The international movement is committed to protecting marine wildlife with absolute determination and strength. Most of the voluntary members start their struggle for the world's oceans from the coasts in more than 20 countries.
Ships are indispensable for the fight against whaling on the world's oceans - Sea Shepherd owns some of them, but the most famous ship in the fleet is the MY Steve Irwin. The Iceland-class patrol boat and former flagship of the Sea Shepherd fleet was used for 28 years by the environmental organization for the Scottish Fisheries Control Authority under the name "FPV Westra". When it was taken over by Sea Shepherd in 2006, the boat was initially renamed "MY Robert Hunter" after the Canadian Robert Hunter, who was the co-founder of the Greenpeace Foundation.
At the end of 2007, the organization changed the name to "MY Steve Irwin", in memory of the late Australian environmentalist who originally intended to accompany Sea Shepherd on the ship's first operation. The "Operation Migaloo" campaign successfully tackled illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean by the Japanese whaling fleet - a concern that Steve Irwin, who died shortly before the start of the operations, has always been a matter close to his heart, as he has always loved the wonderful creatures of the oceans to have.
With 18 missions, the Steve Irwin has participated in more campaigns than any other ship in the current fleet. The ship was retired last year and will from now on be exhibited in Williamstown (Victoria, Australia) as a museum ship. Whether it should also be used for other purposes is still being checked - for example, part of the ship is being discussed as a vegan restaurant and as a tattoo studio.
With regard to the origin of this ship and the important role at Sea Shepherd, a special bottling in the Sea Shepherd series was dedicated to this ship. Appropriately, a Bunnahabhain from the island of Islay was selected for this, which ripened from 2006-2019 in a 1st Fill Sherry Butt - the same period in which the ship was used by the Sea Shepherd organization. The whisky was bottled via Signatory Vintage with 46% vol. A total of 746 bottles of this limited bottling are available - as always not colored and not chilled.
Tasting notes of the Shea Shepherd Islay Malt:
Aroma: wonderfully clear smoke note with maritime-salty, but also hints of citrus fruits. Fresh and inviting.
Taste: The smoke dominates, but is pleasantly soft on the tongue. Salty sea notes and ripe citrus fruits accentuate the taste. A hint of sweetness is emerging.
Finish: Aromatic smoke that slowly fades away, as well as maritime, spicy notes linger for a long time. Clearly a tasty trip to the Hebrides.
