[September, 2021] A small sample only...

...but a great one! These old Springbank are always excellent, I never a sub-standard one (at least I cannot remember it).
    • Nose
      92 92
The colour is amontillado sherry and the nose offers a delicate old-style sherry profile with the holy whisky trinity of malt, wine and wood in perfect balance. Not a single off-note but lots of delicious aromas flood my olfactory cells which grow stronger upon oxidation. I suggest to let it breath for twenty minutes, at least.
    • Taste
      93 93
The taste is a delicious amalgam of the traditional (slightly "funky" Springbank malt flavours, a perfect old-style sherry maturation and appropriate (meaning not too strong) spicy woods. Again nicely balanced and without any flaw but greatly chewable. Later waxes, coffee beans and chalky-resinous notes join in while the sherry retreats somewhat.
    • Finish
      92 92
The initial mouthfeel is warming and instantly coating without distracting moments. The finish is medium to long and adds more oily (machine oils) and spicy impressions as well as some dark chocolatey notes. No bitter or drying moments until the very end. Water is not needed but does no harm either.

Great old style dark sherried Springbank - belongs to my favorites. I could sip this endlessly.
    • Nose
First toffee galore, then the fruits come out, oranges, plums, ripe bananas, tropical fruits, sweet oak wood, faint smoke
    • Taste
Warm, smooth, liquorice, fruity, woody, perfect level of sweetness, brown sugar, toffee and dark chocolate
    • Finish
Warm and long, no bitterness at all, the aromas arrive even deeper

These old Springbanks are often beautiful, and this one is no exception. A malt sometimes on the edge of the razor, as the balance between the wood and the fruity / sherry is tense, but which stays afloat with panache! Should be worth 93/100 "in my books", but earn a point for this absolutely fabulous nose, without any restraint.
    • Nose
I love the nose of these old Springbanks. It is a basket of dried fruit, papayas, apricots, pineapple, candied orange zest, a sweet exoticism but not disgusting. A veil of coal smoke covers the fruit, accompanied by sherry, wax, precious wood, old weathered furniture. Happiness !
    • Taste
Terrible ... We find all that the nose foreshadowed, a superb balance between fruity acidity, sugar, a good woody bitterness that avoids sinking into malt for lovers of sweets, and always this very subtle touch of smoke. The 46% are fully exploited, we do not feel any weakness.
    • Finish
Long, but not enough ... We would like it to last forever. It is well marked by the bitterness of tannins, but a last fruity touch of sugar and acidity allows it not to fall into the excess of wood.
