Elements of Islay is a very popular (and rightly so) range of peated Islay bottlings by Elixir Distillers (a subunit of TWE). Most bottlings are from a single distillery, but they have also released a blended Islay malt expression in the past called ‘Peat’. The Peat & sherry expression is a rich and smoky Islay blended malt (from two distilleries) which was matured in a single sherry butt adding a nice sweet note. It is bottled at 56.8% and retails for a very sane price of £49.95.

Nose: Sweet marinated BBQ’ed meat, with a sweet maple syrup glazing, sultanas, and blood oranges, a hint of sea-spray, more bacon strips, and wood fires. lovely smoke and sweet cured meat intertwined, cough syrup and some leaves too. The whole setting reminds me of a BBQ session when sleeping out on a camping site.

Palate: Smoke, chocolate infused with sherry, and sultana juices, leather and baked red apples in sweet sauce, spices, and more BBQ meat and bacon, some soot and ash as well, but the sweetness and sweet glazed meats, rule overall. Peat, and more ash, then some burnt sugar.

Finish: raisins, smoke, wine tannins, and leather.

Conclusion: This is a really good and enjoyable daily dram displaying a lovely balance of peat smoke and sweet sherry influence. Recommended, and a great VFM.

Is there a combination in whisky as foolproof as peat and sherry?
    • Nose
Vegetal peat with notes of barbecue smoke and crisp bacon, followed by a whiff of cocoa powder, but also burnt rubber and liquorice. Slightly coastal too. Fairly balanced and rich.
    • Taste
Lovely sweet arrival with a thick mouthfeel. Bits of charcoal and ash, followed by sweet peat and soft notes of rubber, but also more of that barbecued bacon. There's a few soft spices, highlighted by nutmeg and pepper, as well as raisins.
    • Finish
Lingering peat smoke and subtle spices.

Elements of Islay Peat and Sherry 56.8% Whisky Exchange exclusive. Dodgy muted aroma of oak and papery sherry. Slight soured milk ... lactic. Taste is intense rounded oily smoke oak and coffee, a little rough around the edges for sure. Oaky spicy smoky oily. Breathy smoke. Bit of coal gas. OK stuff - it doesn't strike me as containing much South Islay stuff (OK there could be some Ardbeg). My guess would be mostly Bunnahabhain and/or Bowmore mixed with Caol Ila from the vibes I'm getting. Passable. 3.2 /77

This feels very modern and engineered to fit a certain profile. But I really like the flavors present here. I would love to know the distillery composition that went into this blend. Good stuff.⁣
    • Nose
Petrichor, sweet BBQ’d meat, bonfire smoke, oven smoked maple bacon, sea spray/seaweed coastal elements, leather. Very BBQ smoky-sweet with coastal notes.⁣
    • Taste
Smoky, sooty, lots of jammy fruity notes. Fatty smoked brisket burnt ends, very salty, burning charred wood, cigarette ash, red berry notes.
    • Finish
Smoke, ash, stewed red berries, and lingering saltiness. Good length.

I really enjoy it. There is a lot to taste and at the same time it is very drinkable. It is quickly poured into a nice round. The first smell and taste comes an “Oh!” and then the glass will empty faster than you intended. Full review (in german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/04/13/peat-sherry/

I like that up-to-date 2020 sherry profile of this little series. In a head-to-head tasting I prefer this here, which I do not find as sweet as other tasters described it, over the LMDW bottling, but both were beaten by the very dark "for Germany" and its bitter, bitter sweetness. Well done!
