Whisky Reviews for Blair Athol 1989 SV

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.43 points

  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Lies rather on the woody barrel side. The oak note dominates and pushes the fruity notes a little into the background. Overall, very delicious but with a view to the offered in terms of age and price no large bottles candidate.
    • Nose
      89 89
fresh and fruity; sweet; bright fruit basket (apple, peach, pineapple); Honey; slightly floral; a little hay; delicate oak, soft and round - alcohol well integrated
    • Taste
      88 88
soft and sweet; light fruity fruit basket but less fruity than in the nose; citrus; peppery-spicy oak note dominates more and more over time in the mouth; Sawdust; getting dry
    • Finish
      86 86
slightly dry; tingling spicy oak (slight hint of tannins) again very dominant; peppery; subtle fruit notes

    Yellow gold.
    Nice color.

    He smells strongly.
    Fruity, barrel notes.
    Dried fruit, plums, sawdust, apples.
    Also some glue, wood glue.

Spicy in the mouth, the wood notes predominate.
    Laurel and hay.
The focus is on the wood.
    Not much more.
You don't taste the age either.

I'm glad I only had one sample.

  5. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Not my kind of whisky. It is relatively fresh with herbs and spices and also quite woody. Somehow expected more from that.
Nothing I need a big bottle of.
    • Nose
First, notes of fresh, juicy branches with leaves. Hedge trimming. Herbal and spice notes. Also cucumber with dill. With a little hand warmth you can also get fruit. But are more apple and pear.
After the first sip and with a little water, more fruit. The cucumber disappears.
    • Taste
Only relatively oily and sweet. Herbal honey. A little apple compote. After that, proper spice / spiciness of the oak along with citrus notes. Shower rods. Also ginger. A very light memory of juniper.
    • Finish
It tingles for a while and gets drier. Pear dish. Green tea. Some hops. Sharpness too.

  6. Ing Tretti scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose

Dry, sawdust, mint, wood, tinned peaches, some violets. Quite complex, but sort of "caskey".

Update: Second try on another day: Fresh cut pineapples with mint. Tinned peaches, fruit salad. Much better now.

Update: Another try: Doesn't really gain much from further oxidation.
    • Taste
      84 84
Very wood driven. No wax. No herbs. Not much of Blair Athol's distillery character left. The cask dominates the malt. Not balanced at all.

Update: The wood is too strong. Bitter tannins in domination of the spirit.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Oak, Tannins and dry.
