  1. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    Pleasant and soft whisky, quite simple and unpretentious, but complete, well-balanced, drinkable, quite in the style of a distillery.
    • Nose
      Discreet, moist, spicy woods, treated boards, nuts, vanilla, mineral notes, leather goods, some sweet caramel notes, fudge.
    • Taste
      Soft, calm, a lot of oak, very delicate, sharp mineral tones, nuts, leather goods, sweet creamy shades - toffee, fudge; some cappuccino and milk chocolate, lemon peel.
    • Finish
      Light, refreshing, continuation of the taste - delicate and spicy oak with minerals and creamy sweetness, nuts and leather goods.

    This one I tried in a tasting of old OB classics from the 70's and 80's of Springbank. A decent dram even with it's minor flaws, though no classic in my book.  Probably suffered a bit from the company of the mindblowing 70's 12, 15 and 21 in the same tasting. The bottle is the same as in the picture, the colour of the liquid was very pale white wine. Some of the other reviews make me wonder whether we are talkig about the same spirit: I find it highly unlikely that the colour could be considerably darker in an individual bottle.
    • Nose
      Quite pungent, chalky dry. Doesn't open up at the beginning, celery and chicory. A salmiak maltiness lingers somewhere in the background. Young and raw. With a drop of water (small one considering the strength) opens up and turns rounder, with a mild sweet smoke and savoury syrup (umami?). Good. Tar-lozenges.
    • Taste
      Salty and a bit flat, honey, mild vanilla. Shellfish, alga, liquerice/salmiak. More in the direction of salmiak.
    • Finish
      Salmiak, a bit stingy, thin.

    WOW !!

    Fine Spirits_butler1 and me tasted a sample in May 2016.

    A first class Whisky.

    We think that a lot of much older Whiskies are inside these bottles.

    I got an Italian bottling that is much (MUCH!) darker than the photo above … - just great!
    • Nose
      It starts with motor oil, cellar, peat - mixed with hidden old fruit sweetness, old lemon, hair tonic (full!), old loft, mineral (rocks etc.), old cabinet, cocoa-Rum-marzipan pralines with old walnut, apple cake;

      then red fruits, berries from the wood and from the bushes, oranges and tangerines mingle with all and with some sourness and with some Minestrone and bullion cubes, pickled plums, with fruit brandies soaked wood, caramel, caramel mixed with coffee, scouring powder comes up;

      apple juice, crushed apple in leather bag, melted butter, bun with sausage, smoky grain, memories of Mousse au chocolat;

      old upholstery - soaked with Rumtopf and fruit brandies, pickled fruits - covered with chocolate ...
    • Taste
      Starting with sweet and spicy jams you can find all aromas of the nose also on the palate, so I stopped writing down the journey through this masterwork ...
    • Finish
      Old motor and motor oil, workshop, sweetness, old fruits, Rumtopf, fruit brandies, cocoa, burnt cake, old furnitures, apples, scouring powder, butter, sausage ...

    A fantastic old Springbank. Despite it 8 years it already has a lot of depth.
    • Nose
      Starts with floral notes of lilac and violet. Followed by fruity delicateness of apples, pear and green bananas. Herbs of fennel and carraway. A little balsamico vinegar at the background. Execellent nose: complex, old and dusty.
    • Taste
      Quite punchy but still balanced. Cooked apples, coconut and soft pineapple. Orange zest. Sweet cider. Strawberries as well. Later on more bitterness of pink grapefruit. Something mineral as well, whiffs of smoke, lemon juice. Evey time you taste again, some different taste pops up.
    • Finish
      Long. Camomile. Cinnamon. A little pine at the end.
