Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23yo 40% Consumed at a blind tasting in December 2020, not knowing age, casks, country, distillery etc. BLIND TASTING NOTES: Aroma is almost totally empty, faint apple but airy and nothingy. Builds some extra apple over time. Taste is watery and light, faint smoke, no real punch, a very light whisky indeed. Slight bready vibes and some oak. Maybe it's an old bottling of something from the '80s. Tastes a little tired like it might be an old bottle. Speysidey. Bit watery, faint salt and maybe even peat in the finish. To me this tastes like an old bottle of a standard speyside. Maybe an 80s bottling of Glenlivet or some other speyside staple. 2.95/71 OBSERVATIONS POST-REVEAL: I find that Glenfiddich produces solid, clean, approachable whiskies. Any bad casks that find their way into the huge volume of whisky produced do not leave a noticeable impression. On this basis, the idea that a small volume whisky like this was produced to this below-average standard and then marketed as premium seems very unlikely given the quality of casks they must have access to. I can only imagine that this is an anomaly. However, the sample in front of me is what it is. Would be interested to re-try if the opportunity presented itself. WHISKYBASE OBSERVATION: there are 9 separate entries on Whiskybase for the same product, all at 43% ABV. My notes taken at the time state that the sample was 40% ABV.
