- Thank you, Google:
STR is a new acronym in whisky maturation and refers to 'Shaved, Toasted and Recharred' red wine casks. Before maturation has taken place, these red wine casks have quite literally been shaved, toasted and recharred redefining them as somewhere between virgin oak and red wine casks.
Not much to add, other than this is a pretty sweet Kilchoman nose. Young, potent, sweet, super smoky.
A bit too sweet for my taste, but this is pretty good quality. Typical Kilchoman. Then again, every Kilchoman is typical Kilchoman since its distillate is super potent.
Kilchoman is consistently 87-89 points in my book. The distillate is absolutely terrific, but too young, not complex enough, to garner 90 points. I can't wait for Kilchoman to come out with a 20something year old using an old, exhausted cask to show us what an aged Kilchoman can do. Nowadays, they are just putting out cask-driven juice, that while good, just isn't too exciting enough for folks to go ga-ga over.

Above all else: sweet spice is the first thing that hits your nose. And at first it is not really possible to separate which sweetness and which spice it is. Black cherries, red grapes, raisins and dried dates only reveal themselves over time. Café au lait, curry powder, hot pepper.
Despite his 56.2%, he is not too strong. Ripe grapes, blackberries, black currants. In addition milk chocolate, chocolate brownie, pepper and freshly grated nutmeg. Almonds. Slight peat smoke note.
Long and dark fruity with a long lingering smoke note. Hardly gets dry, the (berry) fruits linger for a long time.
