Whisky Reviews for Orkney 1998 Arc

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A decent Highland Park of which we have seen plenty undisclosed expression of this period. A bit unbalanced in my view.
    • Nose
Gentle earthy peat intermingled with sour apples and gooseberries. Coastal kippery notes of dried-crab-shells and smoked mussels. Some leafiness. Burnt hay and hints of white pepper. Rubbery notes at the background.
    • Taste
Quite grainy and gristy with a clearly peaty underground. I also got barley sugar, liquorice and aniseed. Later on vegetal notes of freesias and geraniums. Hints of apple-mint. It's all quite nervous if you ask me.
    • Finish
Medium long. Peppery. A little pine. Becomes quite salty at the end. Too unbalanced to be really good.

  2. J.B.Saxon scored this whisky 90 points Member Senior

Nose: Oranges, slightly peat and heather (-honey) notes.
Taste: Herbs and crushed pepper, followed by a hint of salt.
The finish is medium, semi dry, salty and finally a kind of bitterness appears.
Adding some water opens an oily kind of wax.

    ????: straw,
????: delicate but intense, waxy-floral, sweet-varnish, a little warm, a little volatile, subtle atmosphere of a nice ex-bourbon, there is also a pinch of peat, very delicate, nice nose !!!
????: smooth, delicate, oily, warming, melts in the mouth with a nice sweetness and varnish, yum!
    ????: long, warming,

Very nice, subtle but also variable whisky, not so much changeable as consistent and not one-dimensional! Te 21yo has already given her velvety and delicacy. Miam yum yum !!! :)

This is another one where the average WB score is right on.
    • Nose
      90 90
Semi-sweet riesling, apple vinegar cider, sweet peat
    • Taste
      89 89
Creamy and very oil, dense mouthfeel. Quite peaty for a Highland Park and I quite like it. Also some old metals, some sweet bitterness, not unlike grapefruit, but also teetering on chalk and crushed stones. Swims well with water. A very masculine HP, with strong edges.
    • Finish
      87 87
The ending is not totally balanced, with lingering grapefruit pith and crushed aspirins.
