This is a rather high octane close to hazmat whisky that beckons for water. Water significantly opens up the taste to tame the ethanolic oil that can distract from some of the more delightful flavors. An oily leather sherry citrusy dram.
    • Nose
      87 87
cream of barley, apple cider folding into cinnamon sherry Christmas cake, lemony citrus, ethanolic, chewable children's multivitamin, slight mucilage (at times),
    • Taste
      88 88
oily, lemony, honey, pepper with ethanol. Water opens up the sherry, leather, peach, honey, chewable vitamin-like, and cinnamon notes, pine sap, Juicy Fruit gum, lemon juice concentrate,
    • Finish
      89 89
cinnamon leathery peppery honey lemon rind like. The flavors envelop your inner cheeks, but with a squeeze you can draw out more of the earlier flavors, which is an enjoyable aspect.

that rare case when it is still difficult to do without water. Unusual color, ruby-amber. Powerful, assertive and pretty good sherry monster
    • Nose
      88 88
cherry liqueur with spices, smoked dried fruits, apple jelly. powerful and straight as an ax
    • Taste
      87 87
smoked cherries with nuts, prunes with black raisins
    • Finish
      87 87
persimmon in cherry juice, spices and wood

In previous tastings, I have found this Deanston OK but somewhat lacking in some aspects. Without being over-analytical I would say the main fault is the finish. If it had one of those lovely finishes of a good Glenrothes this whisky might score an upper 8, but unfortunately, it is very much held back by that finish.
    • Nose
      87 87
a very solid sherry nose, not screaming tarty Oloroso at me. Blind I would think this was a Glenrothes in the 10-15 bracket. There is a marmite/savoury aspect, that is not something I want to sniff every day in a whisky. Maybe being at the end of the bottle it has been tamed a bit but the alcohol is not disabling my senses yet.
    • Taste
      86 86
ok, that alcohol is very much intact taken neat. Dusty kitchen cupboard, packet vegetable soup, burnt toffee. An interesting savoury mix with burnt notes.
    • Finish
      76 76
rather rough and chemical at this point, floor cleaner, now seems more like a 7yo than an 11yo. Water doesn't seem to soften the unpleasant aspects of the finish for me. A rather disappointing crash to earth.

    Delicious Deanston.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Milk chocolate and apricot.
    • Taste
      89 89
Milk chocolate, peach, pear and orange.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long finish with chocolate, a little oak and orange.

This one really needs some time, at first the alcohol dominates every part, pretty overwhelming actually. After some time, the strongest alcohol has gone, and things really get better, drinkable. Red fruits, berries.l, some hints of chocolate.
    • Nose
      86 86
A lot of chocolate immediately, some red fruits. Pretty some alcohol, nuts. Oily. Raisins. Caramel.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very powerful, pepper. Intense. Blue berries, cassis. Alcohol really dominates. Later on gets much more quiet. Some chocolate.
    • Finish
      85 85
Very powerful, strong, warming. Red fruits, berries. Raisins. Middle long finish, despite the high Abv. Chocolate as well.

I really like this diverse distillery and a single cask from Signatory certainly raises expectations.

Nose - Virginia tobacco, leather and sandlewood.

Taste - dark fruit, Asian spice, cinnamon and walnut. Nice oily, waxy texture.

    Finish - medium/long.

Thoughts - very, very nice. The really high abv (66%) will put a lot of people off, this isn’t for the new whisky drinker.

In a nutshell (SMWS-style name): "Brandied fig brioche”

Nose: Velvety rich figs, grand marnier, molasses and burnt caramel, classic Deanston brioche, fresh oak, cinnamon and dry clove, a hint of eucalyptus and sulphur.

Taste: Bitter orange and chocolate, more brioche, figs, cinnamon and clove. Little bit of raspberry comes out after a while to cut the dryness.

Very nice but could use a touch more fruit and the oak is a tad fresh, which is surprising to me because with an ABV like that you’d expect the oak was barely involved.

  13. Sandman scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Orange, marmalade, leather, earthy notes and cherry bonbons
    • Taste
Chocolate cookie dough, Lonka orange chips, nuts, marmalade and spicy
    • Finish
Long, warming, chocolate, orange zest, nutmeg, ginger and cherries.

  14. Ganga scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

    This is heavily sherried.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Dried Xmas fruits, cinnamon
    • Taste
      89 89
Yummy. Fresh baked bread with a buttery, sugary coating, dusting of cinnamon
    • Finish
      89 89
      Continuation of the palate

  15. Daan2 scored this whisky 80 points Expert Junior

Very high in alcohol. Drinkable only with water. Then a nice Deanston.

  16. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A bit more 'raw' and one-sided than cask 900073, and not as fudgy and nutty.
    • Nose
Cherry, raspberry, zure matten, caramel and apple. Slightly floral with water.
    • Taste
Raspberry, cherry, caramel, orange and vanilla.
    • Finish
      Cherry, caramel and apple.

90 points for this baby; if the mouthfeel was a little bit more oiley and the finish lasting even longer, I'd given this 2 extra points.
Clean sherry at high abv, so feel free to diminish it with water without sacrificing to much of this delicious whisky. Not overly complex, or rather not at all but that doesn't mean this is a monstrous dram. 90 in my book easily. If I didn't had to pick my purchases so carefully (rather : there's SO much released these days it's hard to keep up) I'd buy another in a heartbeat

    Balance (22)
Surprisingly balanced, without water quite difficult ... but such a game comes to me (88)
    • Nose
Lacquer, cherry ... chocolate, caramel and menthol lollipop, butterscotch. With water herbs, mint ... for the first time I find such minty freshness, (22)
    • Taste
      Dried fruits, chocolate, menthol (22)
    • Finish
Menthol finish, toothpaste, grass, dried fruits ... (22)

  19. HammerHead scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      88 88
Thick and heavy smells of leather, dark sherry fruitiness like plum fig and raisins, dark chocolate, nutmeg and clove.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very bold: leather, shoepolish cocoa, burnt treacle, flum fig loads of chili peppers and winter spices like clove and ginger. Water makes it advertently less peppery and a little rounder.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long: dark fruits, spicy and peppery wood bitters, loads of cocoa ending with a subtle musty mushroom note.
