I don't even know what else can be original to write about Lagavulin 16 yo ?! An exemplary classic malt! I appreciate, love and always keep this whisky at home.
    • Nose
Thick, heavy, infused with hints of a dying fire, pine forest, sea, iodine, spices and sweet fruity notes of plum jam and wine.
    • Taste
Oily, heavily smoked, salty, peppery, with hints of iodine, bread and prunes.
    • Finish
Consistent, long, warming, with tones of salt, iodine, spice, soft smoke, dark chocolate and dried fruit.

On the nose, the first hit is sweetness, vanilla, smoke, toffee, smoke, alcohol breaking through causes a delicate pepperiness. After a while, sweet fudge again. The taste is mainly peat, ash from the fire, slight pepperiness and oak. Long finish, bonfire smoke, cigarette, slightly bitter.

Not an overly complex single malt, but an extremely drinkable one that is easy to enjoy. Value (£49) : 7/10
    • Nose
A very enjoyable nose, well balanced with peat and sweet sherried notes. Sweet butterscotch and salted caramel up front. An earthy peat with slightly iodine and maritime-like notes of seaweed. Dried dates and plums. Some apples and pears with some milk chocolate. Savoury smoked meats and old leather. Cinnamon, nutmeg and more oak spices.
    • Taste
A slightly thin mouthfeel which knocks back the points a touch. The flavours themselves are good though. Raisins, pears and butterscotch. Some vanilla sweetness and sea salt. Lapsang soughing tea with herbal notes of aniseed and more baking spices. Some dark tobacco notes Earthy, dirty peat notes and more savoury meats. No burn and extremely drinkable.
    • Finish
Medium in length. Slightly ashen smoke wrapped around more sweet toffee notes and dark chocolate here. More of that lovely tea note here. Some oak spice lingers.

    Incredible whisky!
This hateful smokiness envelops him so pleasantly.
The aroma is a separate topic, something wonderful, the taste is soft, the aftertaste is pleasant, just the same harmony at all stages. No alcoholism, nothing sticks out anywhere, the balance is perfect!

An absolute if not THE classic par excellence. For me it embodies the elegant Islay classic of the Scottish whisky industry and it cannot by far deny its origin. Nice maritime character paired with fruity notes and a slight sherry influence. I had tried it a few years ago and it felt stronger and a lot more sherry influence. Unfortunately, I find it a bit watered down and the barrels no longer seem to be the best. Nevertheless, it is a malt that one always likes to have in the glass and that is also a lot of fun. An absolute must-try whisky.

    My rating system:
    100-95: Exceptional whiskys
    80-94: top whisky
    50-79: standard whisky
    0-49: flops
    • Nose
      77 77
Fresh with a little eucalyptus and fisherman's friend, light mint, behind it slight sulfur notes, burned fireworks, the maritime influence is clearly noticeable, salty, washed up algae, campfire smoke, charred oak trunks, smoked mackerel, black forest ham, burnt caramel oil, machine fat, old brûlée , but also light fruit notes in the background are reminiscent of multivitamin juice, cherries, cinnamon, liquorice notes, slightly stronger notes of dill and parsley, lemongrass
    • Taste
      75 75
Light campfire smoke, Black Forest ham, maritime notes, iodine, grilled salmon and prawns, grated orange peel that were lightly grilled, burnt caramel popcorn, cinnamon, liquorice, cherries, plum jam, light mint and herb notes, a little dill, light parsley and thyme Burnt oak, perhaps also grilled mackerel on a smoking board, with light cedar notes
    • Finish
      73 73
The finish is characterized by slightly bitter and smoky notes, the smoke from the campfire and the fruity orange notes remain, the finish is medium-long and drier, the maritime notes continue to appear here, iodine, algae and slightly fishy notes of seafood
