Had a 70s bottling for the Japanese Market bottled at 43%.

Nose is surprisingly full bodied for a red label. Loads of syrup and caramel. Extremely sweet nose.

The palate is clean and straightforward with notes of liquorice, hard candies, toffee, milk chocolate. Also slight hints of grass.

Finish is medium with notes of coffee beans.

Johnnie Walker Red Label 1970s bottling, 43%.

30ml sample at home Dec 2021.

I like modern Red Label blends so I was interested to try this.

    Mid-tone golden – a dark yellow.

Aroma has slightly burnt crumpet with cut apple, refill oak, a touch of mango behind the char. Fruity yet burnt, with a light doughy breadiness. Hint of stove gas, but just a hint.

Taste is good at the abv. Potent taste but not boozy at all. Salty and bready, very dry salted crackers a touch of bitter oak in the finish – again refill cask vibes.

Quite simple, focused, unfussy. A solid blend.

I’d say the modern one tends to be crystalline-clean with subtle yet complex flavours that build up the more you drink. By contrast, this is a rounded, bready, straight-forward whisky that tastes more malt-driven and that gets a little wearing over time as the bitter oak note builds up. Both types of whisky are enjoyable experiences, but I prefer the modern style. It's amazing how well this has held up over 50 years in the bottle. 3.35/80
