Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1998 Arc

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Supposed to be leftovers from the Butterfly Ben Nevis Arc bottled for the U.S. As Cask Plan participant I was able to purchase this very limited botting. Not the best Ben Nevis around to be honest. A tad too bitter for my taste, in particular in the finish.
    • Nose
Got this typical Ben Nevis profile in the nose; fruitiness of sour apples galia melons and conference pears with a slightly candied edge. Orange peel and lemon grass as well. Hints of vanilla and honey-clover at the background. I also got an off note of wet plaster.
    • Taste
Barley sugar and maltiness at first. Followed by bitter-sweetness of grapefruit. Lots of gooseberries combined with a touch of pineapple. Sandal wood. It's all quite creamy and waxy, but at the same time not very complex if you ask me.
    • Finish
Medium long. A little white pepper. Ginger. Becomes more bitter at the end with lots of grape skins and oak.

  2. HammerHead scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

An almost ideal summer whisky. Light with an almost sparkling sour fruitiness, well balanced and really tasty.
    • Nose
Light, sweet and sour, summer fruits. Sour apples, pear, lemon, lime, peardrops, Napoleon candy. Also quite foral and even grassy, a little vanilla, butter and dusty wood with a faint dirty farm note in the background.
    • Taste
A sparkling fruity sourness, still loads of lemon and lime, grapefruit, but also the distinctly sweeter pear note. A more creamy mouthfeel than expected with mild vanilla and subtle notes of pepper and bitterish oak.
    • Finish
Medium in length: interestingly enough the sourness disappears quickly and completely, leaving a bitterish feel which does remind of grape skins indeed. Ends with gentle notes of wood spice.

  3. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Ben Nevis distillate has a great range... almost like a chameleon. Adapts to various casks well.

      Green apples and pears. Loads.
    • Taste
      90 90
A cross between a Sauternes and a Gewurztraminer. Green grapes and apples. A bit dry.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long. To be honest, this is like a very good white wine, but at 48.2%.

Sweet with cereals, some grass, light fruits (grapes, pears, but also some apples), followed by a slight note of perfume / soap, which disappears again
With a little time, fresh fruits become more fermented
      With water: get more acidic
    • Taste
      89 89
sour start, tingling on the tongue, oak present, hardly sweet anymore, with grapes and pears
Creamier with water and a little less oak flavor
    • Finish
      88 88
Grape skins, even slightly waxy after a while
Add some dark chocolate with water and some freshly cut wood

No surprise: Ben Nevis distillate meets wood. Nice combination!

      Thank you Henri

This is a sweet whisky packed with flavour, tastes quite young but the quality is definitely there.
