Great sherry cask. The whisky has nice dry elements and my beloved tobacco note in a rare intensity.
    • Nose
Dry, nutty sherry on the nose, very strong tobacco association, I like this very much. But also some sherry dried fruit. Nice nose.
    • Taste
A bit hot in the mouth at first, but then a great bittersweet composition, quite tart, astringent, walnut shells, tobacco including a slight ethereal spiciness.
    • Finish
The finish is initially in the beautiful interplay between sweet and dry notes and above all a very pronounced aroma that is reminiscent of a good cigar. Rarely a whisky that awakens these associations so clearly for me, and that without peat.

Today a Macduff from 2008 is up for tasting. The whisky comes from the Natural Color | Cask Strength - Series by Signatory Vintage and was bottled at cask strength with 63% vol. When it was eleven years old. The whisky is reddish brown and has a medium viscosity in the glass.
My sample comes from a bottle that has been open for a long time and the description and rating refer to a sample that has been reduced to 45% by volume. The high alcohol content invites you to experiment and, depending on the concentration, different facets can be discovered in the whisky. A very exciting bottling for me.
    • Nose
      88 88
When you first smell it, a very pleasant note of sandalwood, caramel, moist tobacco, toffee, liquorice. I perceive a touch of fruit acid from red currants, rose water, plums from the rum pot. This is followed by milk chocolate and a little sweet mocha. I mean to hear a slight note of wood wax or a gentle furniture polish without being intrusive or unpleasant. I really like the play of aromas.
    • Taste
      88 88
The soft interplay of light fruit acid, sweetness and mocha continues on the palate. At this concentration, the alcohol is subtle and pleasing and doesn't bother you at all.
Sherry notes spread oily on the palate, herbal notes are added and alternate with the fruit notes. Pickled plums and mandarins from a rum pot, ripe banana, peanuts, some tobacco and gentle wood notes, liquorice.

This whisky is more on dark and soft aromas and despite its comparatively young eleven years, very nice ripe tones can be found. Due to the high alcohol content, it invites you to experiment and depending on the concentration, the whisky shows different facets. An exciting and successful drop.
    • Finish
      87 87
The Macduff shows up in the finish in the middle. There are nice notes of dark fruits, some invigorating mint and a bitter sweetness of dark chocolate for men. The sandalwood note comes back on the palate after a short, astringent period and spreads in the mouth. A very pleasant flavor remains.

Even if the 63% of the paper form provokes reaching for the pipette - it is best to try undiluted with a little ventilation, use of the glass wall and small amounts in the glass. With water, the whisky will certainly gain a majority, but unfortunately it will also lose a lot of its character. Ripe, dark dried fruit on the nose, a lot of caramel and a slight maltiness in the base, plus dark rolling tobacco, pine cones, fine liquorice aromas and a very present alcohol note, which is pretty well integrated. On the palate, the nose continues with identical aromas, plus a good portion of pepper, walnut, bacon fresh from the pan, beautifully integrated wood, and despite its dark chocolate notes, overall with a dry finish. Long, spicy-sweet aftertaste that is really pushed off by the alcohol. Overall, the whisky delivers on the present rather than complex side, but if done correctly (see above), absolutely great material comes into the glass with a great PLV!

Great sherry bomb with a very attractive price-performance ratio.
    • Nose
The alokohol tingles and initially cools in the nose. Behind it you first see spicy walnuts, which are then gradually replaced by sweet and fruity aromas. I discover overripe bananas, raisins and sticky-sweet dates.
    • Taste
The alcohol is also very powerful here. Intensely warming and spicy-nutty on the tongue. Creamy consistency with tannins and some leather. Then chocolaty on the palate. Overall less fruity than the nose, but more barrel-shaped.
    • Finish
Warm, but rather only medium length. Nutty and slowly getting drier.

It doesn't happen often that I first write the review before I enter the points ...

Nose: the alcohol comes through first. There's a dark sweetness underneath. Slight notes of marzipan and hazelnut and red fruits

Mouth: You can taste the alcohol. Not too annoying but also not perfectly integrated. Dry but I already had drier ones.

Finish: a sharp spice runs through the upper, rear throat. The dry sweetness remains pleasant on the tongue

The whisky definitely has its rough edges, but I'm not entirely convinced. Very tasty but nothing earth-shattering

You can dilute this whisky directly, otherwise the wort will simply knock your socks off (and also make later tasting a bit difficult).
    • Nose
      82 82
      Alcohol dominates.
      some water: clearly fruity
    • Taste
      88 88
      very dry. strong start, sherry.
      some water: definitely fruity
even more water: pleasing, typical sherry notes
    • Finish
      85 85
      Very spicy, 63% ...
      Then some smoke / charring
      some water: more spice. Gigantic.
even more water: sweet, light fruit
