For me this is a great whisky without compromise, Laphroaig with age and well integrated sherry influence is my thing anyway. Yes, the sherry has of course had a lot of influence here and in direct comparison with the Angel's Choice he loses. But not as clearly as I would have expected after the first reviews.
Water doesn't harm him now, but it changes the profile a bit in the wrong direction for me.
He definitely beats the recently released MoS Bowmore for me and for me the highlight so far in this young year.
    • Nose
Starts fruity and fresh, distinct sherry influence, sweet, raisins, dark chocolate, a little old leather, slightly iodine, at the beginning, not even that smoky, a breeze of cinnamon, a little mint, tobacco, I think it has a very good flavor brings itself, the smoke is rather medium strong, you can tell that it has been broken down a bit over the years, also a few nuts, all in all a very nice nose, over time the chocolate sweetness becomes more and more dominant, it becomes more supple, short I have to think of Lumumba, now rather whole milk chocolate, alcohol is well integrated, in between I smelled the Laphroaig Angel's Choice, afterwards the impression of whole milk chocolate is even more intense, almost as if you smelled a chocolate bar, some smoked bacon is added to it Angel's Choice is spicy and has a lot more oak, the 20001 is creamier, fresher, a little bit less complex, but also very pleasant and to stay inviting, is getting sweeter, now also slightly effervescent, before it turns back to the rather dark raisins
the first sip tickles the last intensity from the nose again, now seems really plump, now I had not had the Angel's Choice in my hand for a few minutes and therefore it now looks spicier with a definitely decent oak influence, and of course still A lot of chocolate, if you like chocolate you will get your money's worth here, now also light roasted aromas on the nose
      with water: no noticeable change
    • Taste
directly ashy smoke, phenolic, then oily sherry, intense, roasted aromas, espresso, dark fruit, rather dry mouthfeel, fat, dark chocolate, nuts, good mouthfeel, full-bodied
Boah, the second sip starts creamy, I now allow more enjoyment and less analysis and that helps extremely, a hint of cinnamon is added, now also in the mouth a little oak, slightly woody, nice, raisins, a little sweeter than the first time, but not overboard now, doesn't need water
with water: much more cinnamon, a little thinner, raisins, a little lighter, sparkling, not bad either, but I prefer the variant without water
    • Finish
the dryness becomes stronger, the mouth is full, nuts, raisins, ashy smoke, but less than when starting, grape skin, pleasant and warm, you can wait a bit for the next sip
with water: less dry, stays creamier, chocolate, light acidity, more nuts, some gunpowder on the palate

Wow what a nose, rarely had such fresh and present red fruits as raspberries and cherries.
But overall, an absolutely coherent and balanced Sherry Laphi, here (almost) everything fits.
    • Nose
      94 94
A thick load of freshly picked raspberries and cherries, sweetness and acidity alike, plus a little salty.
Oranges and cinnamon are added later.
The smoke is not too dominant, but accompanies the other aromas perfectly in the background all the time.
      Nothing seems fake.
      Harmony par excellence!
    • Taste
      92 92
Even if it can't quite keep up on the palate, it's still wonderfully creamy & oily.
Full, earthy and tobacco, although not as intensely fresh and fruity, but more ripe red fruits.
Slightly ashy smoke and a slight dryness.
The alcohol transports the aromas to their full extent without being spicy, the 54.4% are integrated perfectly.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Medium-Long
ashy, earthy, malty, maritime, light acidity.

Laphroaig, MoS and I - in this composition we will probably no longer be best friends. Not the first Sherry Laphroaig from MoS, where I have the impression that the sherry barrel was used too excessively. It looks too designed. Too much barrel, too little Laphroaig. It may take a Laphroaig to create this (recurring) flavor profile - but it doesn't have much to do with Laphroaig itself, any more than the many new sherry barrel-tuned undisclosed Islay NAS whisky from the south coast of Islam, "somewhere “Between Laphroaig and Ardbeg, anything to do with Lagavulin.
Not a bad whisky - but you shouldn't expect Laphroaig.
    • Nose
A fat sherry nose with raisins, dried figs, fermented grapes and old leather. Very sweet and fruity, fresh blackberries and black currants also mix with the dried fruits. At the same time, it transports cardamom, clove powder and nutmeg to the nose, plus finally smoke and a fine smoked bacon note that pleasantly weakens the fruit sweetness.
    • Taste
Viscose and fruity sweet with Em-eukal bonbon wild cherry flavor. Earthy, mossy. Smoke. Old cellar floor, musty wood. Menthol resonates. Peppermint. Tart herb mix, raisins, fermenting grapes, a hint of sulfur.
    • Finish
Medium-long finish, dry. Cold berry compote, tart herbs. Menthol has settled down and wobbles through the mouth.

A dream of smoke and sweet dark fruits

Very good Laphroaig from the First Fill Sherry Hogshead.
It's fun and doesn't overwhelm anyone.
The only thing that keeps me from a 90 rating ... is the somewhat short finish and the low seasoning on tap. After 20 years it still looks very lively, which I like.

EDIT: I also tasted the Bowmore Laimrig.
The two are absolutely eye to eye ... You can tell how good the Laimrig was. It's a shame that prices rise like this :(
    • Nose
      89 89
Subtly sweetish medical smoke, I wouldn't have guessed blindly on a laphi.
Coastal flavors spread, seaweed, salt, iodine and some rubber (does not bother!).
After eight, honey, red apples. Everything in harmony.
    • Taste
      90 90
Nice start, the alcohol whips the flavors forward.
Very sweet, the saliva foot is stimulated properly.
The smoke plays with oranges, candied apples and milk chocolate. Fresh and with a bite.
Definitely looks younger than he is.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Short to medium.
      Caramel and chocolate.
      With a pleasant wine note.
      0.0% dry or bitter.

Creamy honey, brown sugars, with umami sweet, rich citrus sourness, rich black pepper and fennel, and ginger spices, cinnamon, baked mushrooms, citrus bitterness, great smokes. 89
