It's been a while since I had the last Arran in my glass. After several attempts (old core range and independent bottlings) I had checked off this distillery as too unspecific, indifferent and a little lacking in character.
This 18yo makes me waver again in my (pre -?) Judgment: aroma-like build-up of tension, rounded off without being boring, tasty on the tongue, long finish. In addition natural color and non chill filtered - a whisky that makes you want to explore it for a whole bottle.

Blackberry jam, black currants, spiced plum jam (Aachener Pflümli), pepper, nutmeg. Very tasty mixture, looks fresh despite the dark fruits and spices.
    • Taste
      88 88
Berry mix with almonds, hazelnuts, toffee and hazelnut chocolate. Cold coffee, chopped chestnuts. Earthy, loamy with leather and tobacco leaves. Dried plums, raisins, dried figs, bay leaves, nutmeg, paprika. The spices are added late after the berries and almonds / nuts have already gone.

Medium to long, creamy. Soft without being irrelevant. For a long time you have something of the flavors from the palate, nothing breaks here.

I suppose consistency in profile with the previous (2016) version was not a criterion, as it's completely different. It's all about the sherry. Not better, just very different.
    • Nose
Blueberry, hazelnut, caramel and nutmeg. It mellows down after a while.
    • Taste
Two types of sherry in contest. There's a robust, spicy side in the front and a lighter side of red wine gum behind it.
    • Finish
      Mocha, hazelnut, nutmeg

What a nice expression from Arran. I find it balanced with the sherry and the spirit. Not dark sherry but elegant one, balanced with the citrus character of the Arran spirit. I really adore the amaretti biscuits note that goes through the whole journey especially on the nose and the palate. Really nice, classy and pleasing dram. For the price 100% recommended.
