  1. hs305 scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

[December, 2018] I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting. Important: This was a 70cl bottle (not 75cl) so it was bottled after 1991 when the EU downsized all high spirits bottle sizes to 70cl only. And always remember usually there are several different batches of such standard editions bottled (especially at Springbank where they own a rather small vatting tun only).

Who said old Springbank drams are always excellent? Here is the proof that this is a fairytale - as with any other distillery there are weakish old Springbank releases too like this one. It is completely unimpressive and austere with a rather "industrial-flavours" profile. If you own a bottle I suggest not to open it and either leave it for display in your collection or sell it for a hell of money and buy a truly excellent release from the profit...

PS: This malt (like many other whiskies that own a somewhat plastics note) is a taste bud tranquilizer because all other drams taste dull and unimpressive after this one. I tried several whiskies that I had right before this Springbank and now they are all both plastic-alike and flat. So my tasting session has ended tonight and this whisky is awarded a "diabolic" finish score...
    • Nose
      86 86
The colour is pale gold and the nose is rather shy and a little austere. There are (almost) no fruits and for sure not a single sherry-induced aroma (so all the batch was made of bourbon casks) but many rather "industrial" notes like plastics, minerals, metals and the like. It is actually not bad but it is not my preferred nosing style at all.
    • Taste
      83 83
The taste is again austere and not really impressive on sweet barley sugars, some shy fruits and more of the "industrial" stuff. Beside plastics and metals I find candlewax, concrete dust and ashes. Maybe a dram for construction workers? Water just flattens the dram without adding new impressions...
    • Finish
      66 66
The dram arrives warming but not coating in the mouth with a minor bitter-drying feeling from heavy woods (tannins). The finish is short (actually very short) and adds no new impressions - I am tempted to state "there is no finish at all". Like with other (old) drams that tasted somewhat plastic this whisky is a taste bud tranquilizer because all following drams are dull and flat after this (I tried several that I know very well)...

  2. Odessit did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Springbank 1978 (46%, OB, +/-1992) Four stars and a half There were different 1978s, such as the ‘house and tree label’, but this is well the classic ‘black label’ (some poets rather coined it ‘yellow thistle label’). Colour: straw. Nose: it’s a rather austere one, pretty acrid, mineral, and grassy, without any sherriness – not to mention raisins or dried fruits. I’m finding quite a lot of shoe polish and old metal (second-hand spare parts, perhaps), which gives this Springbank a rather Longrowy feeling. Some fresh walnuts as well, as well as a little plasticine. Mouth: more sweetness, rather around grapefruits, with an acidic side and always a lot of plasticine, paraffin, stone, bone dry riesling, and then a saltiness and plenty of grass. Austere, getting ashy and even saltier. Finish: quite long, with some zests, salt, chalk, and more paraffin. A rather smoky aftertaste. Comments: they weren’t filling pricey great casks at that time, but the end result is that the spirit remained kind of naked and ‘natural’. Which I enjoy! SGP:362 - 89 points.
