I didn’t really know what to expect, but this turned out to be pretty good. The cask isn’t quite as dominant as I thought it’d be – I think I could still pick this out as an Arran blind. I feel like the cask influence might even not be intense as I’d have liked, just to get an idea what the Pineau des Charentes is like. Plenty of rich sweet fruit and typical Arran malty/gingery/nutty flavours, but for me this dram starts to fall apart a bit as it develops. There’s a weird slightly artificial-tasting fruit candy note on the back end of the palate, and the finish after that is pretty short. All in all, more of an average Arran than I was expecting.

Nose: Oh yeah, sweet and syrupy. Fruity flavours of guava jelly, tinned peaches, maraschino cherries (the nice ones), green table grapes, and dried mango. Some more rounded notes of malt, toffee, honeycomb, coconut, candied nuts, sesame oil and poppyseeds. Spiced with cinnamon and ginger. Slightly salty.

Palate: Thick texture, with moderate heat. Concentrated sweet fruit up front: tangerine, cherries, and more guava jelly. The fruit steps aside a little on the development: there’s some sweet toasted oak, barley sugar, brioche crusts, vanilla-frosted cinnamon buns. It turns a bit spicy, with cinnamon, ginger, and pink peppercorn heat. Some richer red fruit notes of pomegranate and raspberry towards the back, with a bit of a weird candy note.
Adding a dribble of water, there’s more malt and pepper.

Finish: Medium-short. Pear, strawberries, honey, vanilla, and lots of cinnamon.
The water doesn't change the finish much.
