in the background. I noticed smoke quite strongly at the beginning, but is gone within 10 minutes. The sherry casks beat through most of all with just about 1/3 il batch with all the flavors that are typical for it. Nutty and dried fruit. Delicious!

      Smoke is there. In addition to the tingling and spicy note, a strong sweetness appears. Here now the bourbon barrels dominate but deposited by the fruitiness from the nose, which probably comes from the sherry barrels.
    • Finish

      The finish is a bit weak and one-dimensional. The nutty and the sweet remains. The smoke leaves an "ash layer" on the palate.

    Tasting Notes by SPRINGBANK:

    Nose: Fresh floral notes, white and green wine gums, wood chippings, candied ginger and black liquorice.

    Palate: Initially rich & malty; spiced biscuit and salted caramel shortcake with a beautiful oily and chewy mouthfeel. Salted pretzels, Iberico ham and classic Springbank smoke follow.

    Finish: The smoke continues alongside sea salt dark chocolate, freshly ground coffee and lemon sherbet

      Oh, it's watery. Sugar molasses, wild berries, baking paper, metal. Slight indefinable smoke.

      Quite weak with molasses, baking paper, very light smoke.

      Conclusion: That was nothing. No comparison to batches 16 and 18. (I also found batch 17 bad.)

    sweet and salty caramel in the forest grass, barely crushed by the dirty leather boots of a boatswain with a tube in yellow teeth ... the aroma is a little better in taste, the aftertaste is average 22.5-22-21.5-22

    dirty for me is not merely sulfur. there are other lovely aspects to a "dirty" springer. this one does have the sulfur thing going on somewhat. the distillery will say, no, no sulfur, impossible, but there can be sensory impressions that conjure up sulfur, from time to time. i would say this release had a bad cask in there somewhere, a bit grotty in a not so good way. otherwise, the other casks are just stellar and spot-on majestic.
