It needs a lot of time and air in the glass, then this musty note for me disappears and a nice sherry profile develops.
Nice taste of wood and fruit. Great, long finish.
Looks a lot older to me overall. I like it a lot and with a little time the Bunnahabhain character will come out.

This has to be one of the best Bunnahabhain's I have had. The combination of sweetness, full mouthfeel and spice is fantastic.

Power. Nice sweetness, then comes the sweet, fruity PX sherry. Plum, sweet berries. Also spicy aromas and a little smoke.
    • Finish

Medium to rather long. Leathery, berry-fruity, waxy dried fruits. Slight bitterness of oak.

Blatant disappointment… .. lovage lovage sweet sweet no more no less I like to join hs305.
For 50-60 € great tasty standard PX.
But at the level of the marketing and some reviews not to be understood, that's really the disappointment since I've been enjoying whisky… .. !!!!

on a later tasting of this dram, i am going to readjust my rating a bit, so this time tasting it with a cleaner pallet, instead of after a cask strength Bowmore and cask strength Caol Ila...

now it is just too hard and heavy cask driven, too much PX. however the passionfruit and pineapple are pleasant which shimmer through.

Good malt but imho overrated as these limited cs Bunnas seem to be. Fat sherry but rather simple all in all. Something for sherry lovers and I would not rejects a pour for sure, but falls short in comparison with good Dronachs for example.

The finish definitely killed the previous ripening time in the case, which is a PX board, exactly my direction, even if the nose requires a bit of tact
    • Nose
The PX influence is clear, sweet, raisins, also tobacco, in addition also Maggi herb, chocolate, the nose looks really fat, also mint, you have to be careful not to smell into it too much, otherwise the nose is only once deaf
    • Taste
oily, wow, full load of PX, roasted aromas, raisins, nuts, very sweet, full-bodied and intense, chocolate, minimal sulfur, a little lemon on the tip of the tongue with a slight acidity
    • Finish
the sweetness remains stubborn, raisins, nuts, a subdued version of the start, then also apple, slightly tart, some wood, dark chocolate

A very pleasant and enjoyable dram. The distillate is indeed almost entirely obscured by the former cask content, but hey at least there's no onslaught of sulfur (ok a little in the finish) or ridiculous amounts of wood tannins, like with other 'modern' sherried malts. Is it still real whisky? In this case I actually don't give a rat's arse. It's first and foremost pretty damn tasty.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet thick sherry, toffee, nutty, chocolate, plum, figs, raisins and cherries, a bit of furniture polish, also a little savory with some allspice.
    • Taste
      89 89
Syrupy with toffee, fudge, treacle and loads of chocolate. Sweet blueberries, figs plum and dried fruits, subtle wood spices.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long and warming: dried fruits, toffee, cocoa, nutty, sweet liquorice, allspice, suddenly ending with a dryish sulfur note.

Damn. This one is sweet... and the PX works really nice with the rest of the spirit.

Nose: neat intermezzo of red fruits. No hints of alcohol
First Mouth: very hard hit from the PX, no distillery character whatsoever... but alot sweetness
Second Sip: aaaah, there it is, the muffy salty bunna style
Finish: incredibly long, but rather PXy

If you enjoy PX, you will enjoy this. Sadly, bottles are overpriced today (paid 140€ to open a split bottle with more or less sample friends :-) )

    Nose
Honeyed baked fruits, chocolate and raisins. It’s intoxicatingly delicious at first sniff. Molasse, dusty hazelnuts and tropical fruits. The chocolate is now creamy milk chocolate... it smells unctuous, creamy and sweet and the alcohol is virtually absent. 24/25

    Palate
So much chocolate, it’s all I can taste at first. It’s truly mouth-coating stuff and the 54.3% abv is felt a little more here than on the nose. The development is great, honey, stewed stone fruits, a little spice, maybe white pepper is there too and finally, salted caramel to round things up. 23/25

    Finish
A medium-long finish that’s very creamy and honeyed. It leaves a Werther’s Original taste on my tongue. 22/25

    Value and presentation
Like all official bottling coming out of Bunnahabhain, the presentation is perfect. It’s un-chillfiltered and free of added colour and the information is written on the bottle and tube. Distillation and bottling dates are also there which is nice. The value is a little harder to quantify, the 168$ CAD price tag is justified but at under 7000 bottles made with very few of them making their way to Canada and most of those somehow falling into the lap of flippers before they even hit the shelves meant that this 168$ bottle became a 400$ bottle the very week it came out. It’s not Bunnahabhain’s fault but it still factors into the equation. 23/25

    Total score
    92/100

    • Taste

Punchy, oily, liquorice, menthol, sherry, quite some sweetness, more dried fruits, xmas spice
    • Finish

Deep and rich, full bodied sherry notes. Lots of dried fruits, like figs, prunes, dates. Sour plum, leathery. Pretty creamy and confectionary too. Lovely Ikea wood furniture, brand new cardbox. Old and dusty library. Very complex nose.
    • Taste
      90 90
Thick and sweet and tasty. Again full of dried fruits, and preserved fruits. Exactly what you expect after the nose. Rich and deep and flavors.
    • Finish

Mouthwatering sweet. Long fruit notes with a very pleasant dryness. The finish compliments the palate almost perfectly.

[February, 2019] Bunnahabhain had a lot of excellent releases until the most recent whisky boom started but most people ignored this fine distillery, sadly. Then they started to release dirty and heavily spiked (bold but simple) drams and all of a sudden Bunna is hyped. Sounds strange? It is, but this is the modern whisky "Zeitgeist", finally. Most drinkers do not invest the time to explore and enjoy a dram in detail anymore and rather go for the quick "hit and run" impression....

...like with this release. I wonder how people can nose and taste a complex malt profile out of this fortified sherry drink - I can not, to be honest (yes, the sherry profile is rich and complex, but this is just the sherry and not the whisky). Just buy a bottle of good sweet sherry and add some neutral alcohol - I promise you get a comparable taste for one tenth of your bucks - oh, and do not forget to add some spent matches before drinking...
    • Nose
      84 84
The colour is deep gold and the nose offers exactly such a spiked modern sherry profile. I can not detect any malt-driven aroma here - this could be any distillate. Hey, what is great about such a nose? No, I do not want to impose my preferences on others and everybody should enjoy whatever he or she likes - but I will certainly never appreciate such cheap thrills...
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is just about fortified sherry - simply add some industry alcohol to a sweet sherry wine and you will get exactly such a profile. By the way, this would be much cheaper than spending a hell of money on a whisky without any whisky flavour at all. Of course, this is drinkable and it tastes rather good (I like a glass of sherry from time to time, too), but is this whisky? Not sure...
    • Finish
      84 84
The dram arrives bold but neither warming nor coating on the palate with a minor hot feeling. The finish is of medium length only and again completely sherry-driven. Water turns the nose punchier and both taste and finish bitter which happens often with heavily sherried drams. Oops - and it releases some minor sulphurous notes (matchbox) that were just distant whiffs with the neat dram...

This is enjoyable, but to me not a stunner. A little expensive when it first came out at retail ($185cnd) for what it is, but now on the secondary market I find it way over priced.
    • Nose
      88 88
A very nice nose, no heat at all, some cooked fruit, milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very spicy on the palate, lot of flavour and tasty, but comes across as younger than it is. A little harsh in the mid plate with some bitterness on the backend. All the fruit is in the mid-palate.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Medium, spicy with some bitterness.

Nose: Sherry with raisins and cherries in chocolate
Taste: From the first sip, you can feel the sweetness with a slightly added touch. Then you have sweetness with a small amount of honey. In the period of taste approaches, light dryness will appear.
Rating: 89 | 100 Finish pretty long sweet candy with an accent of light honey. Here again, the position for lovers of sherry climates. I liked the whisky!

  38. Whisky&Art scored this whisky 89 points Member Senior

    Really a good whisky.
    Nose:
The interesting thing in my opinion is the sweetness of Sherry PX in conjunction with the maritime touch.
    Taste: Salty, licorice, sweet
    Finish: Long and warm, dry
I think he has a medium body and the texture is slightly oily. The alcohol is not too intense, so not disturbing.
The finish is long and warm with plenty of sherry, nut tones and salt. Reminds me of seafood, oysters ...
    A great drop

My first association - "Nomad Outland Whisky" in CS - the same intense fruity sweetness of raisin and chocolate in the end just with much more power. A tasty treat that would be worth 60-70 € - many thanks to JungleDram for the sample.
With the current prices I prefer to buy the Nomad and take bigger sips - so really Bunna DNA is not much left.

The price I would have rated earlier with 50 points - when that still went. Does not work anymore - so the price is not included in my score.

Red apple. Apple compote even. Cherry, raisin and liquorice. Initially a whiff of sulphur, pretty much inevitable with sherried Bunnas, but not for long. With water there's some anise.
    • Taste
Allsorts liquorice (Engelse drop), apple compote, cherry, prune, fig and marshmallow. A little mint when adding water.
    • Finish
Apple compote, sweet liquorice, cherry, raisin, plum and fig.

  43. St. Pauli scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The nose was good, but the taste and finish are a bit schizofrenic: very sweet on the one side, and bitter on the other. I can't say I'm impressed overall.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Colour: light brown/autumn leave
Appearance: hardly any tears, coats to the glass

Dried dark fruit, earth, dunnage warehouse, wet wood in decay, runny toffee, chocolate, yet also minerals (wet beach pebbles) and a fresher apple-like note.
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerful yet very sweet, with treacle, fig tartlets, plum, raisin, chocolate and lots of sugar. Later, some sour orange juice and drying ginger.
    • Finish
      83 83
Long and earthier again (from the sherry cask), with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and an autumn forest. Unfortunately the spice is rather drying (ginger) which is not entirely fitting in the profile.

    Fine whisky.

The color is clearly visible in my sample bottle. A beautiful, dark sherry color.

Then the nose. One word immediately occurred to me. My parents make plum jam themselves. So that. Later also dried plums cooked sweetly sticky, raisins. It is very thick and not much remains of the character of the distillery.

The taste. Thick, sweet dark fruit, again the prunes in the foreground. If you don't like that, skip this one. Other dark sweet fruit notes. Finish. Stays nicely, but not super long. Red fruits emerge after a while, an aftertaste like cherry jam and of course the plums again.

Price. 95 euros is not a small amount. Many people do not think about spending such an amount on a bottle of whisky. Or cannot.

That in itself is a shame, because in this way they miss something wonderful. I don't think the amount I paid for this bottle is too much for what I get in return.

Ordinary tube with an ordinary bottle. Looks neat, but not very special or anything. I do not mind. Better than pay 50 euros extra because a wooden Viking ship has been built around it.

The whisky you have to give time necessarily, because the alcohol in the beginning disturbs massively. Only after a few minutes in the glass do you realize that you have a really nice sherry barrel whisky in front of you. And then he is really delicious too.
    • Nose
intrusive alcohol at the beginning, then malty and very spicy. Still mint and vanilla, only much later after the flight of alcohol fruity with raisins. Add some tobacco. Sulfur. roasted flavors
    • Taste
very sweet, very alcoholic, dark fruits with plums and raisins, Christmas spices.
    • Finish
Medium long finish with strong alcohol, slightly bitter oak and pronounced fruitiness.

  50. Calmar scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

A bomb, a super-saturated, complex and deep aroma that affects the breadth of the range of derivatives, then you think only of whether you can support such a level of taste / finish, cautiously take the first sip - wow, it's just a holiday of some kind, the whole aroma acquires its flavor the embodiment, but not just anyhow, but powerful, concentrated, dense, again - wow, no - WOW.
    • Nose
Open, dry, rich, jam cake, raisins, red fortified wine, then a wave of noble wood is poured - old furniture, a cigar box; cherry jam, dried fruits, fried nuts, polish for furniture, a lot of sweet berry shades - various jams, jams, cakes; Almonds, leavened wort, burnt biscuits.
    • Taste
Saturated, powerful, pastry sweet notes, pepper wave, oak, prunes, raisins, sulphurous mineral notes, metallic sour, very sweet, very powerful.
    • Finish
Sweet, spicy, warming, almonds, raisins, baklava, nuts, churchjela, cumin, kvass, hydrogen sulfide mineral water.

  51. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Fantastic Bunna from the PX barrel, the sweetness with hints of autumn leaves and salt are perfectly combined.
    • Nose
Prunes, initially almost too intense with alcohol, it then flies, but everything remains pretty dark and quite closed, takes a lot of time and some water, then come beautiful cinnamon and Christmas flavors, camphor, nutmeg, raisins, Christmas stollen, chocolate and chestnuts Interestingly, these fine notes of sea salt and also some hay / grass, creme de cassis, slightly dusty
    • Taste
Raisins, stollen, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, creme de cassis, moist hay, beautiful leather, old chest of drawers, burnt creme brulee, prunes, currants, dark chocolate, a little bacon, lots of tannins, really just a touch of salt flakes in between

N- Monk fruit, warm chocolate coated ripe cherries, toffee, then scents of muddy beaches, burnt sweet barks, liquorice and bright syrup with breezy sea air. Highly fragrant and complex but not messy, superbly layered and evolving. Bonus:- some precious old malt effect drifting at the back, walnut, malt barn with sweet crushed pink peppercon, Mind blowing stuff and probably one of the best LR tasted so far this year.

P- Creamy treacle shows up with white fruits and hints of plum. Generous offering and well integrate delicious flavours on a fine strength, at great balance. Aroma and taste in harmony with the dark side of the whisky.

F- Long, dried fruit laden with waxiness that hardly to come-by on most modern whisky, pleasantly sweet. Trust that an exceptional old oaks been use for this baby. A whisky like this make writing the tasting note so easy.

Water: No, he definitely does not need it. He gets a little sweeter with water. Almost too cute. I would leave it out

Conclusion: As a finish, I would not call this mermer, rather Double Maturation. The 3 years in probably quite humid PX barrels have done a great job. What a sherry board that still leaves room for the distillery character with maritime and slightly dirty notes. I might have limited the finish to 1 year, then there would have been some room left for other flavors. But those who like PX Sherry will love this whisky.
    • Nose
Nose: A sherry board with salty and maritime inlays. Ripe plums, dried dates, juicy figs, nuts, salty caramel and balsamic vinegar. With some malt and dirty / earthy notes, as you can only find in Bunna, very dark sweetness of cane sugar and coffee / mocha with a dash of cream. Also some spices such as cardamom, nutmeg and especially cinnamon can be found. While the first nose is still very alcoholic, this flies completely after 10 minutes. Very round and quite complex
    • Taste
Taste: Full on with PX notes of dates, dried figs, salty caramel, cinnamon and some oak spice
    • Finish
Finish: Again, these very intense PX notes with great dark sweetness that does not want to end. Plum compote! The finish is beautiful long, the oak very reserved and well integrated with the alcohol.

These are the kind of whiskies that I find hard to pin a score on.
    • Nose
Big notes of balsamic vinegar, as well as Demerara sugar and marzipan. It has a fun, slightly farmier side as well, with hints of straw, and touches of malt. But the PX influence is dominant, as further notes of raisin, blackcurrant and cranberry demonstrate.
    • Taste
Oily, syrupy stuff, and really big on the Pedro Ximenez flavours. Are we sure this is just a finish, and not an entire maturation? Makes you think they 'forgot' to empty the last few liters of the sherry out of the cask. Fudge, black forest gateaux, brown sugar and thick, dark, salted caramel. Some balsamic here as well, but man, this is almost as if they added some sugar.
    • Finish
A hint of cracked black pepper corns, to go with all of the above. Medium in length.

Wonderful Bunnahabhain. Highly recommended! Not overly complex, but a beautiful sherry monster as you can only wish for.
    • Nose
Overwhelming!  Sherry matured in a whisky cask. Or was it the other way around? Heavy PX influence. A superb sweetness above all. Behind that freshly baked, warm fruit cake. Overripe, almost fermented plums. Chocolate raisins. A hint of smokiness rounding it up.
    • Taste
Powerfull start. Initially sweet. Again the powerful sherry influence that tickles your tongue. Quite some sulfur actually. Sweet-sour sauce. Lots of spices. Underlined by just the right amount of alcohol. Adorable!
    • Finish
Medium long with the aftertaste of roasted, slightly bitter hazelnuts and milk chocolate.

Wonderful whisky. I especially like the combination of malt and creamy salt caramel that I got on the palate after adding just a tiny bit of water. If you like whiskies that are on the sweeter side, you will love this one.
    • Nose
Plenty of sweet dried fruits, raisins and dark cherries. But wait, there is even more sweetness coming with milk chocolate and salted caramel. Somewhat balanced by hints of walnuts, but yes, it's overwhelmingly sweet.
    • Taste
Syrupy mouth feel with strong aromas of salted caramel and honey, now accompanied by dark chocolate and wooden notes from the cask. It's less sweet now with the 54.8% alcohol content finally showing its presence. A few drops of water take the edge off, revealing creamy toffee and malt.
    • Finish
Long. Sweet with raisins at first, more spicy and malty later.

Lovely dark and sweet Bunna. Around 100 EUR. Recommended! Thanks, Marcel.
    • Nose
Nose carefully, because the first whiff is full of alcohol. Then I get some lovely maritime notes with delicious candied fruit. Think blood oranges, peach, apricot, prunes, raisins and a truckload of fresh figs. Some nuts kick in, pecan and hazel to the fore. Some cooked ham as well, sniffing tobacco and milk chocolate. Dying wood, too. What a beautiful, complex nose!
    • Taste
The arrival is sturdy and spicy, but then it turns very sweet immediately. Prunes, apricots and figs again, but in a wonderful marmalade. No trace of the nuts, but all the more sweetness in the guise of crème brûlée and even some cassis. Wonderfully dark and sweet with a touch of tannins and even a salty edge. Complex on the palate as well. Very luring but dangerously quaffable.
    • Finish
The finish is very long, shows a warm smokiness and remains sweet until the death.

So sherried that it's almost more like a PX sherry than like a whisky. I guess that they've left some sherry in the cask. Caramel, cranberry, blueberry, raisin, orange and that typical Bunna tiny whiff of sulphur. Water releases a nutty side.
    • Taste
Toffee, orange, blueberry, wild cherry, hazelnut and a thin layer of peat.
    • Finish
Toffee, orange, wild cherry and blueberry.

#feinenotes Glass: Riedel Vinum Tasting glass Color: bright amber Nose: The alcohol is present immediately, but disappears after a short time. sugared jelly berries. Light maritime and grassy notes. The sweetness is above everything and is always in the foreground. Milk chocolate. Mild ham. Tannins in the background. Orange zest. Cooked plums with cinnamon. Over time, the maritime notes are becoming increasingly dominant, almost a bit rough and dirty. Anyone who has ever stood on the bridge of Bunnahabhain and inhaled deeply, can safely dream of the flavors of this whisky. The longer you smell the better the alcohol is involved. In the nose, this limited release is already very complex. Palate: the alcoholic power develops portly and very pleasant on the tongue. The cinnamon plums are again clearly visible. Toasted white bread. Creme Brulee and again the sugared jelly berries. Resonance: The sweetness stays long, the alcohol evaporates quickly. Comfortably warm, the whisky rises up the esophagus again. Very pleasant, very complex. Even after writing the conclusion, I have the pleasant taste of prunes in the mouth. Conclusion: Wow! This whisky impressively shows why Bunnahabhain is one of my absolute favorite distillates. I would buy this original bottling again at any time. Shortly after release, I paid 85 €. I am sure that he will find many lovers who are willing to pay more for this, because we have an original bottling with a decent 14 years and a full 54.3% of this whisky is limited to 6768 bottles and allowed to mature in wonderful barrels.

I quite like this whisky. It has full on PX flavours, but it integrates nicely with the Bunnahabhain profile. Well balanced
