A 12-year old vault edition (what we call "black labeled SMWS" in China) is, to me, a proof that the distillery behind has been over-hyped...Luckily, the dram here was of high quality, but more to say was being interesting.
I bought this during a sharing session for a flash-sale (1 sample for less than 1 Euro, geez). Nonetheless, they were also offering the 33.139, which is, according to the official tasting notes, more likely to be the dram I have tonight...

Loads of salty spices, with dried ginger, cloves, galangal, and crushed pepper. Wood polisher, along with fresh and intense oregano and basil. On the transition there came oxidised apple and ripen peach. The peat smoke fought its way through the spices, also bringing old wood, bandage (reinforced with aeration)and brine. The aeration also brought intense jasmine tea to the nose. Water would brought out the fresh lemon zest.

Armagnac-like with spiciness and woodiness. Also sooty, with crushed raw peanuts, peppermint, oregano, and restrained peat. The attack from pepper and saline as well as lemon juice was also impressive. a hint of rubber came at last. The body was outstandingly big and robust.
    • Finish
      88 88
Drying and pleasantly smoky. Pepper, impressively briny, extinguished wood, cardboard, used tire rubber. Mouth watering and menthol cooling.

The character of the moderately dark Sherry and ardbeg is balanced, dark body, nuts, good acidity

  4. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

The nose is powerful, ample, I would rather say a little slap on the cheek, but without excess, it remains pleasant. The Sherry is intense, with cranberries, currants, blueberries, married to an oily peat, plastic, gravel, nails. Thick smoke. We never tire. Mouth immediately very spicy, cumin, paprika, nutmeg, prunes, raisins, varnished wood. Abundant red fruits, raspberries, pomegranate, blackberries. A little soot around the armholes, we're near a good fire. Final atomic, woody, encaustic, charcoal, telluric tremors, shade of apricot.

Nose: Campfire smoke, whiffs of maritime peat, barbeque sauce, intensely greasy and meaty, smoked blackforrest ham, roast pecans, maple syrup, some spicy vanilla notes (american oak?), mint julep, vapo rub, dried orange peel, some rancio, an old dried up humidor. Its an almost perfect sherried Ardbeg nose. The balance between cask and spirit is brilliant. The high ABV is barely noticable.

    Taste:
Bold arrival on tar, peat, anise seed, crushed black pepper, sea salt, ginger powder, dark chocolate and mint. Its a little too pungent and alcoholdriven for my tastebuds tonight, so I add a generous dash of water to bring it down to around 50%. The nose gets meatier and the sherry goes upfront, with blood oranges, cloves and cinnamon. Once diluted, the taste is more balanced: Salty peat, soy sauce, seaweed, barbequed pork, dark chocolate, old leather, tar, throat lozenges, mint candy, kids cough medicine and menthol cigarette smoke. Best Ardbeg I had in a long while. /91

Notes von der SMWS Website: https://de.smws.com/a-thigh-slapping-dram

"Nose - brandy snaps, cafe noir biscuits, dark toffee, Oddfellow sweets, liquorice, treacle, molasses and crispy mackerel skin grilled over peat. Palate - visceral sweet smoke, burnt twigs, raisins, dark chocolate and Lapsang Souchong - a mouth-filling, lip-smacking, cockle-warming, thigh-slapping dram. The nose turns sweeter with water - maple syrup and brown sugar - but there's a coal-fire in a wood-panelled room or a bucket and spade on the beach by a tarry driftwood bonfire. Now the palate balances maple candies, treacle toffee and sugar-coated fennel seeds with pipe dottles, medicinal notes and tying leather thongs with your teeth - you can provide the back story! "

The whisky is already striking due to its extremely intense coloring. I would like to call it "rehaugen-braun". ;-) I didn't even know this distillery.
The nose is no less impressive. What the optics indicate can also be found in the "olfactory".

The most exciting thing for me: the taste. What is going on is really great. Sweet, bitter, salty, smoky ... trallalla - or: "Holger the tooth fairy"!

Burnt gum, licorice, juicy plums and dark tobacco. Fish, salt and lemon. Dried herbs. A really intense pleasure, really thick soup!
