[December, 2019] A quick review of a small sample only...

...which I flushed down the drain after a few small sips. It is sulphur-spoiled - what else should I say? You know, such drams are just disgusting ... to me.

Nose

The colour is amber and the nose offers a slightly sulphur-spoiled but otherwise shy and completely unimpressive sherry profile. It is of interest only if you like to sniff at spent matches...

Taste

The taste is bitter on sulphurous and wooden notes, after some chewing the sherry breaks through finally. But I cannot enjoy it, sorry. A dram for drinkers who are not sensitive to the ingredient of the devil...

Finish

The initial mouthfeel is sulphurous-scurfy - hence disgusting (to me). The finish is long due to the sulphur only - hence disgusting (to me). A dram to forget.

This sherry cask matured Benrinnes impresses with its complex variety of aromas - from powerful sweetness to warming spices to dry chocolate notes. On the palate a wonderful mouthfeel, which leads to a never-ending finish. A whisky from a sherry butt that was bottled at the optimum time, at the peak of its maturation. A very special pleasure experience indeed.

Nose

The nose immediately takes on notes of sweet malt and dark fruits, such as figs and plums, followed by blood orange, chocolate biscuits and a wonderful sherry aroma. Then spicy aromas like cinnamon, oak and fine tobacco are noticeable, whereby the alcohol appears slightly peppery, but does not dominate at all.

Taste

Intense, sweet and warm on the palate with a complex variety of aromas. Again juicy oranges, plums, raisins and sherry notes, accompanied by warming spices like cinnamon, white pepper and a touch of oak. Becomes creamier with deep chocolate notes and a hint of coffee reaching to the finish.

Finish

The finish is long and initially spicy. Then again creamy sweetness with fruit jam and brown sugar, followed by dark chocolate and a fine hazelnut flavour.

With water: The addition of a few drops of water makes this single malt much spicier in the nose with hazelnut, oak and cinnamon, accompanied by a sherry sweetness and malty notes. Lively, even tangy on the palate with juicy orange, pepper and oak. Sweeter with fruity notes, sherry, brown sugar and chocolate. The finish is long, sweet and warming, becoming much drier towards the end with oak, tobacco and coffee notes.

I like him!
If I had looked in here beforehand and then considered buying it, I probably would not have bought it.
I am extremely vulnerable to sulfur in the whisky. Very small quantities are enough. I absolutely do not like it. I did not find sulfur here. Instead, a wine note that could be associated with sulfur. I think it's great.
This is definitely not a sherry bomb. Smells and tastes a bit thin and alcohol is clearly noticeable. A bit like molasses. It gets much better with a drop of water.
Sweet, bubbly, vinous .... I can't say more at the moment.

Should be a refill butt (which I tend to look out for), but not really a good one here. Too much spice from the cask. No balance there at all. I like some sulphur as extra, but without almost any fruityness like here, it just piles on the spices even more. Especially the nose disappoints because of this.

Somehow it doesn't suit me. The wood notes are too crude for me. In addition, I do not like the type of sharpness, because it is somewhat intrusive.
I don't have to have it again.

Nose

At the beginning you can feel the alcohol and the malt looks younger than it is. On the nose, it is primarily wood and less sherry. However, the wood notes don't seem particularly elegant to me. Rather dull. Dry tree bark. Spices. Grain. Removes incense. Tobacco. Fruits are rather heavily dried plums and orange peel.

Taste

Now surprisingly sweet in the mouth. Forest honey. Coupled with the expected spice and also clear peppery sharpness. Roasted aromas. Rather dry wood notes. Sour grapes. Orange peel again.

Finish

The sharpness fades away slowly. A bit of bitterness reminiscent of cocoa. Shower sticks. Coffee.

pure too thin and too alcoholic. Mouth and nose gain a lot with water, the finish is different, but not necessarily better. A decent refill sherry whisky that just doesn't work in cask strength and unfortunately tends to be average. Too bad.

Nose

the alcohol stings easily, you can see a lot of fruit and also nice sherry, less than expected. With water the sherry sweetness becomes more distinctive, spice notes, also some juniper, wet wood, the sherry is there, but a sherry bomb is different. The fruit notes recede a little behind the now slightly caramel sweetness.

Taste

pure a quite violent, peppery feeling, sweet fruity, with a little sherry. Nice tart chocolate notes with water, oak, some sherry in the background.

Finish

here is a little more sherry, also oak, quite spicy and fruity, the sweet note floats with it. A very peppery finish with water, more bitter than pure, but also some nice oak notes.
