Absolutely underground filling. Only flowers, fruit basket, complex spicy notes, and no trace of oak bitterness. What shoud that? Zwinkersmiley

This is a real gentleman. It's perfectly balanced and smooth like silk. At SMWS then probably would put them into the "old and dignified" area. The other commentators are right, there are now edges or wow factors with this one, but I would not got for a 27 year old, when I look for those. Its wonderfully complex with no overwhelming struggles of and flavours. The finish is very long and pleasant. Did I mentioned smooth? Add water as much as you like too, it's even getting better. Love it.

If the choice is between a Balvenie teaspooned with Glenfiddich and a Glenfiddich teaspooned with Balvenie, I'd put my money on the latter.

Initially, indeed some alcohol, which gradually morphs into eukalyptus and menthol vapors. Then a slightly tart vegetal note (artichoke), tonic water, and something undefinable, akin to a good brown Tequila. I'd say it's very shy - almost austere - without water. Seems pretty citric as well. With more time in the glass, you get pear skins, pastry, and oaked white wine (Chardonnay?). When water is added, herbs and honey rise up (if you know Ricola cough drops, you get the idea) and the whole becomes, for lack of a better word, "warmer" and more inviting, as well as noticeably more fruity. Still very understated, though.

Pretty zesty, zingy, and fresh for its 27 years, even a bit sharp. I wouldn't like more than a sip of this undiluted. When it's brought down to a more comfortable drinking strength, you get hay, honey, bitter herbs, passionfruit, sugared lime and - even when "watered-down" - quite a bit of spicy ginger bite on the tongue. I'm missing some of the softer and rounder old-age flavors that bottlings like this usually display. This remains pretty severe, tart and "vertical": a typical older ex-bourbon-wood bottling where the cask didn't do much to sweeten or round off the edges of the spirit. Still a good whisky if you like the style, but I can't shake the feeling that I can have the same experience at younger ages and a lower price. I also have an issue with the heat on the palate, which water can't really tame (always a bad sign).

Initially continues the bitter aspects of the palate, but then it shifts and becomes increasingly sweet. Ends up in seriously honeyed territories. Caramel wafers, maple syrup... Unexpectedly good.

  5. Bam scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

I like it well, beautiful, well-set and at the same time very citrus-fresh whiskey.
    • Nose
A great, light fruit basket comes towards me, oranges, peaches, green apples, apricot, pineapple, all interwoven with a strong hint of vanilla and brown sugar. Some tobacco and milk coffee. The whole is carried by a fine floral note.
    • Taste
strong start, silky mouthfeel. First there is a full pot of lemon, really sour, then there are sour apples and sweet peach. Honey and garden herbs are added, as well as a nice oak note.
    • Finish
long finish, lots of lemon, coffee and herbs. And some nougat.

  7. Northern&Isles scored this whisky 98 points Expert Senior

Extremely tasty, maximally fruity Balvenie, or Burnside.
Maybe not overly complex, but extremely sweet and soft, round, mild, balanced.
Elegance and finesse are the main features as well as a bundle of fresh fruits.
    Great.
