The mouthfeel is a bit thin but otherwise it is quite easy drinkable despite the rather strong peat and smoke
    • Nose
      86 86
Peaty, smoky, nutty, woody, nutmeg, cloves, some herbs, little kippery, hints of leather and rubber
    • Taste
      85 85
More peaty, smoky, juicy, little sweetness, spices
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long, warm, peaty, smoky, balanced, notes of black tea

  2. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Tastes like a sherried Laphroaig, integration of sherry and peat is well balanced, peat is quite muted though, nicely drinkable

The first time I was surprised by this (Ben Bracken 12, 10, 8) whisky was the day when my nose and palate became acquainted with it. Surprise for a big plus. I was convinced that each version of this drink would be nice to me. Unfortunately, the 32YO version was very pale for me, despite the highest price of all BBs. Today I'm "debuting" in my BB 16 YO taste buds and I have to say that this debut was amazing!
The smell, taste and general impression are at an excellent level. I don't know why, but BB16 reminds me of Lagavulin. I like it. The price-quality ratio surpasses some much more expensive items.
I only drank a sample, now I have to hunt down the whole bottle .... Absolutely !!!
    • Nose
resin, smoky, smoked, salty, lime peel
    • Taste
delicate, slightly peppery sweet, citrus, a bit of ginger, chocolate
    • Finish
dark chocolate, slightly peppery, smoke from the fire, at the end a bit of a pharmacy, with a bitterly sweet aftertaste

SMOKER, with a good age, but no "skimming" does not have to be for the price either.
    • Nose
      84 84
Wood fire and ash and light fruit notes in the background.
    • Taste
      85 85
      Smoke, ash, fruity.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long finish with citrus fruits, peat smoke and oak aromas.

Aroma: the best thing about this whisky, smoke, maritime notes, iodine, later some lovage

Taste watery, musty, rotten, out of round

    Finish short, dry

Very, very good price / performance ratio - 16 years.
    Smoky, balanced, very tasty.
    • Nose
Phenolic campfire peat smoke with maritime notes, green apples, honey and oak aromas.
    • Taste
Coconut with peat smoke, maritime notes, spices, honey, citrus fruits, oak aromas and a slight spiciness.
    • Finish
Long with citrus fruits, peat smoke, maritime notes, spices, honey, oak aromas and a slight spiciness.

2021-02-07: very good replacement for the Lagavulin 16 - even if it could be a Caol Ila
    • Nose
      87 87
yellow fruity, acidic, close to Lagavulin 16
    • Taste
      88 88
      very close to Lagavulin 16
    • Finish
      88 88

  8. LDB scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Powerful, strong, but not a peat monster, rather a well-behaved, yet unshaved Lagavulin teenie - a very sympathetic malt, especially at that price (just consider how prices for the standard 16yo Lagavulin have soared over the last years). And if you want to get an idea of what Lagavulin used to taste like in the 1990s, buy this one and experience the Islay campfire!

Slightly smoky. Sweet and fruity. Woody finish with a smoky note. Very good for the price.

had no high expectacions of this LIDL whisky. you cant compare it to a lagavulin 16 or something. but its decent enough not to regret the buy, especially at 35€ shipping included. (40€+shipping is too much in my opinion)
the origin islay is as clear as it can be and for me its almost certainly a caol ila.

nose is best, taste alright, body weak, and the finish is barley noticeable. but once again, all in all its more than you can expect with this price and age ratio. I bought it for blending experiments but it is a good sipper too for non professional occasions aka drinking.

decent budget whisky. I probably would buy it again if around 30€.

lidl is doing a good job for the most part with its single malts considering the price. no chill filtration and they could be great stuff, but i doubt that will happen as it is a product for the massmarket.
    • Nose
      85 85
medicinical smoke, no bonfire smoke or earthy tones, its more on that medicinical style. almost instantly I sorted it as a caol ila. with more smelling and for a second, even lagavulin went through my mind but its way to medicinical for that, it lacks those mudddy spicy notes of lagavulin as well.

beside the medicinical notes theres obviously some maturity, but in no way impressive, its just there.
some wood, lemons, leather, thymian, and woodhoney. the nose isnt overly complex but it offers some deepness based on the main flavours.
    • Taste
      83 83
weak and thin arrival, it would have greatly benefited from 46% and no chill filterting. once again strong medicinical notes, accompanied by wood and those citric notes of desinfaction. body is thin as mentioned but nevertheless still a bit oily after some time in mouth.

it lacks something, intensity? character? abv?
propably no chill filtration and more good casks.
    • Finish
      82 82
short for an islay. it almost disapears as soon as you swallowed it altough the strong medicinial flavour survives and coats everything. some oak in the lingering aftertaste.

  12. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Very reasonable, well matured Islay whisky. The smoke is clear but not dominant. I would have wished for dark fruits and ham to perfection, but still a very tasty and inexpensive drop. Buy recommendation.
    • Nose
      87 87
Spicy start, followed immediately by smoke. Clearly pepper and then astonishingly clear speculoos. Later fruit quark and light roasted aromas
    • Taste
      86 86
Amazingly soft and sweet in the beginning. Shortly light fruits, then again spicy and peppery. Smoke too, of course. The alcohol comes in increasingly strong, but is still well integrated.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is medium-long, there is smoke and oak and also a bit of bitterness.

  13. Tangtang_WhiskyYoda scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

very tasty Islay malt. Would guess Caol Ila or Lagavulin, really good for the price
    • Nose
smoky maritime, citrus fruits and herbs. Rauch is a bit reserved, slightly sweet, fruity
    • Taste
light maritime smoke, citrus fruits, slightly sweet, slightly nutty, slightly spicy, later slightly pepper and becoming a bit bitter
    • Finish
nice fruity, sweet, smoky finish, somewhat nutty, maritime notes, somewhat nutty

  14. TomAndIngrid scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The 43% do him good. The finish pulls all the whisky down. What began with a beautiful nose ends bitterly, but there are lovers for that too!
    • Nose
      83 83
Hardly any smoke, there is also some apple left. Dried fruits (raisins, dates, figs and the like) are also noticeable.
    • Taste
      86 86
Fruits, sweetness and smoke get going together and are also harmonious. The aromas are nice and strong. The smoke begins to dominate.
    • Finish
      80 80
The smoke turns into a bitter ash.

    • Nose

Campfire by the sea - warm smoke and a pinch of salt, again slightly medicinal, vanilla and lemon cake with a sweet glaze, some menthol and green wood (fresh broken branches)
    • Taste
      83 83
In the mouth first of all medicinal smoke, a lot of wood, black pepper, vanilla, malty sweetness towards the finish, a lot of warmth from the smoke and the lemon cake
    • Finish
      82 82
The finish is a mixture of peppery wood, sugared lemon and ashy smoke - relatively long for 43%

Had high hopes after the last two Ben bracken 18 and 27... But unfortunately couldn't hold it...Not a bad whisky, just nothing special... Still a solid Islay and probably better than a lot of Islay whisky for 40€. But prefer the Ben bracken 18 (87/88 points) and especially Ben bracken 27 (90+)

  18. Totoro scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Laphroaig (not medical enough), Ardbeg (availability) and Kilchoman (age) can be ruled out. If it should be a Bowmore, it would be a very smoky and unusual one (but there is also one). The light farm or stable note reminds me of peated laddies and / or bunnahabhains (although I have no idea whether the former gave up barrels or distillate or how the latter turned out at that age). In terms of sweetness, it could well be a dirty - so also rather unusual - Lagavulin, or just a Caol Ila, which is probably the most likely.

No matter how you decide the guesswork: very tasty, tasty and round, and definitely more than okay for the money.

Edit: after trying several times, I type on Lagavulin, and increase from 85 to 86 points. A real bargain for the quality.

    • Nose
      84 84
Smells of wood fire and ashes, medically, sea salt. Some acidity resonates with the smell. Sweet vanilla cakes, some mint (menthol) and light fruit notes in the background.
    • Taste
      83 83
Smoke, ashes, fruity, the mentholhaltig remains in the mouth (only intense) campfire on the beach.
After a long time comes salt and algae.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium length, light wood notes (rather licorice), salty
