Quite a monolithic beast. When first opened, I was pretty sure this was just another solid but more or less average young heavy peater, elevated by it's natural presentation. And yes, It's simple, it didn't surprise me, but it doesn't get boring as well, and it also doesn't have any flaws worthy of mention, and man, if you add quite some water, and have some patience with your dram, this really delivers!
If this were older and had some clever wood treatment edge to it, this is 90 points territory no doubt.
    • Nose
earthy peatsmoke, creamy lemon, hay, vanilla ice cream with lemon zests, barley sugar, a faint stale wood note, some licorice, after a moment something like grilled corn with mashed potatoes, later a little celery and paprika.

with the addition of 3 tbs of water (4cl) and ~15 min:
turns pretty cloudy, sweetened lemon juice, tar, diesel exhaust fumes and carbolic soap galore, amazing!
    • Taste
peated barley sugar arrival, turns immediately zesty and sweet, lemony, salty, mineral, hugely carbolic, licorice, tar, fumes, lemon icing sugar, '90s lemon Gatorade, some ginger, big and buff body with a good balance, especially considering it's (presumable) age.
    • Finish
earthy peatsmoke, tar, lemon juice, some licorice, some hay, some barley sugar, medium to long.

Must first breathe for about 15 minutes, until its aroma has fully unfolded.

    Nose: pistachios - chocolates

    Taste: dark chocolate

Finish: very long, over 20 minutes. Slightly leathery, then slowly rising, strong smoke and peat.

Class single malt, with a price that is traded well below its value.

Flavor has notes of fruits, flowers, peat and little smoke. Taste has elements of spices and peat. Finish is peaty with spices (pepper?) and a little bit sharp at the end.

IMHO the drink is much better then 8 y.o. "Port Askaig".

Stronger, fresher, younger, most likely Caol Ila.
Alcohol is a lot of pressure. Needs water and warming
    In the glas.

Sharp, powerful, young peater. More of a minerally peatiness. Has some of those ashy elements I expect from a Caol Ila and yet I feel like it is more in the camp of younger, more naked Lagavulins like the 8yo and 12yo. This is great because I’m getting it for one-third the price of Laga12 now. It may not hold up against that monolithic malt, but close enough for the price! Definitely benefits from opening up for a while in the bottle and the addition of water makes it less sharp and more enjoyable. A very solid value for such a high proof Islay.
