Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 2011 ICC

I like the ICC whiskys. So far there was no rivet. But I'm not so sure about "Sister" anymore. An 8-year-old Caol Ila for € 85.00 is an announcement.

But unfortunately this whisky does not meet the requirements. I have now tried five drams, but my opinion does not change.

The whisky looks much younger than an 8-year-old. Very immature. More like four or five years.

Slight smell of smoke, a bit of meadow, vanilla and light tannins.

In terms of taste, alcohol dominates, or, to put it politely, pepper and chili flavors dominate.

When the alcohol has evaporated, slight sweet aromas emerge, but they also fade very quickly.

Sorry ICC, but that was nothing.

"Sister" has to actually be rated together with "Brother". "Brother" is a very fine Caol Ila Whisky. Bourbon cask, 8 years, top craftsmanship! With Sister the difference is the finish with the Chateau Lafite cask. And here comes an incredibly great complexity into play! A fantastic whisky for a more than reasonable price.

In comparison to "Brother", which comes from a Bourbon Cask, the Château Lafite barrel leaves clearly sweet fruit notes. As with "Brother", the following also applies here: a few more years in the (original) barrel would certainly not have hurt.
    • Nose
      83 83
Fruity first impression, dominated by light grapes and canned mandarins. Mild smoke, some furniture polish. Tropi Frutti gummy bears. From time to time slightly stinging.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet grapes, raisins, strawberry cake. Dry, light smoke note. Tasty, makes up for some of the rather weak nose. Cocoa powder, ground coffee. Licorice, violet pastilles, nutmeg, pepper. Increasing smoke, fresh asphalt.
    • Finish
      84 84
Relatively short finish, slightly dry. Initially with an impression of unpeated, he is now adding more to the smoke entry. Still light fruits, some menthol.

The longer the bottle is open, the better it will be. Freshly opened, it wasn't nearly as good
