Whisky Reviews for Glenkinchie 10-year-old

23 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 78.14 points

  1. Malthead19 scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

    - a young, slightly fruity and at the same time spicy single malt
    - rather average compared to other 10 year single malts
    • Nose
      Pear, green apple, still looks quite young
    • Taste
      woody, pear. Oak, strong start but then it quickly loses its aroma
    • Finish
      short, slightly spicy finish;
      medium-long, dry, somewhat spicy aftertaste

  2. schengel10 scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

    a very fruity, quite simple single malt - at an acceptable price at the time;
    quite one-dimensional, whereby ... the 43.0% are good for him ... I also see him a point better than the Cardhu 12 Y ...
    • Nose
      Apples, pears, apricots, lemons, freshly mown meadow;
    • Taste
      fully fruity (oily (multivitamin) juice, oranges) and very sweet (malt sugar), subtle spices;
    • Finish
      quite short, distinctly lemons, tart aftertaste;

    Glenkinchie can be found 25 kilometers south of Edinburgh, which explains its nickname ‘The Edinburgh Malt’. The whisky was fairly unknown until Diageo added it to the Classic Malts series as representative of the Lowland style. We will try the old 10 Year Old, which has been replaced by the 12 Year Old in the meantime.

    The nose is sweet with a truckload of breakfast cereals, a surprising trace of woodsmoke and freshly cut grass. Those typical Scottish oatmeal cookies emerge. But unfortunately there is also a strangely soapy side to it. Shampoo? Strange and a bit disturbing. Some candle wax and patato skins. Luckily also some oranges and heather honey.

    The body is more than okay. I had expected this to be more flat. In fact, it is fairly powerful at first. Quite some sweetness: a combination of apple juice and orange juicy with some lemon juice in the mix. Loads of juices, eh? But also some candied ginger, black pepper and even a salty edge that I did not expect. You could almost say this is complex. But that is not synonymous for good. This is okay-ish. The soapiness now leans towards bubblegum with caramel.

    The finish is longer than expected with a lot of caramelized and peppered citrus fruit and sweet barley sugars at the death.

    This is far from a great malt and you know that I have a soft spot for Lowlanders, so that is saying something. I’ll stick to Auchentoshan or Bladnoch (unless you still have a bottle of Rosebank of Saint Magdalene on the shelf, obviously).

  8. St. Pauli scored this whisky 77 points Connoisseur

    Not bad, but not complex either.
    • Nose
      Caramel, porridge, lemon grass, dried apricot, hay, apples. With water, the fruitiness reveals itself better.
    • Taste
      Quite thin, a bit bitter, grass, pear, apple, fudge, almonds, spices.
    • Finish
      Grassy, ginger, dried fruits, pear

  17. drkrylov scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      Freshly aromatic: grassy, spicy and lemongrassy.
    • Taste
      Soft, spicy: cinnamon and, ginger. Beautiful balance of sweetness and dryness.
    • Finish
      Fragrant spicy dryness.

  18. HunterRomario scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      Light fruityly malty scents, they had.
    • Taste
      Hmm, pleasant surprise, especially in taste, for not expecting anything, so very decent and complex taste, full of vanilla and honey.
    • Finish
      Well-drinkable whisky from the Nile, I think Glen Ord 12y will be happy with Glenkinchie 10y and vice versa. An inconspicuous and inexpensive brand that is worth exploring.

  20. Feusi scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

    Honey-sweet, a summer meadow with a delicate smoke. Easy to drink and pleasant with a long finish. This is a forgotten classic bottle. Unusual, in the fresh scent a little smoke (Lowland?) Very pleasant and easy to drink. Surprisingly complex.

    to avoid, 12 years is already better
    • Nose
      lemon and herbaceous
    • Taste
      sweet peat tip, cereals, malt, some fruits
    • Finish
      sweet, without relief

    • Nose
      All kinds of fruit on the nose
    • Taste

  23. CrilleVBG scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

    Your standard 10yo, no more no less. You get what you pay for.
    • Nose
      Tingling nose feeling from the alkohol. Fruity and floral, and I can find apples and pears.
    • Taste
      Smooth taste, little too smooth. Lots of wood, and hints of almonds.
    • Finish
      Short, but spicy. Marzipan.
