For some reason, Old Pulteney never drew my real attention. Why? I must say I have no idea. This is only the 2nd expression I tasted till date of this Highland distillery.
    • Nose
      88 88
Pleasant sweetness immediately draws my attention. Vanilla, light malty notes, tropical fruit and some citrus. None of these is dominant. Simply great!
    • Taste
      87 87
Normally I like to drink my whisky at CS. But this 46% is good enough. Oily and slightly thick mouthfeel. Both salty and sweet. The combination of sherry and bourbon casks work well.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long finish. Citrus, salty notes and dry.

Good remark by Defeatless: why was this taken off their core range? I would like to have a bottle.

    • Nose
      79 79
Fresh non-ripe fruits, marzipan, brine, some mineral/terpentine off-notes. Subtle oaky notes. Very complex nose, much going on, not quite easy to decipher.
    • Taste
      85 85
Typical old pulteney arrival, salty and brine notes. Then sweet notes of marzipan, honey, and some cereal/sugary notes. Not much sherry here, some subtle vanilla notes can be found. Again fresh fruits (pear I think). It benefits from time in the glass, and a splash of water
    • Finish
      83 83
The cask bitterness shows in the finish, but pleasantly. Salty and mouth drying.

  5. Defeatless scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A shame this one ever got out of the core range. IMHO the best Pulteney which was generally available.
    • Nose
Sweet marzipan, apricot, tutti fruity and some sea-breeze. In the background there is some vanilla and oak.
    • Taste
Sweet and sour arrival. Turns more to the dried tutti fruity side. Quite well balanced! A little dusty, but nothing to worry about.
    • Finish
Medium-long length. A little dry initially but there is quite some sour sweetness and a lot of vanilla and oak after a while. Fades away with some nice lemon juice notes.

Compared to the 21er has the more oak. And looks a little less elegant and balanced. Nevertheless, the beautiful Old Pulteney freshness (fruits and maritime notes) is included. I really like it too. In comparison to the new 15er, he looks much older. At the 21er but he is not quite ran. For that he lacks a bit of complexity.

  8. Albaron scored this whisky 87 points Specialist

He's fun. A very delicious whisky, beautiful strong oak notes and a strong maltiness creates a depth and complexity that is rounded off by the honey. Great
    • Nose
Immediately there is malty sweetness in the room, some dark bread, citrus notes, some ginger, the oak is already in the nose, strong herbal notes, a little musty, honey, vanilla and caramel
    • Taste
strong malty, caramel, honey, oak, some herbs and then it goes into the long finish
    • Finish
The beautiful oak notes swing in the finish and in addition the malty and honoring notes again and again

  9. Whiskywobbler scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

I find less sherry than I did in the 12 years and the 17 years have moved a few spots up the ladder, with more complexity, more maturity and just more quality.

  10. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The elder brother of 12, the same style, adjusted for age, added fortress and sherry barrels; minimalistic, but strong and recognizable base overgrown with additional sherry shades, acquired depth and power, and also kept quite an attractive price for whisky of this age and quality.
    • Nose
Saturated, dense, mineral-lemonade, in the background notes of dried fruits and cream tones.
    • Taste
Rich, spicy oak, orange peels, ginger, cream, fondant, toffee, light salty.
    • Finish
Ginger-orange (crusts), warming, spicy, in the background - creamy notes.

  12. ASWhisky scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

gentle aromas, very one-dimensional 80 out of 100 points
    • Nose
soft smell, soft pear, summer cereals, some marzipan yes, there is not so much left
    • Taste
in the beginning sweet bright yellow fruit apricot / pear pleasantly sweet, a little almond, more like a very mild good schnapps
    • Finish
Medium, weak, sweet, bright fruit, boring

  13. StyrianSpirit scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A very bright, "sparkling" malt with a pleasant "maritime touch". / A few drops of H2O make the 17-year-old (in contrast to the 21-year-old Old Pulteney) in my opinion even more interesting.
    • Nose
In the first impression very clear, intense, sherrytönig. (Reminds me of Glenfarclas 21y.)
    • Taste
Very nice, sharper start. Not alcoholic, but chilli-ish. The second sip of oak is added. / With a few drops of water very flowery, the mixture of light and dark fruits becomes more intense. Nevertheless, pleasant chill in the mouth.
    • Finish
An intense finish. In the end, actually a bit sourish apple. / With a little water, a gentle, medium-long finish convinces.

He smells great, oak, without any irritation. The Spanish and American oak blend perfectly. Spicy, strong, a campfire whisky.

     L11:

Fruity and spicy aroma, red apples, pear, cardamom, nutmeg, peat, malt, vanilla and floral honey. Vanilla sweet taste, pepper, mint, orange, nutmeg, walnuts and malt. Medium long, fruity and malty end.

Quite smoky, even peaty on the nose and some sweetness. Sweets and smoke predominate on the taste, but also get liquorice. Great balance of flavours and a long finish.

  21. nijholtm scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
less sweetness coming through, I get lemon with glue. Vanilla at the back and apples. Fresher then the 12yrs!
    • Taste
lemon, grass and vanilla. I think more cider then apples, probably because of the prickles on the tongue.
    • Finish
Goes on and on, long finish with lemon through to lovely American wood and slowly fading into malt & white pepper.

  22. mmaclean did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

"A delicious Highland dram from Old Pulteney, this 17yo is comnprised of

90% refill bourbon casks with the remainder being from Oloroso casks.

Lovely sweet aromas of butterscotch, honey and chocolate, with some

faint salt and oakspice on the palate."

    • Nose
Much less ozone than the 12 though it's still there. Rather more toffee - maybe more like peanut brittle than toffee as such.
Still something floral about it too.
    • Taste
More of the lemon and then a big hit of malt. Some oaky spice starts to appear.
    • Finish
Lots more of the spice develops and malt coats the back of the palate. Nice sweet finish - doesn't have the bitterness of the latest 12

  24. hsmithjr scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Complex, but not overly so.  Very, very nice.
    • Nose
Fruity.  Apple jam.  Pears.  Honey and vanilla.  Marshmallows.
    • Taste
Hay and nuts.  Fresh grass.  Salt.  Black pepper.  Apple pastry.
    • Finish
Spicy and salty.  Barley.  Medium, and refreshing.

  25. Timo scored this whisky 51 points Expert Junior

    A disappointing experience.
    • Nose
The nose is medium. Sweetish, wine, fruity, floral, almond.
    • Taste
The taste is disappointing. Snappy, salty, bitter, almond.
    • Finish
The finish is surprisingly long. Soft and warm.
