For me this is a great whisky without compromise, Laphroaig with age and well integrated sherry influence is my thing anyway. Yes, the sherry has of course had a lot of influence here and in direct comparison with the Angel's Choice he loses. But not as clearly as I would have expected after the first reviews.
Water doesn't harm him now, but it changes the profile a bit in the wrong direction for me.
He definitely beats the recently released MoS Bowmore for me and for me the highlight so far in this young year.
Starts fruity and fresh, distinct sherry influence, sweet, raisins, dark chocolate, a little old leather, slightly iodine, at the beginning, not even that smoky, a breeze of cinnamon, a little mint, tobacco, I think it has a very good flavor brings itself, the smoke is rather medium strong, you can tell that it has been broken down a bit over the years, also a few nuts, all in all a very nice nose, over time the chocolate sweetness becomes more and more dominant, it becomes more supple, short I have to think of Lumumba, now rather whole milk chocolate, alcohol is well integrated, in between I smelled the Laphroaig Angel's Choice, afterwards the impression of whole milk chocolate is even more intense, almost as if you smelled a chocolate bar, some smoked bacon is added to it Angel's Choice is spicy and has a lot more oak, the 20001 is creamier, fresher, a little bit less complex, but also very pleasant and to stay inviting, is getting sweeter, now also slightly effervescent, before it turns back to the rather dark raisins
the first sip tickles the last intensity from the nose again, now seems really plump, now I had not had the Angel's Choice in my hand for a few minutes and therefore it now looks spicier with a definitely decent oak influence, and of course still A lot of chocolate, if you like chocolate you will get your money's worth here, now also light roasted aromas on the nose
with water: no noticeable change
directly ashy smoke, phenolic, then oily sherry, intense, roasted aromas, espresso, dark fruit, rather dry mouthfeel, fat, dark chocolate, nuts, good mouthfeel, full-bodied
Boah, the second sip starts creamy, I now allow more enjoyment and less analysis and that helps extremely, a hint of cinnamon is added, now also in the mouth a little oak, slightly woody, nice, raisins, a little sweeter than the first time, but not overboard now, doesn't need water
with water: much more cinnamon, a little thinner, raisins, a little lighter, sparkling, not bad either, but I prefer the variant without water
the dryness becomes stronger, the mouth is full, nuts, raisins, ashy smoke, but less than when starting, grape skin, pleasant and warm, you can wait a bit for the next sip
with water: less dry, stays creamier, chocolate, light acidity, more nuts, some gunpowder on the palate
