Very special, but also very good.
    Only, not good.

A light and floral nose, but quite bitter and tannic in taste and finish. Water helps shifting the bitterness to a more fruity experience, eventually making this a bottling I actually do like. The €170 release price is clearly over the top though. It's not worth buying an entire bottle.

A light and fresh fruitiness, somewhat tropical, also pretty floral. Green apple, pear, peach, pineapple and a little citrus. Initially it's a bit of a shy nose for a 23 year old Nevis. Starts opening up after a while with the addition of some drops of water.
Mild and sweet nuttyness, a bit like marzipan though more almondy (almond paste), vanilla cream, mint and also subtle wood spices like clove, allspice and mild pepper.
    • Taste
      88 88
Initially pretty aggressive on alcohol. Quite tannic and dry. Water brings out an oily creaminess and more of the fruits like peach, bitter orange and grapefruit. Also overbrewed tea with remaining bitter oak spices and pepperiness.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long: bitter orange and grapefruit, a sparkling bitterness, clear and lingering oak wood with clove, allspice and pepper.

The sherry butt used must be 3rd of 4th fill, the colour is rather light. But it fits the whisky perfectly, it's a high class dram!
    • Nose

A nice and layered nose! Ripe fruits (peach, pineapple, honeydew melon), a bit floral and mineral, a touch of chocolate. A hint of smoke, and it's a bit dusty and farmy, but it lacks the dirty metallic nots that many Ben Nevis share.
    • Taste
      91 91
Oliy and quite salty. It's again very fruity, on the tropical and sour side this time: lime, passion fruit, soursop and pineapple. It had a spicy kick too (chili pepper?) and fresh mint leaves that are balanced by dusty and musty 'mature malt' notes. Finally a hint of smoke rounds off this gorgeous palate.
    • Finish
      89 89
A long and intense finish with tropical fruits and sour candy (zure matten) followed by some vanilla and greenish notes. Lingers on leather and a touch of smoke.

    Tropical fruit explosion, excellent!

Pine tree and wax and also ripe fruit. Lots of tannins and also juicy fruit. Not the most logical combination.
Cooked apple with cloves, cardamon and some cumin. Autumn leaves, green tea and anise.
Back to the sweet side with honey, strawberry and powdered sugar with forest fruit.
Almonds, pine cone and wet dirt. Milk chocolate covered marshmellows with citrus fruit.
By now this must seem a very contradictional review, but this is a malt with two faces.
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily and full on the palate. Big and broad as well. Peaches from a can. Fresh lemons and apples followed by a ripe melon.
      Dry tea and orange skin.
With water much more smoother, but also more standard.
    • Finish
      89 89
Remains chewy and heavy on a long finish. Oranges, lime and othe citrus fruit in combination with cloves and ginger. Spices and a herbal garden with parsley and thyme.

Eagle owl, lemon, grapefruit, furniture polish, muesli, little depth, light fruity, restrained nose.

Strong start, dry, grapefruit, lemon, bitter, own oak notes.

The end is bitter, long, lemony.

This Nevis doesn't suit my taste.
