[October, 2017]  DO NOT OPEN THIS BOTTLE - this is a collector's item only!!!

This tastes like liquid soap and what the hell did the Cadenhead people think when they bottled this back in 1977?  Most probably they were ROFLing when they imagined the face of someone who takes the first sip.  Totally weird...But what happened during production back in 1965?  How came these extremely soapy flavours in a whisky?  I remember the Glenturret 1966 OB https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/14469/glenturret-1966 has a comparable soapiness as has the Glen Garioch 1970 OB https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/90580/1970.  The Edradour 1971 from Moon https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/3974/edradour-1971-mi and the Tobermory from the same Moon-Animals series https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/8790/tobermory-1972-mi are even more extreme in their soapy notes than this one.I had a long chat about this issue with Charlie Smith during the Speyside Whisky Festival some time ago.  He is the most experienced and longest serving stillman in the industry today and was active in the late sixties already.  Actually, he said "I have no glue where such extreme soapiness comes from.  Yes, it was a common practice throughout the whole whisky industry to use soap to reduce the foam in both the washbacks and the wash stills.  We cut little chunks from a big soap cube and simply threw these in the washbacks or through a special opening of the wash still.  It worked very well.  But this soap was a neutral one and had no influence on any taste at all."So, was the mashman or stillman at Glenturret too drunken back in 1965 so they mistook the soap with that from the gent's room?  Did they clean the washbacks with the wrong soap?  Nobody will know for sure anymore, maybe it was all different...

    • Taste
Tasted this one in a cellar with a select group of malt lovers having a Glenturret 1974 tasting. This one was first...nice to have the chance tasted it,but all i do remember was soap,soapy,wax...but worth truying a glenturret 1965
    • Finish
      long and soapy...

    Dammit, this was not
a pleasant surprise! A true punishment having to taste this. An interesting
malt for a meddlesome mother-in-law. Nowadays, this is just a curiosum for
which you will pay around 400 EUR.
    • Nose
      The nose starts
fairly sweet on overripe (actually rotting) apples, a bouquet of flowers and
some mint. But that lasts all about thirty seconds. Then it suddenly turns very
floral… Make that soapy! A wet sock that has been wrapped in a plastic bag for
      too long. Dirty
laundry! Hand soap! A bit of Play-Doh. This is bad. Very bad.
    • Taste
      On the palate it goes
south from the get go. It feels like I have something plastic in my mouth
(albeit spicy, imagine that!) from which some liquid soap dribbles. I do get
some grasses and something of overripe banana and bitter oranges, but the
soapiness overpowers everything and makes my taste buds scream for water to
rinse the bad taste from my mouth.
    • Finish
      The medium long (oh,
      boy!) finish is extremely bitter.
