Strong Caol Ila with a beautiful fruit note, which could perhaps have been given a little more time in the barrel.

Cool smoke and a hint of lemon. Freshly sliced pear, applesauce. Banana in the background. At first a slightly metallic impression, which disappears after a short time and with the appearance of the banana. Lime juice, salt, nutmeg.

Smoked fruits flood the mouth. The smoke cool and strong, the fruits sweet and velvety. Mashed bananas, pear and apple sauce. In addition toffee, coffee beans, dry wood, liquorice, pepper, chili powder, herb mixture.

Although he has a pretty strong start, he doesn't last very long. It buckles very quickly, delivering only cold smoke and bright fruits. Herb.

I just really love to return to this dram, every time it brings me something else. I really like the fact it is a straight forward Coal Ila, briny, meaty, but it is not in your face, like an Ardbeg or a good Ledaig. My bet it was a really good refill cask and it just gave the spirit a nice rest, just long enough.

It is strong at 57.7 abv, but drinkable. A few drops of water makes this dram just perfect though. The lovely smells come at you from the glass.

Weirdly enough, I had the 12, 18 and 25 Coal Ila OB and they all feel small in comparison of this one. It just shows, give us an honest Coal Ila (higher abv, non-chill filtered and no colouring) and it's a very fine dram. Better than Ardbeg or Laphraoig.

Smoke, briny bbq, some nice summer fruits like orange and lemon, lemon zest, mango and in the end some vanilla. The vanilla is not overwhelming though.
    • Taste
      88 88
The summer bbq smoke with some barbecued overripe bananas with a kick of chilis and peppers. After that oranges and lemon. A hint of rosemary, bay leaf and some mint.

Not a super impressive finish, but long enough to get a kick out of it. I really like it, the tones of the bourbon cask come up, with slight notes of vanilla, spicy oak and green apples. The higher abv strength makes it just so much better.
